I can remember playing with a box of matches! Well, actually, I was licking the part that you strike the matches on, and it was making me dribble brown drool. I got a smack for that one!

I still can't put lipstick on without making a mess.

Nelliemoser Sun 21-Jan-18 22:52:13

I think I was at the doctors and standing my his desk and he gave me some little bottles to play with.
The other one was sitting in the back room trying to put on my mums lipstick I had found and then saw the window cleaner looking at me through the window and laughing.

My 1st birthday, I had a cake with one candle (naturally) and I remember my brother, who's 13 months older, showing me how to stick my finger in the icing, scoop it up and eat it. smile I've got loads of memories of the 2 of us playing together, as we didn't go to nursery school, but I'm pretty sure that one is the earliest. Happy days!

Kensington gardens...my brother was one, I was two and my sister was three. It was raining and we were all cosy in our large grey pram while my mother pushed us all the way home. We are still just as close today.

About 4years dad taking me on front of his bike to have my tonsils out. It was at a convent. Still remember dad saying goodbye see you soon and the big wooden double doors clanging shut. Then being taken down a corridor by a nun in full regalia. Scary. Best bit the jelly and ice cream after and dad coming to get me.

I remember being 4 and about to start school. I was so worried sitting on the doorstep.

I can remember my Mum going into hospital to have my younger sister who is almost 4 years older than me. I cried and my auntie came and read me a story then my other auntie came so I cried some more and got another story. All of my other early memories include my younger sister so I must have been about 5 by then. I remember my first day at school as one girl wet her knickers and we all laughed at her and the teacher shouted at us

I remember my mother leaving me in my pushchair outside someone's house while she went inside. I wriggled about trying to get out and the pushchair started to run down the street (which was very steep). At the bottom was a road which was flat, the pushchair tipped over and i was left dangling inside. Just as well because if the pushchair hadn't tipped it would have carried on down another steep slope and ended up on the main road. I can remember being so scared, i wet myself. My mother came racing down the street screaming. She had forgotten to put the brake on the pushchair, had just twisted it a bit so the wheel was against the wall, and i had wriggled it free. She slapped my leg for being naughty.

I remember having a tantrum at a photographers, he gave me a foam bendy rabbit to hold, obviously a prop but I thought it was mine to keep! Cue almighty tantrum when I had to give it back! Was about 3
Did anyone else have 'sunray treatment'? Sitting on a bench in your knickers in front of bright lights - because I was skinny & wouldn't eat! My cousin had it as well, we both reckoned it kicked in when we turned 40!

Some of my earliest memories concern bodily functions - enough said....!

MissAdventure Sun 21-Jan-18 15:22:39

A lot of first memories seem to be tied in with unpleasant experiences. I wonder why that is? I suppose we'd always felt loved and secure and content, and suddenly fear shows up..

Treading on a drawing pin with bare feet. I was about 2 and a half.

Polly Perkins - sorry, my last post was a reply to you! It looks now as if I o lay had one birthday card!

I remember being in the pram at the local carnival procession and a clown kept looking at me and I was screaming hated clowns ever since. I also used to have a recurrent dream of being on a coach and it started going over a cliff, Mum told me later that this happened when I was about one, we had gone on a day trip the driver went the wrong way tried to turn and the front wheels started to go over, we had to get out one at a time.

Elrel Sun 21-Jan-18 14:47:07

I only had one and didn't realise until now either that there was a series or that Enid Blyton wrote them! I just remember holding a tiny book with a sweet little mouse in it!
Enid Blyton, a few years later I had Sunny Stories each week and I still, embarrassingly, sometimes find I've written E as in her signature. I thought her daughters must be the luckiest girls in the world and was shocked when I discovered this wasn't the case!

pollyperkins Sun 21-Jan-18 14:14:15

I have a very vague memory of someone(an old lady?!) bending over my pram and being afraid she was going to climb in!
However my first real memory was of sitting on the floor looking at my birthday cards. I think I was just 3.

I remember visiting our new house while it was still being built and getting upset about there being nowhere for me to sit down. My dad made me a little seat out two bricks and a plank of wood resting on top! I was two.

pollyperkins Sun 21-Jan-18 14:04:29

Elrel I havent read the whole thread but had to put straightaway that the Mary Mouse books were a great favourite with me. The books also featured mummy Doll, Sailor doll (her husband ) and their 3 children Melia Pip and Roundy. I think MM had a husband and baby mice too. I remember some of the stories. I think they were by Enid Blyton. There was usually a moral at the end of the story!

I remember my Dad lifting me up to the window of the nursing home to see my new baby brother in the nursery. The nursery had about 12 cream cane Moses baskets. I also remember the nurse who had a flowing white head dress handing him to my Mum who was in the front seat. I remember the position of the pram in our back garden but I was too small to see into the pram. I was 3.5 at the time

threexnanny Sun 21-Jan-18 13:43:05

I think I can remember being in my pram and the family cat jumped up to join me till mum found her and I was draped in net afterwards. Definately can remember standing up in my cot and looking across my parents bed to the open door - about 2 I think. Next was getting the measles and listening to Children's Hour on the radio aged about 3.
Then there was my grandmother moving in with us when I was 4. I was fascinated by all her stuff and kept getting in the way.
I can also remember toddling out to the garden and pulling the heads off a lot of flowers because they were pretty!

SueDoku Sun 21-Jan-18 13:38:56

I remember being in my big Silver Cross pram outside a shop on our High Street (Mum had left me outside - as was usual then - and was inside buying something) and hearing an awful noise that frightened me very much. I looked over the road and saw a man in full Highland dress, playing the bagpipes - and screamed my head off ?
I know that I was under two, because just before my second birthday, Mum had left me outside a wool shop and heard a commotion - running out, she found that I'd bounced so hard that I'd managed to turn the whole pram over..! ? That was the end of the pram and the start of the pushchair..!! ?

gillyknits Sun 21-Jan-18 13:32:43

I remember my Dad seeing me across the road to get his paper. I must have only been two. At that time I also remember my sister, who was two year older than me , feeding me a sandwich made of pepper and mustard! Don’t think she liked me much.

I remember making jam tarts in infant school . I was 4. Before that I have two memories in my grandmothers garden when I as smaller. One is eating an icecream and the dog jumped up at me and knocked the icecream out of the cornet onto the floor, I remember crying because having an icecream was a rare treat. The other memory is of my uncle strangling one of the hens for my auntie to pluck it for tea. My father was there and I remember him shouting at my uncle ( his brother) because he did it in front of me and I was traumatised.
