Megan Markle has been making secret visits to comfort the survivors of Grenfel Towers , just like Diana use to make secret visits !

meandashy Tue 13-Feb-18 12:34:09

I couldn't give two hoots about any of the monarchy or what they do or don't do. I'd love to know if any of the people of Grenfell felt any benefit from Megan's visit?? If they did then great, if not then it will be looked on by some as a publicity stunt to win feathers for her royal hat!!!

Theoddbird Iam64 (wish I was still) and others, Well said! To be born into the Royal family is a bad enough burden to carry, to fall in love with a member of it is very hard. I'm sure her visits do help people. Good for her! Diana used to pop in and see a boy from ordinary home whom she met by chance when he was very ill - I'm being discreet - and no one knew until she died. She was helped by the Police who moved her into different cars to protect her and the boy's family and she kept up her visits to see how he was. People can be kind without asking for rewards.

Ajnela, you raised some valid points. I was thinking along similar lines. She is used to doing humanitarian work and may want to feel useful. Give her a chance.
I am not a royalist but I don't feel the need to slag them off all the time.

Jalima1108 Tue 13-Feb-18 12:06:31

Some people seem very bothered though Maw

MawBroon Tue 13-Feb-18 12:03:19

Another example of pearl clutching?
Is anybody really bothered?
I am agog with indifference.

Re some comments on here
I had a mean Nan & I didn't love her at all. Be careful.... you reap what you sew.

Oldwoman70 Tue 13-Feb-18 11:54:09

She is not a "new Diana", neither is Kate, they are women in their own right with their own good and bad points. I really wish people would not make such comparisons. Diana married into a family with very different views than Kate and now Meghan will be marrying into. They will both have husbands who respect and support them.

craftynan Tue 13-Feb-18 11:53:32

Totally agree, Luckygirl. They can’t help being born into a privileged life and I would hate to be constantly watched and criticised wherever I go.

peaches50 Tue 13-Feb-18 11:48:20

well said ajanela, Theoddbird andsweetcakes. Why do some of us love to build people up and then take pleasure to rip them down is it a national trait? I hope not. Harry is lucky to have this young woman who is so different from the complacent china dolls they usually try and push on the Royals (the establishment failing spectacularly with Diana and Fergie) . Megan was doing humanitarian work long before she met him. Maybe he sees the traits of his beloved and missed mother in her (and neither he or Wills were blind to Diana's faults - they were paraded by the many men who betrayed her.)
Good for Megan. Re secret visits - would you have preferred a press call ala Mr Corbyn, the hugs and tears...?

Jalima1108 Tue 13-Feb-18 11:46:43

Meghan Markle is not a Mother Theresa or a Princess Diana.
I hope not. I hope she carries on with her campaigns as she has done for years, drawing attention to women's rights around the world. She had made a name for herself as a campaigner over many years; racial inequality, gender inequality, Clean Water Campaign etc, spoken at the UN.

gillybob Tue 13-Feb-18 11:46:04

Diana had an eating disorder before she married a Windsor

And marrying into that family ( a man who clearly didn’t love her) will have done so much to help that.....not .

sunseeker Tue 13-Feb-18 11:43:34

radicalgran so because we want someone to be given a chance to prove themselves, a person who has supported charities for years we are "sucking up". I don't know this young woman personally (and I think you probably don't) so let's just give her a chance instead of pouring scorn on anything she does just because of who she is marrying.

Jalima1108 Tue 13-Feb-18 11:38:42

A very rich royal would be a great comfort to me if I'd lost everything in a fire. Just a few words, perhaps a hug and off she trots back to her immensely privileged life. Yeah, very uplifting
As Meghan came from humble beginnings and has worked her way to being a rich woman in her own right it doesn't mean she has forgotten where she came from. She has shown compassion and campaigned for women's rights for years long before she met Harry.

Some Grenfell residents may feel like that but I am sure others would feel uplifted by her visit and her undoubted warmth.

