Mary Berry - irritating?

kittylester I was neutral until suddenly one morning years ago, I was watching daytime TV which I didn't generally do, she came on and started going on about women getting their houses clean and tidy, and suddenly she looked straight at the camera - at me! - and said "Have you made the beds yet?"

That stayed with me. Patronising, judgemental, old woman! Made the beds? What's "making the beds" got to do with pulling up a duvet? And what business is it of hers?

Oh dear I hope you've got a hard hat at the ready luzdoh certain people get very cross if you dare criticise Saint Mary of Berry .

Well I'm up to my 5th cup of tea already today Bridgeit and could easily put my head on the desk, no one would be any the wiser. No cake though (sadly) MB or anyone else's. Still it's home time in .....an hour and a half..... oh god.... that long? [big sigh]

I'm trying to follow the laugh or you might cry mantra today.

Not irritating at all and her recipes are easy, tasty and failsafe. Hope I look as good when I'm 82.

I shall have to refer to St. Mary of Berry the next time I visit DD2 and her clan.

She is a very good baker but when she tried to do MB's version of tarte-tatin the caramel ran all over the place.
A furious DD yelled, 'Oh f**k off Mary Berry*, I'm never doing your recipes again.'

There was a sharp intake of breath from her DH who replied, 'You can't say that. She's Mary Berry. Oh Emm Geeeee.'

My daughter was a fan of Mary Berry.
She was quite put out when Prue took over on 'bake off'.

My word, this thread has come on in leaps and bounds whilst I've been away busy (not baking).

Can I just whisper very quietly that actually I like Mary Berry, I don't think she's snobby, she is a product of her middle class and spent a long time in hospital when she was a child. She was told she wouldn't be good at anything much by a teacher - and has proved that teacher wrong. I think she has a sense of humour - perhaps some people just don't get her SOH.

I'm not keen on her nails (not suitable for doing cooking) but I wonder if she has terrible nails like me and has gel ones because her own are so awful on camera.

I don’t like watching any chef/cook banging on about recipes, but I quite enjoyed (some) bake off, it wasn’t about the food though, I just liked the format, like the great sewing bee and the pottery throw down programmes.
The interaction between the people taking part, and what the finished object looks like.
Mary Berry does have very long nails which are a bit shuddery when they dig into food items.I imagine she was very attractive when younger.

Has anyone read her autobiography, 'Recipe for Life?' I was lucky enough to win it in a Gnet competition.

It's very interesting and is a good account of how hard she worked but Oh dear.....her parenting skills were a bit shambolic. Most of the time her children were out of control and expulsion from school was a regular event

Sadly she lost one of her sons but I bet the other two have done just fine.

It's not always the swots who do well, sometimes it is the ones with a bit of spirit.

I have just read in the paper that BBC are going to show one of Fanny Cradocks old shows.
The programmes, which will be on BBC iPlayer from March 31, also include the 1978 Delia Smith's Cookery Course.
They will also be showing Ken Hom and Madhur Jaffrey.

We need the galloping gourmet!
