I usually have one or two glasses at the weekend but rarely in the week. I do sometimes feel tempted in the week but as DH rarely drinks I don’t open a bottle for myself.

What about you.

I enjoy a scotch before dinner and a glass of wine with my meal. So I'll say cheers to you all "boozers"! ?? smile Don't like drinking at lunch..Spoils my "cocktail time".. I'm nearly 74 and in good health so far.

Tipple! Spell check- I haven't started quaffing already!

Nanna58 Tue 06-Feb-18 16:02:28

Love red wine and have a couple of glasses most nights. Studies have shown that areas in the med where people have the same enjoy greater longevity than anywhere else, and that being teetotal has fewer benefits than drinking red wine. Thought I'd post as so many moderate or abstemious posts on here any others who like me enjoy stipple may think they're alone lol ???

kittylester Tue 06-Feb-18 16:02:09

teetime - I presume you mean Coke from a bottle!! grin

alcohol? I can take it or leave it, prefer to leave it

BlueBelle Tue 06-Feb-18 15:42:35

Birthdays Christmas and an odd glass now and then Not that keen hate red can tolerate white
Glass of cold cider occasionally in the summer
Can’t abide spirits or champagne or beer

M0nica Tue 06-Feb-18 15:37:18

I don't really like wine. only the occasional glass of a good sturdy red when eating a meal out. In fact I can almost say that I only consume alcohol of any kind when I am eating.

I do make a couple of bottles of sloe gin every year and that gets consumed, mainly in winter, sipped from a small glass a a night cap just before I go to bed.

It is not a matter of principle or virtue, I just do not like the taste of most alcoholic drinks and dislike the effect they can at the time it is consumed and later.

Between 3 and 5 glasses of wine a week usually - sometimes less and occasionally more. My husband rarely drinks - and never spirits.

At Christmas I like a vodka martini.

starlily106 Tue 06-Feb-18 15:26:01

Sorry, don't know what happened.
Wine, but my brute of a husband would use that as an excuse to use me as a punch bag, saying I was drunk. So I gave up having my one drink.

JaneD3 Tue 06-Feb-18 15:25:32

Urmstongran I too enjoy a drink —or two— most evenings! G&T or sherry while getting dinner and we share about 3 bottles a week. To those living in lovely France, it would just be rude not to!
The drinking guidelines were thought up as a guess - there is no evidence on which they were based.
I find that I sleep better if I drink moderately - too much keeps me awake.
Cheers wink wine

starlily106 Tue 06-Feb-18 15:22:25

I don't drink alcohol at all. When i was young I would have a glass of

Jane10 Tue 06-Feb-18 15:07:48

I usually consume a bottle of rose over a long weekend. One glass a night but usually end up tipping half of it out. I think I've just gone off alcohol. I really enjoyed several non alcoholic fruit drinks on holiday. Green apple, mint and basil was my favourite. Yummy.

Orange123 Tue 06-Feb-18 15:05:51

I hardly ever drink. Just doesn't occur to me.

In my kitchen cabinet I have several bottles of wine, some Baileys, a souvenir bottle of Limoncello from Italy, and even a bottle of Absinthe from Croatia. All were gifts and are unopened.

The only two times I take a drink are at Christmas when my DIL makes Coquito (similar to eggnog); and when I visit my daughter in Ireland we'll split a bottle of Cava while we sit up most of the night laughing and catching up on things. Oh, and once when I was visiting, I caught the flu and my SIL insisted that a glass of hot poitin was all I needed to cure my ills! LOL

Ok I'll fess up to drinking on most nights a couple of glasses of wine and perhaps a G & T first bt I am trying to have a least a couple of nights without. Don't Drink at lunch or strangely enough in hot weather!! Dehydrates me almost immediately.
Gave up Coke last year - can I have a point for that.

KatyK Tue 06-Feb-18 14:23:58

I'm not owning up to mine either PennjyH grin

We use no salt, no butter, have plain chicken most nights, eat fruit, walk, drink plenty of water and do everything the doctors have advised over the years but one place DH draws the line is his evening glass or two of red. No beer, no spirits just wine. Be rude of me to let him drink on his own ? ?

Every Friday night, lots of lovely Bacardi...
Probably nothing til the following Friday and on it goes.
I to have regular blood tests because of other things and no problems but lots of Bacardi on Friday night and I don’t look for it any other time. I enjoy a glass of red Malbec or smililar I f we are eating out but That’s s it really.

PennyH Tue 06-Feb-18 13:51:06

Apart from Dragonfly 46 you're all making feel very bad, don't think I'll own up to my drinking habits.

SueDonim Tue 06-Feb-18 13:38:34

I currently haven't had an alcoholic drink for about two weeks. I quite like a glass of wine or a cider now and then but it's not a regular feature of my life.

When we lived abroad we had a drink most nights but then we had a driver so weren't concerned about drink/driving.

Where we live now, we have no public transport and Scotland has much stricter drink/driving levels than England, so it's not worth taking a chance.

Fwiw, I feel neither up nor down and nor does eschewing alcohol make any difference to my weight, which is a bit annoying! grin

grandtanteJE65 Tue 06-Feb-18 13:34:57

Here it is considered perfectly healthy to drink a single glass of wine with a meal every day. We don't as DH has had a problem with binge drinking in the past, so we are normally completely t-total or stick to non-alcoholic beer.

If you can drink in moderation I do not think it can do you any harm.

What is necessary is to guard against one glass becoming many, but surely by our age, we all know whether we are tempted to go on drinking or not?

And we can't go through life wondering whether we would be within the legal limit if we needed to get to a hospital. If we have been drinking and an emergency arises, we will surely just need to phone for a taxi, if the situation is not grave enough to merit an ambulance?

NonnaW Tue 06-Feb-18 13:31:41

I’ll join the drinkers here. We have a vodka or G&T at the weekends, and sometimes in the week too if we fancy it. Wine the same, though we tend to keep that for the weekends. We try to have a few alcohol free days a week, but if we don’t, we won’t worry about it. As DH said the other day, it’s not as if we get legless! We enjoy it, we are healthy so why not?

Ellie Anne Tue 06-Feb-18 13:29:32

Most nights I have a whisky or a glass of wine. I’d like to have more but try not to. I’m aware I’m drinking too much but have no will power. I never drink when I have my grandchildren.

Glamdram Tue 06-Feb-18 13:29:30

WE drink wine and beer...usually if we go out every weekend.
Maybe I might have a glass or 2 on another day in the week if I go out with my girlfriends.

Maggiemaybe Tue 06-Feb-18 13:26:43

I’m always honest with my GP though, carolmary, so I’d be a bit narked if she doubled it! I do stick to the 14 units guideline in a normal week. But there are an awful lot of special weeks (holidays, birthdays, parties, celebrations) when I go over, often way over! I’d like to say it was my one indulgence, but it’s not. smile
