Not sure that would work

I recently found a recipe for chicken legs with very thinly sliced truffles inserted between the skin and the flesh and then roasted on potatoes which were mixed with cream and parmesan. Thought they would be nice for DH and I on Sunday.

On my normal Sainsbury's shop I asked if they sold truffles as I couldn't find them. The nice young man rang somebody to establish whether they did and where they might be. Finishing his phone call he offered to take me to them. I trotted obediently along behind him to find myself in the chocolate aisle. grin

This brought back some memories. My mum once asked a young lad in Sainsbury’s where their black pudding was and he took her down the cake isle. Still makes me smile.

Always put a couple of squares of dark chocolate in my chilli to melt through just before serving it. Seems to deepen the flavour. Tried a recipe recently for a Brazilian pork stew with cocoa in it.

Apologies for my ignorance but does bacon jam taste of bacon?
I am imagining a bacon sandwich with cranberry jelly, is that close?

I remember years ago when I worked as a catering manager and my chef wanted truffles for a special menu. I rang a very posh store with a food hall in Manchester and was promptly directed to the sweetie counter. We never did get real truffles.

Love it !! I recently asked the young man in Aldi if they sold Horlicks. "What's Horlicks ?" he asked.

Years ago DS worked with a Mexican engineer who was on a six month contract. They became good friends and he would repay our invitations to Sunday lunch by cooking us some lovely authentic Mexican meals. Chicken mole was my favourite.

He hated our bog standard version of chilli-con-carne. The beans had to be mashed, re-fried and served separately.

I still have a supermarket Mexican cook book with his pencilled notes in the margin. I can never remember what, 'Everything is GREEN' was supposed to mean but I think it referred to the amount of chillis.

My stepdaughter needed Marsala for a recipe and sent her DH to Sainsburys for it. When he asked if they had any he was sent to the curry section! When he explained that his wife had asked for Marsala wine the assistant said " she's pulling your leg mate! No such thing"

Some say that "proper" chilli con carne should have dark chocolate in it, and I've seen a few bambi venison recipes that include it too.

You can definitely combine chicken and chocolate. The Mexican dish 'mole' which is usually made using turkey has some dark chocolate mixed into the sauce. goodfood.uktv.co.uk/recipe/turkey-mole/

When I worked in a large chemist I was asked by a young man where the French Letters were sold. Totally innocently I sent him to the stationery department! He gave me an incredulous look and wandered off . The worldly wise senior had hysterics.

Sounds like the young girl in my local Co-op, who just before Christmas, when I asked whether they had any mincemeat, guided me to the fresh meat section... When I explained that I wanted it to make my mince pies, she looked astonished and said, 'You can make mince pies..?? shock

If you can get to a decent sized Waitrose, try Urbani black summer truffle in truffle juice.
It's lovely grated over an omelette, or sliced very thinly on toast, then topped with cheese!
Oooh, Bacon Jam, I know it only comes in a tiny jar, but I think it may be my greed that means it never lasts more than an hour after opening in this house! In fact, it doesn't always get served with anything, more scooped out of the jar with a teaspoon and straight into my mouth!

Ha ha, yes, chocolate and chicken sounds like a 'could be' combination.
I wanted to make a flower arrangement once using oasis to keep the flowers fresh. Didn't know where to get it (now know that Hobbycraft sells a ton) so asked in a charity shop if they had any. After all, that's where my stock went when I had a clear out years ago. The helpful assistant (bit younger than me) seemed to know right away what I wanted and came round the counter and led me to ....... the CDs. It dawned on me that she was looking for the band Oasis, so I hastily told her that I wanted it for flower arranging and I wouldn't have an Oasis cd in the house!

How the other half lives! ?
Bacon jam?

carol58 Fri 16-Feb-18 13:23:07

Truffles? Goji berries? Bacon jam? Be lucky to find more than one kind of apple in the shops near me....

Jaycee5 Fri 16-Feb-18 13:05:27

sue01 That made me laugh.

Aepgirl Fri 16-Feb-18 11:36:54

I once asked the fish monger in my supermarket if they had any whitebait. He asked if I wanted it filleted. Can you imagine a fillet of whitebait? He had no idea what it was, and said the nearest they had was whiting!

Incidentally, I've never heard of bacon jam either and I live down south.

kittylester Fri 16-Feb-18 11:34:52

I've seen that in ours adaunas!! It was near the chutneys. I'll swap if you come across any truffles. What do you use it for? Sounds odd.

adaunas Fri 16-Feb-18 11:31:36

Your recipe sounds lovely- hope you find the truffles. Had a similar problem with trying to buy Bacon Jam. Was neither in the bacon nor the jam aisle. It had been recommended by Sainsbury’s too, but they’d never heard of it in our up north branch.

Years ago I asked the Manager of the tiny local Co-Op if they had crème fraiche..... he looked at me and then said... you're not from round here are you ??

sweetcakes Fri 16-Feb-18 11:10:13

Google that's what I do when I want something specific and can't find it in the shops or try amazon. Enjoy.

Nanna58 Fri 16-Feb-18 10:38:55

I asked a young thing for pease pudding in Sainsbury's the other day and was taken to the dessert aisle!

harrigran Fri 16-Feb-18 08:33:12

You need a Waitrose kitty, or there again maybe not. I asked about fresh goji berries and they said "sadly, no, but we can get you a plant to grow your own" I don't think even a Waitrose sourced plant would provide me with berries for the dinner I was preparing the next day grin
