Hair salon disaster!

I've just come back from the hairdressers quite upset, partly because the young woman got rather sassy because I didn't understand what 'tin foil, half head' meant and partly because I look stupid - grey hair with red stripes like a human zebra!
I bought some Head and Shoulders which is, I know, a clarifying shampoo and I washed my hair four times so it looks a little better but not much. Any suggestions anyone? Can I put some colour over the top myself from a bought pack? I'm really upset and about to cut it all off with the kitchen scissors!

I have full head foil, just highlights. My hairdresser mixes up 3 colours, light brown, and 2 shades of blonde. That mixed with my own grey and brown just make it all blend in somehow. She is very experienced and makes a good job. You do need to go back and get it sorted. Don't cut it yourself. It can be easily put right by an experienced hairdresser, although it would cost ££. Which is of course why they need to sort it. They should never have left you looking like that.

I wish I could cut it myself, not just colour.
Fed up with the prices hairdressers charge, can anyone recommend a DIY cut it yourself book & do any grans netters cut their own hair & colour.

Funnygran Sat 17-Mar-18 11:18:05

I hate going to the hairdresser but since I can’t cut it myself I have to endure it. I went to the same place for years but it changed hands and the young man who took over made a mess of my hair and I looked like a zebra after he had done highlights! So I have been trying a few different ones and fingers crossed think I have found a decent one. DH can’t understand the fuss, he goes to the same barber every month and pays £8 for a haircut, ears trimmed and a discussion about football thrown in!

midgey
What a nightmare, I hate hairdressers they have such power over us!

No they don't. We're the ones with the cash! You tell them what you want and if they don't do it you ask for it to be remedied.

MawBroon Sat 17-Mar-18 11:05:14

saggi
You walk away. It’s that easy.

BlueBelle Sat 17-Mar-18 11:02:09

I would not go down the fb shaming idea I think that’s a really poor idea you are doing the right thing by speaking to them personally and with a back up crew far more adult and dignified
Do let us know how it goes

TerriBull Sat 17-Mar-18 11:01:12

Saggi what nonsense "all grey hair must be coloured blonde", my base colour on my grey roots is mid brown, which was my original tone and I have caramel highlights to break up what would be a block effect. I agree that if you go too dark it can look ageing, but for heavens sake there are lighter shades of brown. I'd change hairdressers, as you say, he's set in his ways.

Oopsadaisy12 Sat 17-Mar-18 10:55:28

Sadly, yes, drop him.
You are the customer, bad hair can ruin your self esteem. I’m 65 and have brunette, copper, small amount of blonde highlights and it makes me feel good. I went blonder and I looked awful.
Time to wave bye bye
You see what I did there?

TerriBull Sat 17-Mar-18 10:54:42

I'm wondering if you could had a base colour put on to hide the grey, I have this done in conjunction with highlights, whether that would blend in better with the existing ones you are not happy with until it all grows out. Perhaps you could ask the salon to do this free of charge considering the hash they have made.

Saggi Sat 17-Mar-18 10:52:08

I’m really beginning to resent my hairdresser....he’s getting on now ...like me...and whe I first went to him 20 years ago he really sorted my hair out. I was SO grateful to him I stuck with him! But now! I feel trapped. He’s not seeming to do anything I want. I’ve had the same colour for years , but last year I fancied it a bit darker ...that’s a no-no to him. All grey must be coloured blonde! I’ve aked and asked about going back to my brunette color but he just says it will be ‘ageing’...I’m 67 and don’t mind looking my age! He seems far too controlling but how do I just drop him after all these years! Also his prices are getting way over the top!

As someone else said, hairdressers have an awful lot of power over you. I had a particularly disastrous hair treatment a few years ago and when I phoned the salon to complain and see if it could be put right the manager was very insistent that i should go back to the same stylist which I didn't want. Eventually saw the manager who did make it look a lot better but I still think he only entertained me because I had my husband with me. Very difficult to be assertive when it's your looks that are involved but I hope all goes well for you.

TerriBull Sat 17-Mar-18 10:48:14

I know what tin foil half a head means because it's what I have done on my 3 times a year trip to when I go to the hairdressers. I'm surprised your stylist didn't run through a colour chart with you before she started and talk you through how the various shades can look, it's surprising that some manifest themselves darker or lighter than the samples shown and that needs pointing out. I'm sorry for your bad experience OP, it's quite crucial to know what the end effect will look like, it shouldn't be too much of a surprise quite honestly, I think I'd complain.

