Anyone else saving up for a light bulb?

I love reading. Mainly crime fiction books. The trouble I have is my husband keeps talking to me, I answer him, then find I’m reading the paragraph I’ve already read all over again. I find this very annoying. Yes, I do moan at him about it. Makes no difference, he still does it.

We have been gradually changing lighting since moving here as it was literally like going back to the dark ages. The light fittings are the same as were put in by the builders at the beginning of the 70s so we are renewing those and have changed to led as we go but it is hideously expensive. One workmen told me to put the old glass shades on eBay as they are retro! I suppose that might help with the costs but such a faff that I don't think I can go to those lengths.

Our kitten has discovered flies and when we returned to the sitting room after dinner the other night we found all the lamps overturned and shades knocked off but fortunately only one led bulb in a standard lamp broken but as everyone says they are so expensive! He didn't even catch the fly of course but in the interests of curtailing any further damage DH and I did. Kitten still had to check for more but he was very pleased with us! He is not going to be left alone in there again if I can help it even if he is asleep!

jacq10 You can buy LED bulbs in different shades of white. We buy bulbs described as 'warm white'. We did, once, accidentally, buy some very white ones and, yes, it looked as if we were lighting our house with fluorescent tubes, but there should be a choice. You could also buy a lower wattage bulb.

I bought some LED bulbs, and they gave us a headache. I can get halogen bulbs in Robert Dyas, which are more like the old incandescent bulbs.

The one I bought in the pound shop say 'heavy duty, not for household use' on them. I was very annoyed

I'm not so much bothered about the price just about the brightness! We have a 3-light fitting with candle shaped bulbs in our sitting-room and I replaced a bulb last week which is obviously the newer type. It looked the same as before but it is very white. I am obviously going to have to replace the other two as it looks really stupid but I don't really like the brightness and would prefer a softer light. I have a daylight side light for reading and a standard mother and child light which suits us fine and only occasionally use the main light but I don't think I'll be using it all now!

P.S. I am looking for a newer Motor home...

I am converting to smart bulbs, voice control for colour and brightness, between 15 and 25 quid a bulb but dimmable and colour by voice control.

Alexa turn on "whatever Light" is cool and good for the wow factor for grandchildren, also all the other things that can be done the same way...

life is so much better with Led's and also the cost of running them !!!

Just got a return fare from Herts to the NEC tomorrow for £6.85 for the motorhome show too.... bonus with disabled carsd .. which is cheaper than the old persons card... me I have hearing aids which qualify !! go figure

Another advantage of LED bulbs is that they don’t heat up as much as the old ones. Before there were always black spots on the ceiling above them. Best price I’ve found is Screwfix.

DH is saying now that there's no point in buying long life bulbs as he doesn't expect he'll last another 25 years.

I've just changed all our bulbs to LED, £3.99 for 4 at Home Bargains its the best price I have found. Lots of different ones to choose from as well.

Quizqueen The new LED lights are entirely different from the old luminescent low energy bulbs that took ages to warm up and give a decent light. LEDs switch on and off like the old style bulbs and you have instant clear lighting.

Isn't that worth investigating and trying them if it results in your lighting electricity bill being reduced by 90%? What you spend on the bulb you save on the electricity.

Go online to buy bulbs or from an electricity wholesaler. They are so much cheaper than buying them from any High Street store or supermarket. Online, you can buy 5 or 7 watt bulbs for £5 or less.

I am buying mine at Aldi. Replacing them as the others fail.

Another vote for LED , we too swapped-on the advise of ds who explained the savings in electricity bills and the improvement in brightness compared to our halogen. They have been amazing in difference.

had a new kitchen 2 years ago had 8 led lights put in two just went last week £10 each,wow ,its a expensive at least they did not all go at once

I still buy the old sort of light bulbs. They sell them in bulk in my local hardware store on a shelf marked 'illegal' !!!...... but at least I can still see in my house. about £12 for 10. 100 watt bayonet.

We bought a replacement light fitting for the bathroom from Ikea. It cost £9, - the bulb to fit it cost £8 !!!

We changed to LED light bulbs last year when we moved into our new house. We bought them at the local DIY store and yes, they were expensive, but as they are supposed to last for thirty years and we are both over 60, we assume we won't be buying all that many light bulbs!

I discovered this winter that you have to be careful when screwing them into a light fitting that it does not unscrew itself while you are putting in the new bulb. If it does the new bulb certainly does not last 30 years - 30 hours is more like it.

Apart from that we are satisfied with them, and we have saved quite a bit on our electricity bill, but as the company that supplied our electricity has been amalgamated twice with others in the year and a half we have been living here, and as all our new electric equipment, washing machine, dryer, vacuum, freezer and fridge are ones that use the least possible electricity, I can't really work out how much of our saving is due to the light bulbs.
