I never drink alcohol - I am a Salvationist. I've been surprised by the number of men (no women so far) who have turned on me and said they hate people who think they are superior because they don't drink! That's their response to my polite decline to have a glass of wine.
The real reason we in the Salvation Army don't drink is that in its beginnings a great many people the Salvationists went out to help had fallen into dire poverty and used alcohol to cope with misery and ill-health. Alcohol was cheap. This lead to addiction and a spiral down into a jobless, poverty stricken misery which affected large families living in squalor.
The S.A. Leaders realised, way ahead of medicine's findings, that it was only possible to overcome addiction to alcohol by giving it up entirely. So they said they would stop drinking so as to give courage to the poor people afflicted with alcoholism, thus demonstrating you can enjoy yourself, have a party, wedding, Christmas, etc. and celebrate without alcohol. When the ordinary members heard their leaders were giving up alcohol they said they too would do the same and thus "come alongside" the people who had the horrible experience of alcoholism and whose only cure was never to drink it.
So, far from looking down on people who drink, we Salvationists are standing beside those for whom alcohol has caused great misery to their lives. We too, as non drinkers, aim to give them hope, companionship and courage, as they go through life facing the great challenge of never drinking alcohol again.
