I usually have one or two glasses at the weekend but rarely in the week. I do sometimes feel tempted in the week but as DH rarely drinks I don’t open a bottle for myself.

What about you.

Up to quite recently DH and I drank 1 or two glasses of wine a night, with our meal, with two nights off a week. Now we only drink at weekendsFriday and Saturday nights, yes I do misss it , but we are sticking with it. - I do have emergency supplies if needed, but so far they have been left untouched.

Oh gosh...I drink more than everyone is admitting to....hahaha Couple of glasses of red with my meal in evening or a small brandy that will last all evening sipping.

Ah, glad to note that Anniefrance and others are now being honest. don't feel such a lush.

mgtanne71 Tue 06-Feb-18 10:52:17

We have a glass most days with dinner but as I have an alcoholic daughter aged 52 I am well aware of the dangers . Never touch spirits

Dharmacat Tue 06-Feb-18 10:50:30

Well Urmstongran and Annesixty I will make it a hat trick - I have a glass of wine with my evening meal and (shock /horror) sometimes a G & T beforehand.
Living near Bordeaux in a wine region there are such excellent wines at very affordable prices and the culture over here is different. Very little binge drinking, just enjoying good wine as part of a meal.
Wonder if the tipplers like us are not posting as it now seems rather shameful to admit to having a few! As I am 75 years old and only drank the odd glass when working in the UK I hope to see a few more years yet.

Lucky you annifrance in more ways than one❗️ Go girl. ?

Craftycat Tue 06-Feb-18 10:48:59

OK fess up time!
Always share a bottle with DH on Friday, Sat & Sun evenings usually followed by a G&T or 2 ( have you tried Silent Pool gin!!??- it is amazing.)
Often have another bottle midweek but not every week.
A glass of wine if I go to theatre with friend- local theatre so not West End prices.(£10 a glass- not paying that!)
I like alcohol but it is not an addiction. When we go out to dinner I am happy to drive & not drink. We did dry January last year with no problem but I don't see the point of depriving yourself if you like it & are in control.
When GC are staying over I limit myself to one glass.
This maybe more than guidelines but I am happy with it- if DH away on business I don't drink alone- it is a social thing.

harrigran Tue 06-Feb-18 10:48:41

Hardly ever, it does not agree with my stomach. If I do have a drink it will be one particular brand of pink champagne as it gives less grief than red or white wine.

mh58 Tue 06-Feb-18 10:48:04

DH and I often open a bottle to have with our dinner. We usually leave enough for a glass each the next night. We do have a few alcohol free days each week and sometimes (not often) restrict ourselves to having wine only at the weekend.

henetha Tue 06-Feb-18 10:47:43

Wine, more than anything else, causes my acid reflux to play up badly. I never drank much anyway. I find today's alcohol habits amongst the young, and not so young, really worrying. It's the cause of an awful lot of problems.

Heather23 Tue 06-Feb-18 10:46:50

Such a mixed bag of responses. I restrict myself to one bottle of dry white a week and spread it over the week with one or two dry days. DH has a large beer or one or two large glasses of red wine five nights a week plus a G&T three evenings a week and if we have a pub lunch then it is another pint or large glass then. I berate him as I fear the longer term consequences but he wants to 'enjoy' life while he can. Mum has been a heavy drinker and has reached 93 but as she is now reliant on others, her intake has been severely curbed. There is a form of dementia caused by alcohol and given that it is full of chemicals that have an immediate effect on the brain (that's why we drink it after all) I endeavour to keep my intake to what I consider a 'safe' limit. Trouble is no-one really knows what is 'safe' - there is evidence of course of liver damage/failure and cancer linked to alcohol and dementia - all sufficient reason to steer clear of the stuff but hopefully there is a balance and we have to do what we feel is right for us. It is a slippery slope and for me it is always the first glass that I enjoy the most so why bother with a second?!

Myym Tue 06-Feb-18 10:45:22

I enjoy the taste of some alcoholic drinks but not the after affects. Due to on-going health problems and having lost a kidney (because of an accident not due to drink I hasten to add) I now only drink an occasional glass of cider or a Bacardi and coke.
Travelsafar, sorry but I don't understand your concerns regarding parents with young children. If anyone is in charge of children they shouldn't ever be full-on drunk whilst the children are in their sole care. However, I appreciate being drunk and incapable is not necessarily the same as being over the drink/drive limits, I personally would never drive even after one small glass regardless of being legally safe to do so. But should a child need taking to hospital there are ambulances in urgent care cases, friends, family or taxis so getting a child to hospital shouldn't ever be compromised in any way just because the parents have decided to have a glass of wine.

