The return of Fanny Cradock

Teetime my DH says your joke is even funnier that Johnnie’s faux pas.

Gillybob Johnnie didn’t realise what he had said.

There is lots of clips and full shows on you tube. They're strangely hypnotic.
I've watched them in the past, never thought a rerun would be on the cards.

She really came across as a snob of the first order and poor Johnny, but I expect he played up to it.
Just about 50 years ago, I remember because of the house we lived in, I tried one of her recipes and something went wrong.
I wrote to her explaining my problem, I received a reply putting me right and enclosed was a booklet of her recipes, so at least she had polite staff, willing to do the right thing.

DH is often Johnny to my Fanny.

She came across as a bullying and patronising woman but her recipes were good. I remember that there was a period when sugar became almost unobtainable, and she invented a dinner party dessert using melted Mars bars to provide the sweetness, combining them with whipped cream and egg whites. It was absolutely delicious! I think there was probably some brandy included as well. There was also a recipe for making a sponge cake with the egg yolks left over when making meringues.

I used to have a Craddock cookery book ages ago, and my main impression was that she was the most fearful snob! I particularly remember her being very rude about Brit-style 'lethal old' chips - only French fries were acceptable.
Funny that she called them lethal, when the ratio of potato to oil is much greater in big fat 'proper' chips.

Have to say though that since I am sick to death of cookery programmes, I wouldn't watch it anyway.

I’ve heard of them but can’t remember ever seeing them on TV . Did he really make that “Fanny donut “ comment ? Was it a comedy ?

I use a Fanny craddock recipe for Christmas pudding. I hadn't thought of doing one when we first had Christmas for our parents in our new home. Fanny Craddock did a recipe for one called 4 Day Christmas Pudding (or something like that!)

I made it, it was delicious and I made it every year until I became GF!

I watched a clip of her recently on something or other and remember thinking that, when someone once asked me what my worst nightmare would be and I said being stuck on a desert island with Fanny Craddock and expected to do your share of the cooking!! Like everyone else, I felt sorry for poor old Johnnie and the young helpers she was always bossing about!

She was a monster. Her very public downfall was a joy to behold.

Having said that, I will probably watch the re-runs
