If you were in charge, what would be the three things you would do?

Following on from my furious comments about religious schools and my wish that they would be abolished, I thought perhaps we could all detail things we would do/laws we would make/outlaw if we were to be in charge. Needn't be 3 things, but no more please. My first would be, predictably, abolition of faith schools and all schools which only accept pupils of a certain religion. My other two will need narrowing down from a multitude grin. What would be your choices? Can be serious or not.

1. Cancel HS2 It only benefits a small area of the UK and money can be better spent.
2. Abolish all faith schools and ensure that a wide and thorough curriculum is taught in schools including British History. (I know this has been said above, but I think it is important as well.)
3 Make it much easier to deport persistent criminals from overseas who have killed, raped etc. and who milk our system.

Dust off the original guidelines for benefit system when it was first introduced and use these for payments today.
Employ more triage staff at A&E with the power to send people away if they have complaints which can be dealt with elsewhere. ( Just talked to someone who was there with elderly mother who had broken her wrist and was seen after someone who had gone in with a nosebleed!!!?
All government departments with large budgets to employ a gran to check spending and source cheaper items. ?

Get rid of the companies making a profit out of assessing those needing benefits, and fund the system properly.
Sort out the pensions (both state and occupational) debacle.
Pay qualified public servants the going rate, so we have enough nurses, doctors, teachers. (Never understood why supply and demand never improved for their salaries)

1. Agree with abolish faith schools. Am sad about this though, as some of them are very good. But the downside of the ones that are problematic is just too huge to ignore, and if they are to be closed there is probably no way to pick and choose to save others :-(
2. spitting in public = immediate community service order to clean public footpaths and pick litter, plus wash mouth out with carbolic soap and water. Tuberculosis is back, and spitting's a disgusting habit anyway. I'd also fine professional footballers and rugby players who do it on the pitch, as they are role models.
3. can't think of a third. Surprisingly tolerant for this snowy Wednesday!

I would like to see people charged for nuisance / stupid calls to emergency services, 100quid on their phone bills for each one. People who ring to ask why there is no KFC etc.

First family first, would be my mantra so that children are not stuck in the benefirs traps and inheritance minefields. People would not be so keen to bunk off with new partners if they knew their income and assets were properly committed elsewhere.

More critical thinking and perhaps more anthropological approaches, than the current sciological ones which do not seem to have served us very well. Currently need is rewarded and that generates neediness and is generally unhealthy.

Definitely push for research and trials of medicinal applications of cannabis.
Give young parents financial support so they are in a position to stay at home with children if they want to
Remove all generational, cultural, religious etc. reasons to attack and divide our society.

LynneB59 Wed 28-Feb-18 11:06:30

Definitely abolish ALL religion in schools.

Stop all this PC nonsense about people being offended by certain words - get a grip.

Bring back the death penalty for all terrorists, murderers, child molesters and rapists.

Ban the use of animals being used for entertainment purposes

Alter the welfare benefits system - how is it that so many unemployed people end up with more spare money than those of us who work?

That's my little rant finished

shysal, you obviously don't believe in democracy if you think an elected leader should only be someone you like!!
My 3 would be:
* reducing our country's population by about 20 million (last in, first out) and stop encouraging people to have children by giving financial rewards. This would solve the housing crisis in one fell swoop.
* let the punishment fit the crime e,g, if people are caught littering then the council should use their house to empty their town bins in!! All criminals should use their own funds or possession to compensate their victims and certainly no luxuries like taking degrees, sky tv etc.while in prison
* people should take responsibility for their and their families' actions and not expect the state, NHS and others to take over.

Build more social housing
Double the Council Tax on second/holiday homes
Reduce the cost of private rental to no more than 10% above social housing rental.

Maggiemaybe Wed 28-Feb-18 11:26:09

All schools to be brought back into public control immediately, properly regulated, and all children to go to nearest one. Extra funding and support for those in poorer areas.

More stations to be re-opened, and huge investment to be made in all public transport, making it a valid and affordable option to clogging up the roads. HS2 to be cancelled.

Public enquiries and trials to be conducted and done with within 6 months, instead of dragging on for years.

