If it's in or near your boiler cupboard have you a carbon monoxide detector it might be that.

Farview, thanks, yes I did check the display panel and all seemed well. Fingers crossed we haven't heard any more strange noises, fingers crossed.

have you checked the boiler pressure?

Thank you all. At the moment all is quiet, battery run down? We didn't discover what was making the noise, but searched high and low. It seemed to be coming from the area around the cupboard where the boiler is sited. But it is still a mystery. Just hope it doesn't come back.

Carbon monoxide detector?

Indeed - something has run out of battery. I know how annoying it is traipsing about the house trying to find which one it is! The noise does not happen where you are standing!

Smoke alarms usually pip quite loudly when they run down
As it’s muted could it be coming from next door provided you have a next door of course

Yes, sounds just like smoke alarm battery.

DH says " Could it be a battery running out in something ?

This afternoon, from roughly 1pm, we have heard what sounds like a muted phone ring. It is not our house phones and both our mobiles are turned off. It rings just twice, then nothing, until approx 1 hour later, it happens again. Any suggestions. And, no, this is not a wind up!.
