Mary Berry - irritating?

Does anyone else find her patronising and irritatingly self congratulatory? Or is it just me?

luzdoh Wed 21-Mar-18 14:17:14

kittylester I was neutral until suddenly one morning years ago, I was watching daytime TV which I didn't generally do, she came on and started going on about women getting their houses clean and tidy, and suddenly she looked straight at the camera - at me! - and said "Have you made the beds yet?"

That stayed with me. Patronising, judgemental, old woman! Made the beds? What's "making the beds" got to do with pulling up a duvet? And what business is it of hers?

I’m glad that you’re not upset then gilly and of course, I wouldn’t report you.

Yes, before you say it I was going to make some biscuits but Mr OM has just brought me a cup of tea, so I’ll wander off when I’m finished that....with your permission of course!

gillybob Wed 21-Mar-18 14:08:32

I think if you read what I said properly you will find I have not said you shouldn't continue on this thread... I said "if it upsets you so much (as it clearly does) then you really didn't have to join in......"

But if you want to report me, go right ahead. I really don't care.

Seeing people or animals hurt makes me upset.
Hearing bad news makes me upset.
Hearing that someone I love is poorly makes me upset.
Watching the news often makes me upset.

Reading your posts makes me laugh out loud! So please don't flatter yourself.

OldMeg Wed 21-Mar-18 14:00:22

No I’m not upset by it. Upset isn’t the emotion I’m experiencing at all.

But are you saying I shouldn’t continue on this thread? Isn’t that against GN guidelines. However I can tell you’re upset. So I’ll take a little break and bake some biscuits for tomorrow.

Incidentally I’ll use a Rachel Allan recipe if that is OK with you?

gillybob Wed 21-Mar-18 13:57:05

Lucky you kitty I bet you're relieved.

Carry on "getting at " me OldMeg I really don't give a Monkeys toot !

OldMeg Wed 21-Mar-18 13:56:10

The odd thing is, I rarely watch MB, or Nigella, or Ant & Dec. Nor and I especially interested in the Royals.

gillybob Wed 21-Mar-18 13:55:25

Oh again you disappoint me OldMeg . I really thought it was "all about me" and "my moral high ground" Hmmmph.

"Digging myself in deeper" what the bloomin' heck are you on about woman?

oh and guess what............YOU REALLY DIDN'T HAVE TO JOIN IN ANY PART OF THIS THREAD IF YOU ARE SO UPSET ABOUT IT !

Mary Poppins syndrome or what?

OldMeg Wed 21-Mar-18 13:49:30

No kitty I’m not looking for a quarrel at all, especially not with you. But as I said to gilly earlier, it’s not about her.

Had anyone posted those unkind comments then I would come back at them. Just because gilly keeps on, and on, digging herself in deeper, then of course it’s going to make her feel she’s being ‘got at’.

It’s not her. It’s the unkind comments, which many others have mentioned too. It’s not just me who is, frankly, sad at the level of nastiness being dished up.

My point from the beginning has been that MB has done no one any harm, so why pick on her when she can’t defend herself?

Had it been the person I profiled above, then he certainly has done harm to a lot of people and then, I could accept him being pilloried.

gillybob Wed 21-Mar-18 13:44:14

I've got a lot more to worry about than what OldMeg thinks about me, kitty but thank you anyway. smile

I'm still interested to hear who this person is though?

I asked her yesterday what she meant by saying "I took the moral high ground" (or whatever her exact words were) , didn't get an answer from that either.

kittylester Wed 21-Mar-18 13:37:57

gilly, you are, unfairly, getting the flack. Oldmeg has been looking for a quarrel since she warned me that I had 'opened a can of worms.

Apparently, we are not allowed to pass comments without being castigated by the thought police.

gillybob Wed 21-Mar-18 13:31:17

Oh come on... I give up, you're just gonna have to tell us OldMeg

gillybob Wed 21-Mar-18 13:28:46

hmm

Now let me think....... cogs whirring.....

Nearly there....

OldMeg Wed 21-Mar-18 12:52:04

Rather than berate celebrity individuals there are traits I might fnd difficult to excuse in people in general.

These include:
crass stupidity
prejudice
puerility
narcissism

Now if just one individual exhibited all these traits, can you imagine who I mean?

gillybob Wed 21-Mar-18 10:37:52

So it seems MissA

MissAdventure Wed 21-Mar-18 10:30:34

Ah, so we're allowed opinions, just not on Mary Berry? smile

gillybob Wed 21-Mar-18 10:16:00

So do you want a full list of all the TV personalities that irritate me/us Eskay10 and "deserve a truth session" would that make it fairer?

