Shifting, lifting, lugging and moving.

We sold a second floor apartment last year and moved the entire contents ourselves including 2 sofas, 2 beds, wardrobe and very heavy sideboard. My husband had planned it down to the last item and with the help of two trolleys and the lift we managed to get it all packed into a hire van successfully in one trip. Arriving back at our house an hour later it was completely the opposite story! We have 2 steps into the small hall and trying to lift the sideboard out of the van and up these steps was nigh on impossible - I'm a weakling with anything heavy and in the end we had to shove it along on sheets and cardboard till we got it into the living room on it's top when we could push it down to the other end! The sofas weren't much easier and the wardrobe got stuck on the stairs as he tried to push with me trying to pull it up - it ended up trapping my foot underneath resulting in heavy bruising and much shouting (and swearing on his part)! If there's ever a next time we'll hire a removal firm!!

Sorry laughing Willow but you remind me of the Laurel and Hardy film where they pushed up a piano on some steep stairs and then it slipped all the way down! Hope your bruising has gone.

Reminds me of the Bernard Cribbins song ‘Right said Fred’ sorry, shouldn’t laugh, but really, that’s what Removal men are for, too dangerous all the lifting. Hope you have settled in now and it’s all a dim and distant memory.

Yes, we did some of the same only a few years ago when we had to move some heavy furniture upstairs, I remember that we tied ropes around it with a loop at the front, then the donkey (me)put the rope around its (my) middle and stood halfway up the stairs and heaved while the donkey driver (DH) shoved from the bottom of the stairs as we progressed oh so slowly upwards! Such fun!!!

About ten years ago I needed to get a single bed down two flights of stairs on my own I did it but it must have been hilarious if a fly in the wall I swear the mattress took me down not the other way round we negotiated the bends in the stairs better than an skier bu5 I can only imagine the look on my face
I have more than once seen people moving house with supermarket trolleys I think it’s fairly mainstream I live in a transient community and one day counted 12 trollies down the back alley I rang the supermarket up to do a bulk pick up (I m not suggesting they were all house movers)?

There was another unfortunate furniture moving experience which took place at the beginning of Dec. We had bought a set of bunk beds in the autumn in preparation for the arrival of our grandchildren and their parents for a 6 week visit at Christmas. The bunks are very heavy and my husband had to build them in situ in the smallest bedroom. He kept asking me if there was anything I needed out of the cupboard they are in front of but as it only contained Christmas decs I said I'd leave it. He was adamant the beds would be impossible to move but of course I knew best and come Dec I told him I needed to be in the cupboard so could we pull the bunks out sideways so I could open the door. Much sweating and with the use of some laminate flooring he managed to get them at an angle where I climbed over the bottom bunk and got all the boxes out. Then we had a problem - I couldn't get back out. The picture below is one of several he took (the least embarrassing one!) as I squeezed under the beds and got stuck - partly due to having hysterics and having to strip off to be able to slide!! Needless to say the boxes have not gone back in the cupboard!
