Bearing in mind we are all in our fifties or older, and few of us look like Madame Macron, I am surprised at the level of cattiness on here. How many of us would look good pulled outside during a busy day in the office?
If she did look perfectly groomed at all times, then there would be a string of complaints about her being high maintenance and the cost of her clothes.

I didn't say that Angela Merkel was a style icon, just that she always looks good. And she does. I made several provisos, but she is always well turned out. She knows what suits her and sticks to it.

lemongrove I wouldn't use the word frumpy, but their hair style is a bit dated. Sturgeon in particular always looks immaculate and wears fabulous shoes. However, they both wear their personal style like a uniform which means people always know who is in charge.

Angela Merkel - full colour palette!

Nicola S always looks good, but then she is only in her mid 40s. A few more years down the line and she might not be able to step out quite so cheerily in those lovely shoes. Not that I'm speaking from experience or anything....

I can't agree with you about Frau Merkel looking good, Wilma, but at least she doesn't shy away from a bit of colour!

I think her decision to stick to similar jackets in different colours is kind of mannish. I don't mean that disparagingly. It's really quite wise. She certainly can't be criticised for distracting anyone with changes of attire. Merkel means business is what it says, like a man's business suit.

I think Sturgeon has also developed her own style. And it's fine on her.

Then there was Mrs Thatcher hair.... In her case it was her voice that drove me to distraction: I couldn't bear it!

Baggs I agree with you about Merkel and that's my point. Her clothes are not a distraction. I can only think of one time when I've thought "What was she thinking?" and that was back in 2008 when she attended the opera in Norway. The photos show her gown which looked fine until she sat down. I'm sure many will have thought "Good boobs!" though!

I thought that dress of Theresa May was hideous and badly fitting. I knew there would be a thread on here or mumsnet about it.
She is one month younger than me and I would have been disappointed to look at a photo of myself wearing that badly fitting dress.

During the election campaign the year after that photo was taken, one of the CDU candidates got into trouble for using the photo on campaign posters with the phrase "We have more to offer"!

I found the same thing for Nicola Sturgeon and somebody else earlier. It must be a 'thing' with newspapers.

I wish Theresa May would wear her skirts a bit longer. Showing her knees does her no favours, it just make her legs look even more skinny and flamingo like. Merkel has opted for wearing a uniform. It's what she wears to work to show she's in charge and because only the colour of the jacket changes she escapes all the "My God what's she wearing now?" comments.

I know it's sad of me but I am fascinated by Mays evolving make up; have noticed she is now wearing warmer foundation and a toned down lipstick. I'm sure it signifies something [although I'm never quite sure what ]. It's also sad of me to imagine just how fat Trump is under his very expensive suits [no; amend that; I do NOT want to imagine..oh heck..it's in my head now; yuk]...

Merkel wears her clothes rather than letting them wear her. She obviously has decided what looks suitable for the job she does, ie the same suit in every colour, and sticks with it. No wondering what to wear each morning, apart from colour.
