We were talking about wedding rings the other day, and whether or not we take them off. Mine was off when I was pregnant, as my fingers were swollen, but, apart from then, I wear it all the time. A couple of my friends don’t wear one at all, and others only wear one occasionally. We also have a friend who swaps hers for a new one when she gets tired of her existing one.
What about you?

After he died I had the wedding ring my 1st husband gave me and my mothers wedding ring made into 1 ring which I wear on my right hand! The ring my DH gave me on our marriage never comes off! My 1st engagement ring I gave to my daughter .

Not meaning to be rude, but what's the point of having a ring if you don't wear it (unless, of course, you're divorced or a widow)?

Anniebach Mon 26-Mar-18 13:37:12

I stopped wearing mine a year after my husband died, I lost weight and it kept slipping off. He had it made for me from Welsh gold because I wouldn't wear gold for fear it came from S.A. So it couldn't be replaced.

DH has a ring. He didn’t want a plain band so he had a signet type ring instead.

I wear my wedding and engagement rings all the time and have had to have the setting on my engagement ring built up as it was getting precariously thin.

Do your husbands wear rings?

Dh does. Maybe he shouldn't as he got amalgam on it and had to have it polished off!

My ring cost £9 and his matching one cost £16.

I still wear my original plain gold band. I think I would find it difficult to take off after 53 years. I lost my engagement ring many years ago but I am always looking for a similar one.

Auntieflo Mon 26-Mar-18 13:05:52

A bit like Greyduster, but I did actually lose my first 22ct, wedding ring whilst shaking out straw for the rabbits hutch. So we went along to the jewellers, children in tow, and bought a replacement, 9ct. one. This eventually got too tight, and I had it cut off. Some time ago I took several pieces of old gold to a jewellers and sold the lot for what I thought was a lot of money. These days I wear my mother's eternity ring as a wedding ring, but now I really prefer silver. My engagement ring rarely gets an outing, but will go to our daughter in due course.

I had mine cut off after catching in on a nail in a bannister that damaged the ring and my finger,my knuckle has never gone back to the same size ,so I have one we bought then about 5 years ago though the original is in my jewellery box.It had worn quite thin which could have been why it buckled so badly when it caught .Always wear, it always did .

Mines a wide 22ct band, also 70s era. I do take it off occasionally as I developed ‘wedding ring’ eczema.
It starts with the itching others describe and took months to go. I had to have my wedding ring, eternity ring and engagement ring sterilised.
Not wearing the wide ring all the time helps avoid reoccurrence.

I didn’t take mine off for about 35 years, then I had a problem with my hand and it became very swollen one nigh. DH had to cut it off with a hacksaw ! I had it made larger along with my engagement ring. Now they are both looser as I have lost weight. These days I always take mine off at night and occasionally forget to wear it. Rings are about the only jewellery that I wear so I feel ‘naked ‘ if I forget .

I haven't worn my wedding ring in years either - I've had it 47 years and may occasionally put it on if I'm going out to a special occasion with the eternity ring husband bought me one Christmas but like others it makes my finger itchy and sore. I don't wear any rings normally. I still have the engagement ring he gave me when we were 15 but it's lost a stone and the band is very thin - I doubt it would fit my fat fingers now sad

Grannybags Mon 26-Mar-18 12:35:07

Mine is a silver band made in Carnaby Street and cost £8! Has never been off my finger in 45 years. It's still wearing well but much thinner than it was in 1972!

Bathsheba Mon 26-Mar-18 12:05:34

I haven't worn mine for about 25 years, for the same reason as Lucky, because it's a wide 70s style band and makes my finger itch like crazy underneath it. I never had a replacement and now I can't imagine wearing one at all - it would probably feel very odd to me, as I don't wear rings at all so I'm used to my hands being free of clutter!

Cherrytree59 Mon 26-Mar-18 12:02:04

Mine has stayed on for 37 years it is now smooth from constant wear, it initially had a diamond shape pattern on the outer surface.

