When did you first realise you were an adult?

Another topic from local radio.

E.g. shaving your legs with those tiny razors
E.g. writing your first cheque

For me it was starting Secretarial College. I felt very grown up.

Being left in charge of a ward full of patients aged only 19 suddenly made me realise I was supposed to be an adult.
I didn’t like it, tho!

sluttygran Tue 20-Mar-18 09:48:25

It was me that was 19 - not all the patients! grin

I'm still waiting! I think we all carry so much baggage from our childhoods that never really resolves and I will consider myself an adult when that happens - I'm not holding my breath! smile

When my parents died. They always treated me as if I was 8; 12 on a really good day... [BTW I was in my 60s when my mama died... confused]

When I was allowed to stay at home on my own (aged 15) when the rest of the family went away for a weekend and I didn't want to go.

I was eighteen. There was a knock on the door and I answered it. On the doorstep was a young man canvassing for the general election. He asked me if I was going to vote, and tried to convince me that the Labour party were the ones to support. After he'd gone I realised that he hadn't asked to speak to a parent, that's when I felt grown up.

Commuting to London on the train aged 15 to start my first job as a Window Dresser with my friend who was on her way to her job in Kings Road, also 15. We thought we were so grown up!

When I was at college and met my first serious boyfriend at almost 20. I knew I was grown up, but at the time I wasn't yet of age and my parents and the College Principal tried to stop me seeing him.

Pretty recently actually... I'm 77 ...
after the funeral of my last remaining aunt it became obvious all my (younger) cousins now regarded me as their go-to relative ...i was astonished ... I'd taken over from auntie... glad to be in a position that they thought of me as their "port in a storm" ...
so i'm now a genuine grown up ...

When I passed my driving test very soon after my 17th birthday. There was no money for lessons so Dad had taught me on an old airfield. I was brilliant at manoeuvring and had about three weeks experience of actual roads.

I find this a difficult one as parent divorced and often left to look after 3 younger brothers cook clean etc the youngest just a baby, but I think it really hit me I was an adult when got married and had my own daughter, husnabd aften away for work months at a time and juggling housework night feeds money and often seeing no one for days at a time.

When I was about 26 and both my parents died of cancer in rapid succession (within a couple of months) and I had to do all the organising for both funerals, get all the necessary documents together to apply for probate, sell the house and buy another.

Dad - being an accountant - had taken care of all the domestic paperwork, bills and anything remotely to do with legal bits and bobs up until then.

It was an extremely steep learning curve!
