Your wedding ring

We were talking about wedding rings the other day, and whether or not we take them off. Mine was off when I was pregnant, as my fingers were swollen, but, apart from then, I wear it all the time. A couple of my friends don’t wear one at all, and others only wear one occasionally. We also have a friend who swaps hers for a new one when she gets tired of her existing one.
What about you?

I wear my wedding ring everyday but take it off to put on my engagement ring first which I like to do sometimes rather than put the engagement ring after. Mind you I can only remove it when my fingers are cool! DH has given me a couple of rings which I also wear from time to time as my engagement ring is now very thin though I love it. DH doesn't wear a ring and neither did my father. I used to wear my grandad's signet ring a lot but it's a bit tight these days!

I've never had mine off in nearly 50yrs until recently when I had to have steriod injections in my left hand. After the agony of removing it the first time I had it re-sized but unfortunately when the time came to have the next injection my fingers had become more mishapen so I decided to buy another ring a larger size which is secured by my engagement ring which I can still get on and off. My husband then put my wedding ring on my right hand which is the way it is done in Spain and I wear my Mum's engagement ring on the same finger. I actually like this better than the original way!!

I’ve worn mine since I got married 47 years ago, I’ve never taken it off

My friend died last year. Her husband wears his and her wedding rings on a gold chain around his neck.

Day6 I think that too - my mum was (supposedly) buried wearing her diamond engagement and wedding rings (I was not party to that decision). I would rather one of us (her daughters or granddaughters) had kept them. It makes me feel sad.

Never worn it since my H asked me to hand it to him during our wedding meal and promptly passed it on to my MIL who wore it the rest of the day.

Never really recovered my interest in it after that.

I rarely take of my wedding ring, only if it gets itchy due to irritation and then only for a short time. After 50+ years I can still get it off easily. It is made from 22 ct gold with white gold in the centre with a cross pattern. The yellow gold did have a pattern each side, like the side of a three penny piece but that has worn off.

I was surprised people had new rings just for a change. For me this was the ring I was married with and would not change it unless I had to. Never heard of taking your ring off when your husband dies as this would be a memory of him.

Engagement ring I have had a replacement as my husband wanted me buy me a new one.

Mine is part of a set of three which became popular in the 70s, a wedding ring/eternity ring and engagement ring they replaced my original plain gold band which I lost when on holiday I only wear them as a set when going somewhere special as they fill the bottom half of my ring finger and can be uncomfortable but I love them.

Never take my wedding ring , neither did DH. Although when we were first married I got terrible itchy eczema underneath it and had to take it off for a few days till it had cleared up.

My first wedding ring was so pretty, 18 carat gold with three tiny, inlaid diamonds. After 20 or so years two of the diamonds fell out so it was replaced with a Russian wedding ring of three different types of gold. At some point this ring went missing, much to my dismay because I do take my rings off at night and if I'm doing a mucky job. Last year, having moved house, I was clearing the garage of unwanted furniture including an old linen basket/container which had an internal cloth insert. I detached the latter because it was on its way to the recycling centre. At the bottom of the container was my ring, jammed in a couple of slats. I was so pleased to recover it and now rarely take it off, it feels very special. I never had an engagement ring, I'd love an eternity ring but haven't managed to engineer my way to one yet! My mother wore her wedding ring all her life and widowhood and asked to be buried with it.

I have worn my mothers wedding rings since she died in 2003. They fit me perfectly and I was the lucky one she wanted to have them. She had her band on the day she died and the nurse was kind enough to get it off after we left the hospital. I was able to have it on my finger the same day. I remember as a small child admiring her emeral cut ring and asking her if I could have it someday. They mean the world
to me. My husband doesn’t mind I don’t wear the one I was married with.

I am so sad that I can no longer wear any of my lovely rings on my arthritic fingers and it does feel very strange after more than 50 years. I am thinking of having them altered but am not sure if it is worth doing as my fingers may well change even more dramatically.
I had my favourite aunt's wedding ring restyled into a lovely dress ring with our birth stone added and it was much admired. It went missing from my kitchen last year while we had visitors from DH's family and in spite of making delicate opportunities for it to 'anonymously reappear' it never has. sad

My wedding ring is a plain 18ct gold band that cost £4.50 in 1963. Apart from going to be enlarged about 9 or 10 years ago, it hasn`t been off my finger for nearly 55 years. After 23 years of marriage my husband bought me a half eternity ring, which split at the back about 2 weeks before he died, he told me to get it repaired, which I did, got it back just before he died. It`s just split again, my daughters said not to bother, but I know that my husband would want me to have it mended, so it`s at the jewellers again. He never had a wedding ring, partly because it would have been dangerous in his job, and also because he thought that men who wore jewellery were "cissies"!

