I wasn't sure what forum to put this on, I suppose it could be under religion, but anyway.
Do you believe mediums to be misguided, or to have any basis of truth in their 'readings'?
Do you think they prey on others' misery, or are onto a lucrative money spinner?
Have you seen one, and if you did, what conclusion did it leave you with? Lots of questions! smile

I won a sitting with Princess Di's medium,Sally something .I was going through quite a bad patch focussing on lost babies and feeling guilty that it was my faultI'd lost them( it wasn't I know that) so I entered a competition and won.I couldn't pluck up the courage to go ..in case she told me what I them already believed .I have a friend whose son inlaw tragically committed suicide and she saw her at a large venue .She was picked out of the audience and told details no one else knew about how he was found and it gave her and her D a lot od comfort when he said he was sorry he'd done it and knew he could have got through the problem that caused him to want to die

I went to a medium after my father died. He told me things he could not have guessed. I found it very reassuring. But I have been to others who have been a waste of money. I do believe that some people have the gift of sight.

Anniebach Mon 22-Jan-18 14:09:12

I would be devasted if I was told my child was sorry she had taken her life and now realised she could have got through the problems, too damn late to comfort me.

MissAdventure Mon 22-Jan-18 14:18:28

That's the thing isn't it? Telling people things holds a huge responsibility. I do know of someone who was told (years after the loss of her daughter by suicide) that she hadn't jumped, there had been a scuffle with someone else, and she fell.

I tend to the sceptical, but have known a few extraordinary things happen to others, who are normally equally sceptical.

A niece had a dog that refused absolutely to set a paw over the threshold of a certain, older part of their house. None of the family had sensed anything at all. Niece happened to have a neighbour who was said to have the 'gift'. Neighbour came (unpaid) , apparently sussed out who was still hanging around (and why), asked him to go, and he evidently went, since right afterwards the dog was perfectly happy to go into that part of the house.
If dogs can imagine such things, I have to say it's news to me.

Intrigued by this, normally sceptical niece gave the same neighbour a ring that had been recently left to her by an elderly great aunt who'd lived hundreds of miles away. The things she was told about the great aunt, which she could not possibly have known, were quite extraordinary, and I have to say, sent shivers up the back of my neck when I was told of them.

I had a reading many years ago and she was able to tell me how many children I had and also the medical problems my daughter had. She predicted I would marry but not the person I was seeing who had a name beginning with R as my future husbands name began with M. Two years later I took my friends to see her as she believed she had brain tumour and nothing could convince her she didn’t. She came away knowing that she didn’t have one and has never had a bad headache again.. just a load of nonsense, maybe, but there again you just never know.

KazzaK Mon 22-Jan-18 15:18:33

I have a very good friend who is psychic. She is an extremely kind, level headed person. Does not take any money for readings so no financial gain. It’s something she has been able to do since childhood so she just accepts it as a gift that she has. Some of my family have met with her and she has told them things she couldn’t possibly have known. My husband was completely cynical about all this (something my friend took all in good part) until something happened to him while he was alone working in her house which changed his mind completely. So yes, while I agree there are people out there who are con artists, there are people who are genuine.

Depends. No doubt there are awful charlatons who prey on the vulnerable but there are good ones too.
This is my experience:
One of DH's workmates went to a good 'un in Newark. She held his watch, rubbed it and said , "Please take your car to the garage, I know nothing about cars but I'm urging you to do so. You will, won't you? I've got a bad feeling."
He thought to himself 'What a load of rubbish' but went anyway (he didn't say to the mechanic that a medium told him to come as he didn't want to look daft.
Later on he got a phone call from the garage.
"I'm so glad you brought the car in, the brake cable was almost sheared right through and could've failed at any time - you were driving a death trap."
As you can imagine, the hairs on the back of his neck stood out. He recommended her to us. We went twice and she was fabulous - told us things which she couldn't possibly have known - about our departed parents and suchlike. It was uncanny, so yes I believe in this sort of thing - as long as you go to a good'un.

I went to a clairvoyant with a crowd from work. She told me someone close to me was getting married within the year, I said yes close friend and I was going to be a bridesmaid. She said I wasn't going to be a bridesmaid and the wedding would happen overseas. I said no it was all booked in this country and I was going to be bridesmaid.

Couple of months later friends boyfriend got called up for national service in his country and my friend flew out and married him. So I didn't get to be bridesmaid and the wedding didn't happen here. I have no clue how she worked it all out.

This is what I sort of believe, but it will be a bit daft sounding to most people. I have thought this since coming across Philip Pullman's Dark Matters trilogy and watching film The Golden Compass . Bear with me as it gets a bit deep.

In Physics basically everything in the universe is made up of particles, but particle is a general term for something that varies massively to form the world around us and beyond. Humans are made from particles and are sentient beings, and particles make this possible. Our consciousness exists because of the relationship between particles.