Obviously I am the lush here, at least the one who is admitting to it!

I like a couple of glasses of wine as an apero while I am preparing dinner, or a not weak G&T. I can go without during dinner, unless we are in company.

In the summer when it is hot and I am working in the gardens them I enjoy a light French beer, so refreshing.

Champagne anytime.

Last weekend was very bad, at a French friend's birthday five of us imbibed 3 bottles of champagne and 2 of red wine. Sunday was worse, I managed a whole bottle of rose for myself. I still have the headache.

However I did manage 3 days without alcohol last week. I do try for at least one day a week.

I received a very comprehensive blood test results from my doc yesterday. You will all be pleased to hear that I am enjoying extremely rude health! No cholesterol, diabetes, liver or kidney problems. So cheers and will continue to Live The Dream here in wonderful Languedoc.

Tbh I drink very little (apart from all the virtual Pernod in The Argy Bargy Bar on GN) ?
Out for a meal with friends, or a meal here or at a friends house etc then a glass of wine, and the odd G&T and that’s about it.Apart from Baileys.....which we both go at hammer and tongs at Christmas, yum.

KatyK Tue 06-Feb-18 10:43:58

No Urmstongran You're not the only one, another one here. I drink most nights. I probably drink more now than I did when I was young, when I was never a big drinker. In my defence, my life has been rather horrible (yes I know, alcohol isn't the answer). I will be 70 next year and I have
never had a day's illness in my life. I haven't had a cold, cough or anything like that for over 30 years. I am not overweight (well maybe a couple of pounds), I eat well and exercise. I have recently had extensive blood tests and all is fine. I am OK and enjoy my wine Incidentally, my mother died at 58 of a massive heart attack. She never touched alcohol or cigarettes her whole life. It was the stress of being married to a violent alcoholic that killed her. Maybe if she sat down in the evenings and relaxed with a glass or two things might have been different.

Bathsheba Tue 06-Feb-18 10:43:12

I rarely drink - even when we go out I tend to avoid it because it's usually me that's driving! I'll have a drink at Christmas, New Year, special celebratory occasions and so on, but it's not something I really think about. I'd much rather have a cup of tea grin
I keep a bottle of cheap white wine for cooking - risottos and so on - but never think of pouring a glass to drink!

sarahellenwhitney Tue 06-Feb-18 10:42:31

At present I have a couple of bottles of mulled wine, xmas gifts,. so having the odd glass now and then adding a tot of brandy which is really warming with the awful weather we are experiencing Snowing hard at present in my SW coastal location so mulled wine is a must have .
In the summer I do have a now and then glass of chilled white wine with my evening meal.

HannahLoisLuke Tue 06-Feb-18 10:40:49

One glass with Christmas lunch. That's it. Don't enjoy it and as I also suffer with reflux I don't want to make that worse.

cwasin Tue 06-Feb-18 10:40:43

If I have a night alcohol free I feel extremely virtuous. I’m with you Urmstongran. Sometimes DH will have a glass with me, sometimes he doesn’t. Im doing just grand.

Urmstongran Tue 06-Feb-18 10:40:05

Ah yes annesixty. ?. I must have missed your post! Seems like it’s just me & you then, so far! My parents both aged 86y like a daily tipple in the late afternoon before their evening meal and their GP knows. At their age they say it’s one of life’s pleasures and they have no intention of stopping. Fair play to them!

Carolyn99 Tue 06-Feb-18 10:39:37

Probably too often. Friday nights were always worth celebrating the end of a hard working week for DH and I. We did this with wine and a nice meal. Having retired over a decade ago, we keep this tradition.

Lyndie Tue 06-Feb-18 10:37:31

My husband drinks a bottle of wine every day and has done for over 30 years. He has been and still is healthy. On the other hand I drink very little. Going weeks without alcohol and have had one health problem after another during my life due to stress. The irony!

SunnySusie Tue 06-Feb-18 10:36:20

Normally one glass with Saturday meal and one glass with Sunday lunch - red wine, large glass! Dont usually drink spirits although Baileys have just brought out a dairy free version called Almande and its scrummy so that is the exception. On holiday a cold beer most days. Drank like a trooper when I was young and I have to make a big effort not to go OTT now.

Bamm Tue 06-Feb-18 10:34:55

Can't drink alcohol really as it seems to cause bad acid reflux for me and so does coffee which I miss far more !
