Regret removing bath

My mum has one of the seats in Maryeliza's photo. It was supplied FOC by her local Occuptional Health department when she had a hip replacement op some years ago. She's since had a new knee too but her arthritis is progressing (she's now 90yo) so she still needs it.

The OH dept maintain it for her and she has a weekly cleaner who cleans it for her.

We had a replacement en suite installed last year in our house but we had a new bath with shower put in. I don't mind showers when on holiday etc but a bath before bedtime is what I like. After a few days of showers, I never feel properly clean. Also, after I broke my leg I am terrified of falling in the shower though strangely, getting in and out of the bath doesn't worry me.

We also got rid of our bidet at the same time. I regret that.

We haven't had a bath for 25 years, when we moved the old bathroom we changed to walk in shower as we never used the bath as a bath, and only used the over bath shower.
Don't like the idea of sitting in dirty water these days lol.

Maryeliza54, thank you, but before I saw your post, with picture, I was thinking of the sort that fixes to the far side of the bath, then has a sort of strap seat that stretches across the bath into another holder. Sorry, as I can'texplain clearly what I mean. But after seeing yours, it does look much easier.

I know the one you mean AuntieFlo - I would probably have had that if I didn’t have a good sized bath. I think you have to have that one permanently fixed don’t you? I bet there’s you tube video ( there is one for everything it seems)

When we moved last year we insisted on a wet-room rather than a bath as it is so easy to be in and out,saves so much on the water bill and has a great feel of space.
I would never go back to having a bath installed again far to difficult to reach down and clean at our age.

Oh dear Bath Knight went bust two years ago - there’s probably something else similar on the market.

Nobody uses the bath in our house but will keep it because it is best when it comes to sell. Large shower in en suite big enough for me and a carer if needed.

When I had the bathroom and toilet knocked into one room I had a large walk-in shower fitted plus a bath (for when I come to sell the house). I can't use the bath because of my MS and my GS only likes showers so the only one using it is my dog .

glammanana - are there any down sides to a wet room versus a walk-in shower ?
I am moving soon to a new home that has a small bathroom which only has a walk-in shower and wondered about making it a wet room really to make it seem bigger.
I would appreciate your (and anyone elses ) thoughts.

I've been swithering over this dilemma for years. The bathroom does need refurbishment and there is room for both bath and separate shower, but I'd love a big shower with room for a seat. I'm increasingly wary about climbing in and out of the bath to have a shower, so I really will have to bite that bullet sooner rather than later.

Dread not being able to use the bath. I love my morning soak with a book. I will have a seat/lift when the time comes. maryeliza, yours looks less bulky than some, will want something similar.

I would hate not having a bath. Lovely for a relaxing soak, especially after a few hours hard graft in the garden. Or to warm up on those occasions when you feel cold from inside and only a bath can warm you up. We have a shower over the bath, DH prefers that. I only use the shower for a hose down on a hot day. (Does anyone else feel freezing as soon as you open the shower curtain after a hot shower?). The last couple of times we moved house we immediately discounted houses with no bath although I agree that can be remedied. With regards wet rooms, isn’t slipping on the wet floor a possibility?

My sister in law tells me she once modelled for a bath seat advert. I haven't spotted her yet.

Bath wins for me too. We recently installed a new suite and I just had to have another corner bath. Love the length and width they have. I really miss it when we are away from home and dread the day I can no longer get in or out of it. It is even higher than the last one! I tend to forget about the water bill, after all, "I'm worth it".

Good thing Bath Knight went bust. My Mum was talked into one by a 'very friendly and helpful' representative and it was awful. You expect to be lowered into the water as it moves but because it only works on one side you find that you have to keep shuffling to remain in the centre, not easy on a non slip surface and of course if the surface was slippery it would probably be dangerous. She was in her late 80s and very upset about the whole saga.

We had our awful pink corner bath removed 3 years ago in the main bathroom and a large corner shower fitted instead which is great. The en-suite bathroom which is part of an extension is actually larger than the main one so has the bath in it as well as a double shower. The bath was used every night when my grandchildren were here for 6 weeks but otherwise I don't have a bath very often. When my parents were finding it difficult to get in and out of bath the council installed grab rails by the wall shower which my dad used and we bought one of the rise and fall seats for my mum. It was very good but when my MIL bought one she said you had to put more water in the bath to cover you so wouldn't use it!

This is inspiring me to try having a bath and seeing if I can get out of it still. If I lost weight it would be easier.

I love my bath and dread the time when I will have difficulty getting in and out. We do have an en-suite shower and also an over bath shower (for visitors) and I shower most days, but I do have (and look forward to) a bath a couple of times a week. As I shower regularly I don’t consider that I am sitting in my ‘filth’ and will continue to use it as long as I can. DH renovated the bathroom last year but was fully supportive of having the bath, even though he never uses it.

When our house was on the market 25 years ago it was apparently notorious for not having a bath! Having younger children at the time, we did have a bath fitted. We’ve even had the bath replaced when refurbishing the bathroom. However it’s only used when GS is visiting as he has excema and an oat bath (pop sock full of porridge oats) is very soothing. Apart from that, it’s showers all the way.

Maryeliza, thanks, having watched the link to the Bath Knight type, I was beginning to think, no. Then I read the account of Shandi's mum's experience, and decided that type is not for me. The one you have, Maryeliza sounds ideal, and I will think seriously about having one later on, especially as I may very well need a second knee replacement in the near future. Thanks to all who have given their experiences.

I've just returned from a break in the Canaries, and the bath was very very low, with a shower over. It was very easy to step over but still big enough to fill up and use as a bath. I actually felt much more comfortable using the shower there than I do using my own over bath shower. I've never ever seen a bath that low but if I became unable to get my bath I'd scour the shops/internet to try to find one.