Marieeliz Sat 17-Mar-18 10:22:13

When my colour wasn't right. I told the Owner who cuts my hair and he said I should have rung him and he would have sorted it.

I went to have my foils done last week. The usual girl did it bug for some reason she asked if I wanted "it combing through to the roots" had no idea what she meant, I had never been asked this question before. Instead of highlights I have the copper colour all over. Not too keen but everyone says they like it. Why on earth she asked the question when I never have it done I don't know

I am lucky in my hair is still its original colour at 79 it is in the genes, my Mum still had auburn hair when she died at 98!

Ramblingrose22 Sat 17-Mar-18 10:21:44

Great idea, Blinko.

Azie09 - please tell us the name of the hairdresser who made such a hash of it, the name of the salon and where it is so that no-one else on Gransnet goes there and has the same experience.

Craicon Sat 17-Mar-18 10:21:34

Red highlights over grey hair isn’t a good look unless it’s very subtle. Sounds like your hairdresser is pretty clueless and dogmatic.
Don’t try to correct this yourself as you’ll end up with a murky mess and probably some damage.
A good hairdresser will be able to sort this out but you need to find one first. Have you any well groomed friends you can ask for recommendations?
I work from home and all my clients are word of mouth.

jocork Sat 17-Mar-18 10:18:34

Going public on twitter or facebook can be very effective as they won't want other customers put off.

Marieeliz Sat 17-Mar-18 10:18:29

As Oldmeg says I would definately ring the salon Manager and complain and get them to put it right.

Blinko Sat 17-Mar-18 09:56:31

Just a thought. Does your hairdresser have a facebook page? You could threaten to post a pic of your hair with red stripes.... Might get them to rectify pretty sharpish!

Rocknroll5me Sat 17-Mar-18 09:51:52

For the sake of those who don’t have a husband to take along I would just get a non permanent colour- there are some brilliant greys now silver blondes and graphites and do it yourself and never go back and tell as many people as you can preferably tweet complaints so that others don’t have to suffer.
After decades of colouring my hair myself I splashed out on a salon colour (over £100) at Sassoons the day before my only sons wedding. It was a disaster. A disgusting pinky beige. I had to quickly re-do it myself that night I was furious. I wouldn’t trust any of them the risk is too great and there are such f@bulous products out there now. Just go to a large Superdrug and make your choice for under a tenner. It’s really not hard and not at all risky.

Mary59nana Sat 17-Mar-18 09:43:00

I’m so glad your going back to the salon if only to get it done again with a more experienced stylist.
Secondly to make it known you are not happy with the attitude you received and maybe you are not the only one to be treated this way
The stylist sound to me to need more training on hair colouring and customer service

Good luck for today I hope you walk out of there with lovely new hair and confidence to say I did it

longpinknails Sat 17-Mar-18 09:39:03

Hi, washing your hair four times in Head and shoulders would have made the colour worse and patchy, so be prepared for her to argue further about what you’ve done to it since getting home.
I would approach it more from the fact that she should never have put red lowlights ( or stripes)in grey hair and you put your faith in her that she knew what she was doing.

Jane10 Sat 17-Mar-18 09:37:28

I'm glad you're going back. I bet the presence of DH will concentrate their minds. It's Saturday too so they'll be busy and will want to seem cooperative and helpful.
I have a half head with foils too. I have highlights and lowlights added. Last time a trainee did the foils but I wasn't happy with the big chunks she put it. The stylist fixed it immediately. I think she could see that it wasn't right.
I bet your hairdresser has many customers who are unhappy at her attitude. The manager might be interested to hear your complaint?
Good luck and tell us how you get on.

Aepgirl Sat 17-Mar-18 09:25:19

I really think you should go back to the hairdresser, perhaps your daughter could go with you, and stand your ground. It sounds that it was not done well and you shouldn't have to pay for it, or pay for it to be put right. Make sure other people avoid this salon too.

hildajenniJ Fri 16-Mar-18 20:38:30

Please go tomorrow, and let us know how you get on. I do hope it can be resolved to everyone's satisfaction.

cornergran Fri 16-Mar-18 18:29:10

Good luck azie, I had a colour disaster many years back and it floored me. I wonder, would it be easier if you pnoned in the morning to speak with the manager, explain and ask to see her/him in a quiet or if possible private space. Well done for keeping going with this, just keep reminding yourself none of this is your fault.