I also wear my engagement and eternity ring only remove for jobs such as gardening etc.

janeainsworth Mon 26-Mar-18 11:58:33

I didn’t have an engagement ring which has been a good excuse to drop hints on other occasions, like 30th and 40th wedding anniversaries.
I was never going to take my ring off but had to comply with the ‘no rings rule’ when I worked in Manchester Dental Hospital.

I had to have my ring, which cost £6 in 1970, made larger when it was threatening to cut off the blood supply to my finger, and that cost £70 shock
The jewellery cut it off and as he picked up his drill thingy, his colleague said ‘he’s not done this before but don’t worry you’ll be alright’shockshockgrin

I have my almost 40 year old one which is plain gold hearts in a circle - very pretty. I did have to have a piece put in due to arthritic knuckles. I take it off for sports and gardening and at night - cant stand to wear jewellery in bed.

Grandma70s Mon 26-Mar-18 11:40:38

My husband died many years ago and I wouldn’t dream of removing my wedding ring.

Gagagran Mon 26-Mar-18 11:28:53

I have an 18ct 5-diamond engagement ring and a 22ct 4mm wide wedding ring and I wear both every day. Only take them off to put hand cream on at bedtime. I love both my rings which we chose together in 1964 when we got engaged and 1965 when we got married.

I also have a Russian wedding ring which I got in 1988 after a hiatus in our marriage and a 3-stone ruby and diamond eternity ring which I had for our Ruby Wedding in 2005.

We had a new TV for our Golden Wedding in 2015! grin

Witzend Mon 26-Mar-18 11:27:31

PS - I've never heard of widows removing rings, either. My mother wore hers for at least 20 years after my father died - at least until her dementia advanced and the ring went missing - doubtless hidden away somewhere weird, like so many other things - and was probably inadvertently thrown out.

nanasam Mon 26-Mar-18 11:25:05

I refused to take mine off, then found I couldn't! My fingers swelled (along with my body) and I eventually had to have it cut off whilst on holiday in Spain. I now wear DH's grandmother's rose gold ring on my wedding finger and DH's wedding ring on my right hand. The original ring sat in my drawer in 3 pieces for years and had no sentimental value any more so I went to one of these gold fairs and sold it, along with a whole load of broken jewellery. It was 22Ct, so made a fair bit of money grin

Witzend Mon 26-Mar-18 11:24:45

I've hardly ever taken mine off. Only time I can remember is when it was getting a bit tight - I can't bear not being able to get rings off - and it had to be made bigger. But the jeweller did it so quickly - a heat-applying thing so it could be expanded - even that didn't last long.

ninathenana Mon 26-Mar-18 11:15:44

I had to replace my original ring as it no longer fitted. I'd worn that one 24/7 for 25 yrs. I got a replacement for our silver anniversary and have worn this one 24/7 for the past 18 yrs.
My friend has had about 5 different ones the last one she had for Christmas '16. She wears each of them as the mood takes her.

Tweedle24 Mon 26-Mar-18 11:14:20

I wear mine and a gypsy ring given to me by my husband for my 60th birthday (I did not have an engagement ring). Since I have been widowed, I have heard others say that the rings should be taken off when the husband dies. I had not heard that before and, certainly, none of my close family or friends have removed their rings when widowed,

Greyduster Mon 26-Mar-18 11:13:25

Having said all that, And I had forgotten until a few minutes ago, I didn’t actually get married with my ring. It is a long story but it was left in a kitchen cupboard due to a last minute change of best man, and we had all the usual “have you got the ring, Ha ha ha” but no-one was laughing. The only lady in our small party who could get her ring off was my mother in law, so I got married with her ring! I don’t know how we have survived to fifty one years after the fiasco that was our wedding day!

Dontaskme Mon 26-Mar-18 11:09:46

Have to admit I don't even know where mine is. I do sometimes wear an eternity ring DH gave me after we'd been married for about 20 years and also the "engagement" ring I bought for myself after we'd been married for about 10 - the original was more or less from a cracker, all we could afford at the time. My mum wore her wedding ring the whole time after they got married, even after my dad died 30 odd years before her. TBH I only recently found out the significance of the ring - something to do with a circle being love never ending???? I seem to have forgotten already! Ah well, mine was ugly and looked like a washer anyway smile
