I usually have one or two glasses at the weekend but rarely in the week. I do sometimes feel tempted in the week but as DH rarely drinks I don’t open a bottle for myself.

What about you.

Meant to say it is a social thing with me. We live apart about four weeks a year and I wouldn't open a bottle to drink by myself then and don't really miss it. H
e drinks more when alone though which is worrying.

I drink the odd glass of wine, but my preferred drink is a Bloody Mary in the evening. Just a small glass before supper. I enjoy it ?

Don't drink Monday to Thursday. My DH and I have a bottle of Cava or Prosecco between us on Friday, a bottle of Champagne is opened on Saturday which lasts over until Sunday and the DH has some red wine with his meals on Saturday and Sunday. I also have a tiddly glass of Cointreau after dinner at the weekend.

Then back to Puritanical rinse and repeat on Monday.

I don’t remember my parents drinking alcohol apart from the odd glass of wine at Xmas. They rarely went out as money was tight and children didn’t get taken into pubs and restaraunts routinely as nowadays. Hence, we all grew up thinking off alcoholic drinks as being for special occasions. Not the case these days though, is it! Alcohol seems very ordinary, almost a human right - how, and why has this happened? Is it a problem, or is it okay? What do you all think?

My walk of shame .... I drink every night apart from 2 nights off each week. I can’t be the only one on here can I? The stats back me up regarding us silver sippers. ????

Small glass Saturday night and Sunday lunch thats it.

I loved wine but since developing gastritis in late 2016 I have had to give up alcohol completely and to be honest I don't miss it at all now. I can enjoy social occasions with a glass of water or a cup of tea. DH likes a beer occasionally but our wine rack is still well stocked and I shall probably end up giving most of it to our DC.

DH and I usually have a very small glass of red every evening with our meal - and I mean small (we have difficulty finding glasses the size we use when we need to replace one).

That and a tiny glass of sherry before Sunday lunch with my 95 yr old Mum!

However before I was 50 we didn't really keep alcohol in the house at all and I was 3 stones lighter. QED

I count myself lucky in that, quite frankly, I don't much care for alcohol, despite living in France. I only take a glass when my (French) partner moans that she's drinking alone. Anything for a peaceful life... (Mind you I quite like an occasional glass of Penderyn!)

We have a glass of white before a meal and a glass of red with a meal. My parents do the same and they are 96 and 97. It is maybe a reason for their longevity!

I usually have a glass when I'm lunching with friends. Can only remember having a refill on one occasion. Don't drink at home.

goldengirl Tue 06-Feb-18 10:06:51

I enjoy a glass of wine or blue beer in the evening with food during the week - about 3 or 4 times - and sometimes have a Baileys when we've had the GC! I never drink during the day

confused Oh I was worried about you having such a rare complaint as video reflux hildajenniJ wink

FarNorth Tue 06-Feb-18 09:48:51

I rarely drink alcohol but over Xmas and new year I kept thinking "Maybe a little drink this evening would be nice".
Of course, during that time, I happened to be taking medication which meant I shouldn't drink.

tanith Tue 06-Feb-18 09:37:54

I don't drink but will take a sip at a toast such as a wedding. OH has a shandy now and then when out with family or friends. I have friends who seem to drink wine every day but it's personal choice I suppose, I think they're bonkers but that's just my opinion.

hildajenniJ Tue 06-Feb-18 09:26:52

Acid reflux!!!

New phone??

hildajenniJ Tue 06-Feb-18 09:25:39

I never drink wine these days as it gives me a video reflux?. I do, however, enjoy a gin and tonic or other mixer. I don't go out and buy it though, and if I do t have any I can't say that I miss it. I was brought up to be tee total and was only introduced to alcohol when I left home. I've never been a big drinker.

We have had similar threads over the years and I am very aware I drink more than most. I share a bottle of wine 3 nights a week with my H.
We will also have a G&T.
I enjoy it, it relaxes me (and him) and our Dr is aware.
Apart from the GC, most of whom I seldom see, it is my only pleasure (or vice) in life.
I am 80 and a half, so not much harm done so far.
Perhaps the 4 nights a week I don't drink shields me from the damage, but at my age I am not precious about having a drink on those days if we have visitors or I go out for a meal.
Those events are so rare that it doesn't really count.

I open a bottle of wine on Sundays to go with lunch, and usually finish the bottle the following Saturday night.

I can go weeks or months without any alcohol, but in answer to your question I open a bottle of wine when ever I feel like it. if my sister is stay then it’s one or even two a night. It’s a good job she doesn’t stay very often. I’ll occasionally open a bottle if a recipe calls for it, then happily drink the rest. If my husband is not working the next day we will somtimes have a drink of wine or gin or whiskey, brandy, vodka, ouzo we’re really not fussygrin I’ve got a good Madeira if anyone fancies joining mewine cheers

Willow500 Tue 06-Feb-18 09:04:50

I generally have a glass of wine each night but I've been so ill over the last couple of weeks I've not touched any. Only ever drink red - don't like spirits.

Charleygirl Tue 06-Feb-18 09:00:11

I open a bottle of wine every 4-5 weeks and drink it over 3 evenings, always with food. I never touch spirits.

whitewave Tue 06-Feb-18 09:00:02

I generally have a glass of red evenings with my meal, but I decided to diet , I went on the nhs site and as a side I took the how much do you drink test. I drink more than 90% of women my age shock plus the calories!!!!

So I have stopped except high days and holidays and just the odd one when like others a glass goes really well with what I’m eating.

Nanawind Tue 06-Feb-18 08:59:16

We now only drink at weekend usually ? or vodka.
When we first retired we seemed to be having a bottle of wine a night. So I only buy it on Saturday morning for that night if staying in.
