Do you have an afternoon nap?

I sleep poorly and function on 4 - 5 hours per night. Sometimes I nod off while reading or watching tv.
But I don't purposefully go and lie down for a nap.

Today I had two appointments in the same hospital. One at 10am was an xray which took 5 minutes, and the other at 2pm was an ECG which only took a few minutes. So there I was with a 4 hour layover, not worth while going home as the journey is 1 hour each way. And also this morning at 8.30am my car had to be pushed up the drive and up the hill because it couldn't get a grip in the snow.

I took myself to the coffee shop with my Kindle and settled myself for the duration. Hmmm.... several times I felt myself nod, was fearful of actually drifting off - snoring - etc.

I remember in hospital in 1966 we all had a nap after lunch and then after noon tea and biscuits. Very civilized!

Jane10 I grew up in a family where we had to go to our rooms after lunch and be quiet - read or similar -because the adults are "resting".

I do power naps - 20 minutes or so and I'm refreshed. But every Saturday afternoon I sleep blissfully from 2 until 4 p.m. starting off with reading, until "my eyes go". smile

When I was a girl (ie not yesterday!) it felt like everyone had a rest after lunch. I was often bored stiff with all the grandparents and aunties etc conked out. Now I understand.

Not usually but am not well at the moment only a heavy cold and cough but really feel I am only firing on half cylinders so actually went back to bed this afternoon and slept . It remains to be seen whether I'll sleep ok tonight

My husband just has to sit down and in minutes he is fast asleep. Same thing at night, 30 seconds and he is away.

I cant sleep in the day ( and i do try) and my nights arent much better. So proof that it is possible to carry on a relatively (!) normal life with a minimal amount of sleep.

Always tired in the afternoon as I don't sleep well at night but somehow I just can't let myself take a nap. It would feel like I was giving in to getting older!

I wish I could but I can't cat nap.

MissAdventure Fri 09-Feb-18 16:36:20

My afternoon naps never work out as planned. I sleep for hours, always dribble, and wake up feeling awful.
Then, when its bedtime, I can't sleep.

The Wonderful Man can sleep anywhere when he's tired and wake up refreshed after as little as ten minutes - he often pulls over on a long drive and does this. I, on the other hand, find it really difficult to catnap usually, but since getting shingles last summer tiredness just overtakes me at times and then I sleep on the sofa for an hour or so.

I usually have a nap. The time varies but it's often from about noon (I get up early). The length of the nap varies too but it's usually an hour to an hour and a half.

Most of the time I just lie down and zonk straight out, which also happens when I go to bed at night.

Nights when I wake up and can't get back to sleep are usually because of a fibromyalgia flare up. Fortunately they are not too frequent.

I can sleep for 20 minutes to an hour on an afternoon, it doesn't happen every day but when I feel tired I have to lie down.

Nonnie Fri 09-Feb-18 16:25:06

Isn't a power nap supposed to be good for you?

I've tried going back to bed when unwell but just lie there getting cross because I can't sleep!

I always "put my feet up" after lunch, just for 15 or 20 minutes, but don't sleep. On a Sunday when I have had my main meal at lunch time, I actually go to bed, and usually do sleep, for maybe an hour or longer. I think it recharges my batteries, and has been my habit for many years.

Just had my fifteen minutes max ready to walk the dog now, raining again ?

ninathenana Fri 09-Feb-18 15:52:37

No, but often fall asleep whilst trying to watch a programme in the evening.

JackyB Fri 09-Feb-18 15:48:17

If I don't have a nap, I am useless later in the evening. I can time an afternoon sleep for 10 or 20 minutes and wake up refreshed and ready to go. If I don't, the rest of the day is like wading through honey.

Jane10 Fri 09-Feb-18 15:40:36

Sometimes I just drift off. Its lovely!

Nonnie Fri 09-Feb-18 15:35:53

If I sit down during the day it is usually in my study so not conducive to sleep. I don't sleep well because of the recent stress so would not like to nap in the day. DH always nods off in the evening in front of the TV but it doesn't stop his sleeping at night.

I have a friend who always has a short nap in the afternoon, goes to bed at about 1130 and is often up at 5 am and never later than 7 am. Works for her but I really could do with a good 8 hours or possibly more.

Bridgeit Fri 09-Feb-18 15:30:46

I do sometimes unintentionally fall asleep in the afternoons, but only for about 10-15 mins , it doesn’t seem to affect my night sleep luckily

Charleygirl Fri 09-Feb-18 15:23:38

I do not deliberately sit down for an sfternoon's snooze but the drugs I am taking are like sleeping tablets at times so I try to keep myself busy but it does not always work. I usually still sleep well at night so I tell myself that I needed that half an hour.

vampirequeen Fri 09-Feb-18 15:06:15

If I'm sat down I get sleepy so I try to keep on the move. If I fall asleep then I'm over for hours but still sleep the night. I try not to sleep during the day because I can lose so much of it.

mrsmopp Fri 09-Feb-18 14:53:46

I usually have a good nights sleep, but around 3pm I start feeling very tired. Do you take a nap if that happens? I usually go and do something else to keep myself going. I'm sure if I had a nap I would probably be awake half the night.
I'm 74.
