I think it's just Augusta National golf club's terminology. They call the spectators and golf game "patrons". I expect they think that it singles them out and makes them exclusive. I love the Masters golf, I'm a huge fan and would love to go one day, but I don't suppose I'll ever get there.
My DH is watching the build up to the US Golf Masters and I noticed that no one is allowed to call the general public 'supporters' they are only to be called 'Patrons'. Is it only me that thinks this is so silly. I wonder what the purpose of this is.