I'll start with :

Ant McPartlin
Chris Evans
Russell Brand
Chris Evans
Davina McCall
Carol Vorderman
Richard Hammond
That Dimbleby bloke from Question time.
Oh and Chris Evans.

I know there's more! wink

Eskay10 Wed 21-Mar-18 10:05:56

I think it is a unfair to criticise MB alone in this way. There are very many personalities out there who deserve a truth session but are we so perfect ourselves. Give her a break and sort yourselves out.

gillybob Wed 21-Mar-18 09:54:32

Why should we applaud someone for being on TV at 82, if we don't like her? Since when was age a qualification for liking or disliking someones style of presentation? So she's on TV almost every day, she's 82, good for her but I don't have to like her or her programs.

Exactly MawBroon I always thought that GN was like having a cuppa and a chat with a group of other people, some friends, some not so much. I never thought it was a platform where we all had to be sickly sweet and nice, all agree with each other and never, ever talk about anyone on TV in a less than sparkly light. Whats the point of that? how bloomin' boring would that be?

merlotgran Wed 21-Mar-18 09:52:54

Nigella's trollopy (is that a word?) performance is a very well honed act. She admits that she's not a trained cook but a food writer who loves to cook because she loves food.

I saw her at a book signing a few months ago and she spoke very movingly about the deaths of her mother and sister - she didn't mention John Diamond. She has many, many fans and she knows full well that they know she's 'hamming it up' for the camera.

Nigella the trollop is a very attractive woman who uses her sex appeal as a career advantage just as Mary Berry uses her homely, wise and grandmotherly qualities.

Hairy Biker, Jamie, James Martin et al.... If they were all the same we wouldn't watch them.

Anannymous Wed 21-Mar-18 09:36:47

Shouldn’t we be applauding the fact that an 82 year old lady has such a high profile job in television. Does it matter whether she is thin, fat or whatever. For what it’s worth I enjoy her programmes and use her recipes often, usually successfully. (I also hope that as a gran she is not a member of Gransnet).

MawBroon Wed 21-Mar-18 09:28:54

I may or may not agree with the comments made in general on GN about TV presenters/chefs/cooks/Royals whoever, but they are after all only opinions, the sort of thing you might share over a cup of coffee with a friend and all are free to agree or disagree.
I know GN is not confidential and can be quoted in the media or on the likes of Facebook, so comments must not be libellous, BUT I doubt very much if the objects of our criticism or praise read them and, or, frankly care.
We shouldn’t be unkind but shouldn’t be too vanilla either!

Anniebach Wed 21-Mar-18 09:22:01

Can I be an envious person and not know it? Mary Berry irritates me, as does Nigella, I remember Anthea Turner having a tv programme on having a perfect house, she even polished nuts !

gillybob Wed 21-Mar-18 09:00:19

My 12 year old DGD announced on Friday night that she “could do makeup “ she said “grandma , I’ve got a pallette, I could make you actually pretty “ ..... “well I mean a little bit pretty” grin

On Saturday night when she had gone home I found a download on my phone “make up tips for old ladies” . I’m 56 !

gillybob Wed 21-Mar-18 08:50:16

Oh yes Nelliemoser my late grandma had a wicked sense of humour . At 99 she asked my granddaughters ( her great great granddaughters) to do her nails and they painted them bright pink . They put a feather boa around her neck and painted her tiny lips too . My cousin said she looked like an old tart ( she did) . We all laughed . The same lady thought nothing of telling me I was getting fat and looked hideous in a particular dress, I loved. If you can’t laugh at yourself ......

Nelliemoser Wed 21-Mar-18 08:44:40

I tried to post earlier but The flipping tablet lost what I has written.
These spiteful comments about Mary Berry are completely unfair. oif us under 50 with very different ideas and aspirations.

She was not an academic high flyer at school compared with her siblings, and somehow started in domestic science and she has made a very good career of this.

How many of us could make such well baked perfect looking products that look as good as hers.

Why is she being slagged like this on here with all this unwarranted spite. She is not a spiteful woman. Not full of her own importance but a woman who has made good living from something she enjoys.

Would you make such comments to your grandmothers?
