Absolutely agree with you kittylester. I can also bore for England vouch for the Alzheimer's Society. I'd never have coped when my parents were ill without Talking Point. I am now involved with the Side by Side Befriending initiative and I know they do a great deal of other stuff locally to support those affected - directly and indirectly.

That's good to know Ourkid. I volunteer on the CrISP Programme and various other things like the Road Shows, Memory Walk and, this year, we are having a whole week's exhibition at Leicester Cathedral so hopefully we will be able to contact lots of people who think they are coming to the Richard lll exhibition and get waylaid approached very politely by us!

My Mum had Alzheimer's but what really made me volunteer was when people of our very young age were being diagnosed and their spouses were left high and dry by the medics and only got the help they needed when they found out about the Alzheimer's Society for themselves.

Which is why I bang on about the great work they/we do!!

I was a member for 2-3 yrs whilst caring for mum. I found the forum invaluable.

The lack of care services for dementia sufferers and their family careers is disgraceful in a civilised society. Good for you, Kitty, please continue banging on. My feeble contribution, apart from always buying Alzheimer’s Society Xmas cards, is to regularly pull up people who lightly talk of ‘senile moments’ or suchlike expressions (teenage moments a better expression anyway since no one is more forgetful than teenagers). ‘Senile moments’ makes me livid. People are surprised when I pounce on them, but they usu see the point - or pretend to.

I don't know the etiquette for bumping one's own thread but I'm keen to spread the word, so I have done!

It’s a good word to spread kitty so bump away. When my mum was diagnosed we left the clinic and that was the last we heard. We were on our own, I was in shock.
I found Alzheimer’s society, they were both help and support. I do the memory walks and always buy the raffle tickets and have written them into our wills.
When they introduced alzheimer friends I wondered if that would help at all, but I think it’s been an excellent way of getting through to people so they understand much more.
Still a lot of work to do before we get treatment which will work but at least it’s much higher profile now,