Maggiemaybe Wed 28-Feb-18 11:28:55

Oh, and less importing of stuff we can easily produce here. Apples, for instance.

sandelf Wed 28-Feb-18 11:45:16

I would get rid of ALL the present taxes/duties/customs.
(That's the popular bit). Replace with one tax - a purchase tax on anything/everything you buy at just one rate. I'd set the rate to cover the government expenses for defence, education, health and income support. It would be understandable, rich people would pay more (they buy bigger houses, more stuff) it would be hard to avoid. - I'm sure there'd be problems but the present system where nobody understands it and rich people seem to avoid tax needs change.

Nanny27 Wed 28-Feb-18 11:51:28

Limit unemployment benefit to 6 months. Then maybe at 50% for a further 6 months. Then stop.
Reduce all first degree courses to 2 years. Students should study for at least46 weeks a year and it would make university education more affordable.
Use prisoners for litter clearance along roadsides and in the countryside like other countries do.

grumppa Wed 28-Feb-18 11:53:43

Transportation to Van Dieman's Land or Botany Bay of all those people who would use their power to ban something or someone.

That's enough from me.

LJP1 Wed 28-Feb-18 12:01:51

Make power generation from renewable resources compulsory.

Stop CEOs of big businesses getting huge and undeserved bonuses

Prosecute and retrieve the money from those businessmen who have milked their organisations and left their workers with no pensions.

sarahellenwhitney Wed 28-Feb-18 12:04:43

GillT57
I agree with you on banning of religious schools and that religion should not have a part in any school
There should be code of conduct what one wears to school as there is far too much' you and us' in the world.

varian Wed 28-Feb-18 12:05:28

I would like to abolish war, disease and povetty worldwide, but if I couldn't manage all that I'd replace FPTP by PR for all elections, send all children to integrated schools and cancel brexit.

Anniebach Wed 28-Feb-18 12:05:34

Make grumppa P.M.

Nonnie Wed 28-Feb-18 12:06:41

marpau oh I do agree with "Employ more triage staff at A&E with the power to send people away if they have complaints which can be dealt with elsewhere." Maybe all those staff nurses who work in clinics taking patients from the waiting area to see the consultant and then waiting around for the next one to go in. Never understood why that couldn't be done by basic admin. Not, of course any clinics where dressing etc need to be done.

Joan Wed 28-Feb-18 12:08:09

Legalise cannabis for medicinal and recreational use.

Teach a second language from grade 1 (i.e. age 5) through total immersion method ( being bi-lingual is good for the brain, and pre-puberty kids learn another language naturally)

Teach philosophy in schools, also from age 5 (there are simple age-appropriate lessons) This would help with imagination, which needs to be developed in all humans.

Auntieflo Wed 28-Feb-18 12:23:38

About the point of not taking things to a local Tip unless it has been rejected first by a charity shop, I think some people offload to charity shops, when they should have taken their rubbish to the tip in the first place. Apart from that, I agree with most posts on here.

Oldwoman70 Wed 28-Feb-18 12:26:40

I wouldn't ban faith schools, but would insist that the aims and ethos of all religions be taught alongside. It would show that many religions have the same beliefs.

Punishment to fit the crime - littering = litter picking, vandalism = repairing the damage and paying for the materials, tagging = cleaning graffiti

Concentration on victims of crime rather than the rights of the criminal.

luzdoh Wed 28-Feb-18 12:33:09

GillT57 Total agreement on faith schools. (And I am a very dedicated Christian)

2] Ban advertising of betting on TV or anywhere. OH! why not? Let's ban betting shops and all that Casino rubbish altogether!

3a] Ban people setting up as "Therapists" with those invented qualifications from amateur organisations and especially ban them from putting dangerously misleading videos (especially about mental illnesses) online, e.g. on You Tube.

3b] People who are cruel to animals or children should be publicly shamed, put in a shop window kind of jail with a big notice giving their name and crime so all can see how evil they are.

Matron01 Wed 28-Feb-18 12:38:23

No right to buy your Council house/social landlord house until every single person is adequately housed. Automatic sacking of any politician who tells lies. Passing a law that makes it illegal to privatise the NHS , railways and public utilities.

p1nkpr1ncess Wed 28-Feb-18 12:40:31

Ooooohhh where to start!
1. Bring back policeman on the beat with pay rises
2. Bring back matrons on the wards with it how it was in the 50's with nurses at a desk in the ward (not stood chatting at a "station" outside the ward) limited visiting and quiet wards
3. Life to mean life for murder and serious crimes

Wish I could have more than 3!
