My DB qualified as a doctor in the mid 1960s and emigrated to Canada. He spent a year working in a Toronto hospital researching the aftercare for hip replacement patients. His recommendation was to get the patient out of bed within 24 hours of the operation. I always think of him when I hear of a hip replacement operation.

I wish him a speedy recovery. He's a tough old bird isn't he. Since I watched him portrayed by Mat Smith in the Croin, I've warmed to him.

I also wish him a speedy recovery. DH was in agony when his hip went, I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. (He waited only a few weeks from the decision to replace to actual replacement. On the NHS, wonderful job).

My neice’s husband was on the NHS list for only a very short time, and had his second hip surgery carried out in a private hospital used by the NHS trust. I’m sure HRH is in similarly good hands! I wish him well.

He did have a general anaesthetic, apparently. When he was filmed walking to church at Christmas he looked absolutely fine. He must be very fit in general. The Queen Mother had a hip replacement when she was 95.

My DBIL wasn’t on the list long at all for his second replacement on the same side. In fact he kept trying to put it off and was warned by his doctor of the dire consequences he could face if it wasn’t done quickly.

Maybe he had it done on the nhs. He was probably 72 when he went on the list!

I doubt if he had an general at his age my aunt had it under an epidural in her 80 s

Good on him that’s some serious surgery at 96 .

Having had a new hip on the nhs , I do not grudge him his and hope he gets as much relief as I did . Maybe he has private insurance

It's major surgery. I wish he hadn't waited so long to get it done. Hope he makes a good recovery .

Not very long I expect.
But if I had the means and required a new hip or a new anything for that matter,
I wouldn't hesitate to get it fixed.

There wouldn't be much point clogging up the NHS waiting list.