She wasn't born with a silver spoon and I think she's very brave to jump into the goldfish bowl that is the Royal Family.
I do hope she knows what she's letting herself in for because whatever she does, however hard she tries in future, there will always be the detractors waiting on the sidelines.

Larsonsmum Tue 13-Feb-18 11:38:13

Good for her.

Luckygirl Tue 13-Feb-18 11:37:00

We feed them and their desire to lord it over other people by turning up and applauding how they spend our money.

How do you know they have a desire to lord it over others. They did not choose this role - they were born into it. It gives them lots of financial and other privileges; and they lose a great deal in terms of privacy and being able to lead anything vaguely resembling a normal life.

It was not their choice - they found themselves in this situation and are (most of them) doing what has been asked of them. And some are doing more - e.g. these visits to former Grenfell Tower dwellers. Who knows but these people are happy to know that folk in high places have not forgotten them?

I am not a royalist - but we have a monarchy and I acdcept that at this moment.

sarahellenwhitney Tue 13-Feb-18 11:36:21

Meghan Markle is not a Mother Theresa or a Princess Diana. One wonders if the palace were aware of these 'secret visits? this I doubt as the press would have been informed. She needs to learn ,regardless of her compassion for the unfortunate ,that she is but for the 'joining in marriage' a member of the royal family and poses a security risk. Beautiful, compassionate but spare us another Diana pleeeease?

Jalima1108 Tue 13-Feb-18 11:33:04

I can't take your post seriously radicalnan, perhaps you say these things just to get a reaction.

OldMeg Tue 13-Feb-18 11:32:07

I personally don’t give a toss about the royals but I’d certainly never be so vindictive.

OldMeg Tue 13-Feb-18 11:30:47

Nasty, nasty, nasty post radicalgran get a grip.

ReadyMeals Tue 13-Feb-18 11:28:33

As least Meghan isn't being called Waity Meghan like poor Kate. She's getting on with her life

radicalnan Tue 13-Feb-18 11:26:51

Honestly??????

Why do so many of you want to suck up to people who you will never know and who really are just leeches?

We have seen Kate's t*ts in the foreign tabloids and pretty well all of this one on the screen, they are the same as us (well when we were younger) they do not care more, dress better, or love their kids any differently.

We feed them and their desire to lord it over other people by turning up and applauding how they spend our money.

Where is your self respect ladies?

I think they all stink, time for a republic and less adoration for people in power. Look at the OXFAM scandal, every bloody scandal in fact, they have their roots in the same beliefs that some people are more worthy than others, some are unassailable whatever they do........we perpetuate that system when we make such a fuss over 'celebs' and royals.

Craftycat Tue 13-Feb-18 11:23:51

I know very little about the woman but if she is trying to behave in a kind & compassionate way then good on her!
Anything that brings the plight of these people to the public's attention can only be a good thing. Still in B&B after so many months with thousands of empty properties sitting empty in London owned by foreign millionaires waiting for the market to increase so they can sell them for even more profits. It is scandalous. I know a Thai man who has been living in 'friends' properties all over London for 4 years now. I have seen photos of the places he stays in & they are sumptuous. He moves on when he gets fed up with them & fancies a change. He owns 3 houses himself too which he lets. The government should slap CPOs on any property empty &not on market for 6 months immediately.
Leave the woman alone & give her a chance- maybe she will be less inhibited than our own Royals ( for whom I have great respect) & do some real good.

mernice Tue 13-Feb-18 11:23:28

Oh dear,do some people comment on here just to stir things up? Surely some of these comments aren’t how people really feel. Gransnet? Whose Grans are they and I hope they aren’t passing on any of those unkind, sarcastic, cynical views to their grandchildren.

NannyMargaret48 Tue 13-Feb-18 11:14:59

Here we go again. We are all entitled to our opinions and in this country are lucky enough to be able to voice them. But it is the sheer nastiness that is such a disappointment. I feel ashamed to be a woman some times.