I always wear my engagement ring and wedding ring, have only taken them off when fingers swelled in pregnancy. On my right hand I have my great grandmother’s wedding ring which my grandmother gave to my mother because DM was pregnant with me and her thin wartime wedding ring had snapped. It may sound a bit twee, but I feel I am maintaining a connection with three strong women!

MissAdventure Mon 26-Mar-18 22:09:42

I don't think that would have happened. I used to work for an undertaker, (looking after his wife, who was still alive!) and he told me that peoples belongings are kept with them.

I took mine off once I started divorce proceedings against my husband, many years ago. It broke my heart doing that and I cried and cried that I had to do it. I married for life but sometimes it just doesn't go as planned.

I came back from the solicitors and threw it down the loo. It wouldn't flish away - it sat on the bottom of the pan. I retrieved it and it's now wrapped in tissue in a bedside drawer. I ought to give it to the children to sell really. It's a wide seventies band and cost a lot at the time, so I imagine it's value has increased.

My Mum never took her wedding ring off, ever. When she died she was buried with it on her finger. I was rather upset when a friend scoffed and said "Oh that would have been removed in the funeral parlour before the coffin lid was screwed on." Must admit, no one has any way of knowing. I have been thinking about that ever since.

Sorry to change the thread direction with an unhappy tale.

That's lovely JaneD

Never take my wedding ring off. No, not quite true as I parted with it for 48 hours to have the 22ct gold re-polished when our second son got married. Other than that it has never left me for 49 years. I do have two engagement rings, my original and a very different style Mr C bought me for our 40th anniversary. I wear both according to what I’m wearing. I treasure my Mum’s wedding and engagement rings, they are always worn on my right hand at family celebrations, my way of including her. maw, I’m right handed but the fingers of my left hand are bigger than those on my right. It’s always puzzled me.

A burglar stole my beautiful, unusual engagement ring three years after we were married. I bought a washing machine with the insurance money. After twenty years my finger grew too large for my wedding ring, which couldn't be enlarged as it had a leaf pattern on it. DH bought me a new one but the following summer that was too tight so I had it enlarged. Come the autumn my finger had shrunk, the ring slipped off and was lost. I now wear a silver band and a dress ring.

I love my wedding ring. It’s a plain gold band and was cheap as chips, but I remember picking it out, I remember it being blessed during our wedding ceremony. To me it’s a symbol of all we promised each other 48 years ago. I wear it with pride.
I’m lucky that I’ve had no medical or sad reason to stop wearing it.

MawBroon Mon 26-Mar-18 21:12:58

That’s a lovely memento of her Jane!

PamelaJ1 Mon 26-Mar-18 21:08:19

Take mine off all the time for work. I lost both wedding and engagement rings once. I think I threw them away by mistake.
Didn’t much like them, my DH bought me replacements that are much nicer.
It’s only a bit of metal you know, no soul! Still have the husband, that’s more important.

JaneD3 Mon 26-Mar-18 20:34:30

I used my grandmother’s rose gold 22ct wedding ring and I have had it sized up and down several times - I still love it. My mum’s wedding ring wore very thin, so she had it recast, along with her mother’s wedding ring. She died a few days ago and my daughter will have it remodelled for her wedding in August. Lots of history! My ring was on Nan’s finger for over 50 years and has been on mine for very nearly 40.

Alygran Mon 26-Mar-18 20:14:46

Mine is in my jewellery box as I can’t get it on due to a damaged and arthritic ring finger. I wear a half hoop eternity ring and diamond solitaire on my right hand. These are replacements for originals stolen in a burglary 5 years ago. DH’s ring in in my box too. Not sure I can get it on but I would like to wear it.

Kittye Mon 26-Mar-18 20:12:14

I'm afraid I'm on my third wedding ring I can't get my first one over my knuckle it's an ornate patterned one so couldn't have it enlarged. I can wear my second one n cold weather but not in hot weather so I'm wearing my third one now it slips a bit at the moment but in summer fits perfectly. I had my engagement ring enlarged but only wear it for special occasions. I know a few people who don't bother wearing one but my hand feels bare without one.
