Common words from your childhood,that woukd have to be explained to your Grandchild.

Barathea Blazers. My mother a complete snob, would not let us wear the wool blazer.

We were out allowed to carry umbrellas at our secondary school. “Gels will wear their hooded raincoat, which will provide adequate protection” said our Deputy Head. The story made the Daily Mirror.

I never had a word for this, but remember the elastic that went through your sleeves to hold your gloves on?

Oh my mum used to make garters to hold up our socks.
They'd cut your circulation off!

Yes garters FarNorth I remember getting my first pair of stockings, (no tights then) and my mother forgot to buy me a suspender belt so I had to use garters. The stockings went baggy round my knees.

A pokey hat - ice cream cornet
A slider - ice cream between two wafers

These might have been local to my part of Scotland.

We wore daps ( plimsolls) which were whitened with some stuff out of a bottle and then left to dry.

My Mum was once booking B&B for friends of hers. The owner asked if they would want nylon sheets or cotton ones, as she didn't know what age the guests were.
I still haven't worked out why their age would be connected to their wish (or not) for nylon sheets.

Garters to hold up your knee socks for school.

Does anyone remember Brentford Nylons. Those awful nylon sheets that went all bobbley and were uncomfortable to sleep in.

Taking all morning for shopping. In Caters Supermarket there were separate queues for everything. Then queuing at the butchers, bakers, greengrocer and chemist. Now it is 5minutes on the internet.

Soothing intervals instead of ads!
Remember the cat jumping around a chair?
And the potter using a wheel?

And no annoying ads breaking up what you were watching?
They must think our attention span is 15 minutes.

Nice Ads on the TV
Now it's all insurance, banks, cars and loans.

Or worse the ones where DH and I look at each other and ask what was that about?

Instead of lady floating in a balloon selling slimming bread or a lady wafting up the beach eating a flake.

Then there was the nice little jingles to sell beans or washing up liquid.

Looking back it somehow seemed all nice and cosy. must take off my rose tinted
glasses?

Or broken biscuits much cheaper!

Biscuits, displayed at the grocers shop, in a large square tin box with a glass lid and sold by the quarter pound (or half pound if you were very rich).

Littleflo, a sugar butty was a real treat!

Butter pats, cut from a big block by the grocer and shaped into a smaller block with ridged paddles that left a pattern on the surface.

Sugar on buttered bread. We always had a cooked tea each evening. I was very jealous of my friend who had bread and jam for tea and on Saturday had bread spread thickly with butter and then two huge tables spoons of sugar pressed into it.

Isn't this a great thread? It brings back so many memories.

Swilly tub - it hung on a nail outside the back door and was brought out every Satruday, and we took it in turns to be bathed. Same water, topped up as we went along.

It is a lovely word and we really should keep using it . I said on another thread that I hadn’t inherited anything in my life but I lied .... I inherited all my grandmas pinnies .

Right that's it. DGD and I are baking today and we will don our pinnies!

I became posh in that way too, Marydoll, but started using the word 'pinny' again when my grandchildren came along. It's a lovely word and I decided it should stay in our family vocabulary for a bit longer

You see I've become "posh" and only wear aprons now. My neighbours call me the "Apron Queen".
However, the pupils in my school didn't know what I was taking about when I used the word "pinny."