So my thoughts are that when we die, no matter what happens to our bodies, whether we're cremated or buried in the ground or at sea, etc., our particles are broken down and separate. I think it's possible that particles from our existence can be sensed by some people and those particles retain something of the whole being. This could also be described as a soul, spiritual and/or religious.

I know this is a subject discussed by philosophers for thousands of years, but I think science is answering some of the questions and will continue to do so.

Esspee Mon 22-Jan-18 19:12:57

James Randi offered a prize of one million dollars to anyone who could demonstrate supernatural ability under scientific testing criteria. Nobody managed to pass the preliminary tests despite the offer remaining open for many years.

Eglantine21 Mon 22-Jan-18 19:13:09

Wilma you might want to Google "You need a physisist at your funeral". I would post a link if I knew how but basically it's the scientific stance on what you have just posted.
A physisist will tell you that matter cannot be created or destroyed so somewhere out there are all the particles which were someone you knew and loved. Reconfigured throughout eternity but never destroyed. They can't be.
I can hang a belief on this smile

WilmaKnickersfit Mon 22-Jan-18 19:44:39

Eglantine I knew there were scientific and philosophical discussions and theories, but I recently read there's a new Philip Pullman trilogy dealing with the subject of 'dust' and it reminded me. It's why I keep an open mind about the paranormal. smile

WilmaKnickersfit Mon 22-Jan-18 19:55:07

Esspee I've seen James Randi speak quite often online and it's a shame the $1 million challenge stopped in 2015, the year he stepped down.

Anniebach Mon 22-Jan-18 20:37:08

Wilma, doesn't explain how someone told of a death before it happen, the dead person a stranger to the person who found the body , over a week before the person died ?

MawBroon Mon 22-Jan-18 23:38:16

I don’t think you can say The Book of Dust is a new trilogy Wilma etc, but a prequel to the first book of his fantasist trilogy, His Dark Materials,Northern Lights being the first book.

WilmaKnickersfit Mon 22-Jan-18 23:52:55

Maw the description I read said it was the first book in a new trilogy and is a companion to the His Dark Matters trilogy. He describes it as an 'equel' and not a prequel or a sequel.

I can't remember where I read the article about it, but this is the Wikipedia page

The Book of Dust

lemongrove Mon 22-Jan-18 23:53:02

I don’t think there is any value in being told things about somebody we knew or about ourselves either, but if about an event about to happen or a warning of danger that would be different.
I think most are charlatans sadly, but that there are ‘sensitive’ people who do pick up things.
I would stay away from mediums though as I have never met a happy one.wink

I tend to the sceptical, but have known a few extraordinary things happen to others, who are normally equally sceptical.

Same here Witzend, so I don't dismiss them. I do believe some cash in and have no qualms about doing it.

I have had one or two experiences that lead me to believe there is more to life and death than we will ever know. Because of one incredible and moving experience I now believe we are all souls having a human experience. There is more, but whether others can tap into it or not I still question.

WilmaKnickersfit Tue 23-Jan-18 00:05:43

No, it doesn't Annie. My thoughts on that are again to do with our brains and that some people have brains that enable them to do things like see into the future. I can't explain how some people can do certain things like this, but I am willing to keep an open mind about it all.

I do think the majority of people who say they can do these things are charlatans. I saw a programme last year that exposed many of the ways stage acts work and unfortunately advancements in technology make faking it easier than ever.

On the other hand I also suspect that many people who do have these extra abilities do not make it known and it's probably a burden to them.

Day6 Tue 23-Jan-18 00:07:24

Oh lemon grin grin grin Groan.

If I went into business I'd have to call myself the Happy Medium now. Your fault! grin

Coolgran65 Tue 23-Jan-18 00:10:38

I visited a lady and as she spoke her friend wrote down what she said.
Straight off she said to me.... Fred is telling me he loves you, Sara is with him. Fred is a lovely man but Sara is a cold fish and really a difficult person. Are these your parents.
And yes, they were my parents.

She said I had several children but only one born to me who lived many thousands of miles away.
Yes, I have one dc and 4 step children.

WilmaKnickersfit Tue 23-Jan-18 00:13:20

I often think when this kind of subject crops up that perhaps we all have these extra abilities, but for some reason they're more active in certain people. I remember years ago someone who was supposed to have developed some paranormal ability after surviving a lightening strike. I can see that being true because our brains work on electrical impulses.

MissAdventure Tue 23-Jan-18 00:18:37

I think we all have certain abilities which aren't used in our day to day life. Even if its just the ability to draw people out of themselves. The woman I saw approached everything she told me from a variety of angles until she hit on the right one. Once she had established that I don't drink, am not looking for a man, and am genuinely happy to stay home then she went down that route. She'd exhausted all the others!

WilmaKnickersfit Tue 23-Jan-18 00:19:57

lemongrove I was slow there and completely missed the joke! grin

Coolgran what did you think afterwards? That would have freaked me out and I would spend a lot of time trying to work out how she could have found out the information!
