Are you superstitious?

No umbrellas opened in the house, spilt salt thrown over shoulder, no shoes on the table, don't walk under ladders, hang garlic over the door to keep out witches, never wear green with pink as 'pink and green are ne'er seen except on a fool', seven years bad luck for breaking a mirror, don't lay down an opened pair of scissors, don't give scissors as a present as you will 'cut the luck' of the recipient, hold your collar and touch the pavement if you see an ambulance, women should not whistle - 'a whistling woman and a crowing cock.....' can't remember the rest. Is that enough? My mum lived by all the above and making this list has made me realise that, touch wood, I am not superstitious.

yes ,about some things,never heard of the green clothes thing ,might be because we're off irish GP's and green is the national colour ..even songs about it.I do get twitchy if I haven't finished all the housework before midnight on Hogmanay in case I bring shed loads of bad luck onto us so I'm often found cleaning windows at 11'45 ..just in case

Never superstitious about anything I can think of, will happily walk under ladders see jackdaws without talking to them happily have red and white flowers wouldn’t worry about shoes on tables although it’s not something I would normally do in fact there is only one thing I can think of and I not sure it’s so much a superstition as karma I always believe if I use illness as an excuse I may be asking for trouble

Yes oopsadaisy No new shoes on the table in this house either and no crossed knives. I always throw a bit of spilt salt over my left shoulder, mutter an incantation at single magpies and won't cross people on the stairs (at home anyway).

My old landlady believed that it was unlucky to look at the new moon through glass - tricky if you wear spectacles and used to tell me off for mending an item of clothing while I was wearing it 'sewing sorrow to your soul'.

My mum was nurse and was very annoyed if anyone brought red and white flowers to the ward as she maintained it was a death of someone.

Well, Andyf, I’m not superstitious either , but as soon as a new shoe hits that table I seem to go onto autopilot and that show is on the floor before you can say boo!

henetha I was never allowed to wear green either. None of my friends have heard of that one. Istill don't wear green but I'm not superstitious about it.

My MIL won’t have Lilac blooms in her house, although she has it growing in her garden

No, not superstitious at all ( open umbrellas all the time indoors to dry them off.)
There is some sense though in not walking under ladders.

Not really, I think it's a load of old rubbish really. So why will I never walk under a ladder? Or open an umbrella idoors? I think I'm conditioned to think this way because my mother was extremely superstitious and lived her life by loads of old sayings and beliefs. To this day I can never wear green clothes as she thought green was the work of the devil.
