Apparently it's Tony Blair's fault. According to Patrick Kidd, TB pronounces Brexit with a double gg.

Bella; not saying grin. By the way, on the subject of pronouncing things, did anyone watch the programme onBBC4 last night about 'illusions'. It showed something called the McGurk [sp] effect where someone was saying bah bah bah, but then continued to say it but showing a face that was saying fah fah fah, and you could only hear 'fah' not 'bah' even though you knew it was 'bah'. Whole programme was fascinating.

I notice that Prime Minister is often pronounced as Pri- Minister. In this house Brexit is pronounced as clusterf*ck. grin

How on earth did “evacuees” appear in my post earlier this morning?
I clearly wrote debacle but oh no, iPad knows best apparently confused

Bellanonna Thu 01-Mar-18 11:23:16

Where do you put the ‘h’ Tegan ?

Tegan2 Thu 01-Mar-18 11:07:47

I always add an 'h'....

Bellanonna Thu 01-Mar-18 11:06:27

We all do ?

MissAdventure Thu 01-Mar-18 11:04:33

Who says 'I scream' instead of 'ice cream'?

Bellanonna Thu 01-Mar-18 11:02:43

I say ekksit but eggist. Both followed by I.

Mapleleaf Thu 01-Mar-18 10:46:20

However it's pronounced, I'm sick of hearing about it!??(All the arguing on TV is getting on my nerves, I'd rather deal with a class of 5 year olds again ?)

Bellanonna Thu 01-Mar-18 10:16:24

Agree, Maw ?

Bellanonna Thu 01-Mar-18 10:14:12

Well I’m a southerner who says Brekksit.. Nobody I know says it differently but I do hear Breggsit on TV quite a lot.
Eggsam amd eggsactly, though. Eggsacerbate, eggsample. Maybe it’s the following letter A thst hardens the X?

MamaCaz Thu 01-Mar-18 10:06:23

As a northerner , I have to say That I also thought 'breg-zit' was a southern thing!

MawBroon Thu 01-Mar-18 08:43:41

I am afraid how it is pronounced is the least of my complaints about the whole evacuees. hmm

Chewbacca Thu 01-Mar-18 08:40:26

Eggzactly

Baggs Thu 01-Mar-18 08:02:13

No. Execute is an exxy one. What about exam?

cavewoman Thu 01-Mar-18 07:32:55

Execute?

Baggs Thu 01-Mar-18 06:42:51

Now I'm trying to think of a word in which I soften x to gz......

Can we make that a thing on this thread, please, watermeadow?

Baggs Thu 01-Mar-18 06:40:45

I'm northern (Yorks, Lancs, various bits of Scotland) and I pronounce it Breksit. I thought Bregzit was a southern aberration ?

watermeadow Thu 01-Mar-18 06:02:28

My hackles rise every time I hear someone on the radio say, Breg-zit and that’s 100 times daily.
I know that’s the northern way of pronouncing X but everyone seems to be saying it. To me it’s Brek-sit. Along with Ek-sit, Tak-si, Foks-glove.
How do they pronounce X where you come from?
