Do you?
How do you?
We do, on our own at home.
The first new year party I went to with dh, about a week after we met, was thrown by his senior partner and was an excruciating experience. Having to kiss, and be kissed by loads of people I didn't know and rarely, if ever, saw again.
Luckily, we both felt the same and have only done family New Year Parties since.
Tonight we will have a nice meal, nice wine, celebrate that we made it to the end of the year and look forward to the next.

DGS here tonight, just came downstairs, DD and SIL going to an 'event', they went to similar last year got fed up and my door opened at 11.45 to them with a bottle of Champagne.
I am invited out and could take DGS but i really cannot be bothered.
Also Scottish so the big clean has been done, except for scrubbing out the bathroom which I will do after DGS and I have showers. Quite funny really as DD has SIL polishing away upstairs and cleaning out cupboards etc. He says Scottish is "catching".
Have a good new year everyone and thanks for all the support over the years I have been on Gransnet.
Memories of Hogmanay and Ne’rday as a child in the 50s were travelling to visit my mums sister, only after our house was cleaned from top to bottom, including cleaning out drawers etc., and making sure all the bills were paid. When we got to my aunts, copious amounts of ginger wine (and maybe a wee dram for the men only) was drunk, and we bairns were sometimes allowed to stay up for “The Bells”. On New Year’s Day my mother took me every year to a performance of The Messiah in Glasgow at midday. It lasted nearly 3 hours, and we took a flask of tea and sandwiches for the interval. Then back to my aunts for the Big Meal of the year....more so than Christmas. And sometimes we got presents for our Nee’rday.
What a lovely idea SallyCollings to write on pebbles of things you want to let go of. I think I might try this.
To all Gransnetters on their own this New Years Eve, look to the future and make plans to keep. HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone.
What is Nee'rday, please? I've never heard of that term before.
I have always loved New Years Eve. As children our parents held a big party on Christmas Day. Boxing Day was a family party held by an aunt and uncle. New Years Eve was another big event at a friends house.
As a parent we always held big parties on New Years Eve, mainly for the children.
This year we are going to a Bollywood Night held at our local Indian restaurant.
Then at midnight we have to eat twelve grapes, one on each chime. It is a Spanish tradition.
But our festivities are far from over we still have The Three Kings on January 6th.
Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2018.
We’re not party people but we see the new year in with Jools Holland on the TV and a couple of glasses of something nice in hand. We stagger off to bed around about 1.30 feeling fairly cheerful and optimistic about what’s to come. I can’t think of a better way to begin a new year.
MissAdventure, it is New Years Day in Scotland, Hogmany is New Years Eve.
Oh thank you. Something else I've learned.
Just arrived in rainy Kent. Sitting with mug of tea by a log fire. Later I can ply the bellows and the poker as in days of yore! I’ve told a GS that I’m available for (simple!!) board games for the duration, he looked pleased.
D and SiL in the kitchen, fragrant spices and rosemary emanate. I’m looking forward to a lovely meal and a glass or three of celebratory bubbles.
Then I begin, for the third time, to drink only tap water for the month of January for WATERAID. Please consider joining me, you soon become accustomed to it. I cannot imagine having no lavatory in a community, or walking miles for water which may be dirty or toxic but is all I can offer my family. 2018 - can we make it a slightly better world for those less fortunate than ourselves?
Happy New Year! ?

Happy New Year! ?
I have never celebrated New Years Eve, it's a normal day for us and we shall be tucked up in a warm bed 11 ish. Bliss
Just had roast chicken dinner Xmas pud mince pies and cream, followed by coffee and wine.
Watching top of the pops with gd. Got last two episodes of Joan and Bette to watch and whatever rubbish is on tele.
Watch neighbours fireworks from our living room window
My lack of enthusiasm for NYE and NYD never went down too well with my late husband, a Northumbrian born, bred and raised. My parents never made much of it, other than my dad being pushed outside at 11.59pm and, having visited the coal shed, coming back in with some coal and kissing us all. Here in Northumberland, maybe forty years ago, parties and first footing were very big but it doesn't seem as popular these days. Being your own first foot was considered unlucky. As a child, I remember visiting my grandparents in Liverpool and being in bed but awake at midnight listening to the tugboats on the Mersey blowing their hooters to welcome the new year.
This year my eldest son will be here but he might go down to the pub for the evening. I'll watch TV, have a glass of something and see the new year in, probably alone. That's fine. If my son is out, I might wait for him to get back but likely I'll go to bed soon after midnight.
Happy New Year to all GNers xxx
Best foot forward in 2018! xxxxxx
Well with a 3 month old puppy we won’t be going out. Mind you last NYE OH and I both fell asleep by midnight. Probably the same this year.
I shall open a bottle of Prosecco anyway but as I have to be up at 8 to let pup out won’t be staying up much later than midnight if I do stay awake!
We have gone to DS' s in recent years as they have our DGS, & his in laws have come along too and we've played a murder mystery, complete with dressing up. This year, we're actually going to a party, dress code smart casual. My dearest friend married this year for the first time at the age of 60 years and one day so she & her lovely new husband are hosting a do. Really looking forward to it ?
Over the last 56 years we have hosted parties, gone to parties in others' homes or in Messes or clubs and generally done the celebration thing but this year, I think for the first time, we are home alone and will be watching tv, toasting each other and probably going to bed before midnight! Phone calls to family and friends tomorrow before going to a New Year's Day open house at friends.
Happy new year to all.
DH is working tomorrow and has to be up at 4.30 so it's bed tonight early for us here. Xxx
Quiet night in watching tv and snoozing off and on. Hoping for a happy and peaceful new year for us all. Xx
I've got my son here but he'll either be on his Xbox or in bed!! Carers coming in at 8.50pm to put me to bed (have MS and can't walk) so I'll be watching Jools and hoping next year will be better than this one!!
???Happy New Year to all on Gransnet, you certainly brighten my day. ???
I am on my own for NYE for the first time . DH died nearly 4 years ago; spent first 2 NYs on a coach holiday; the first was excellent, everyone friendly and inclusive, the second, I was the only solo traveller in the party. Last year a friend came to stay for a few days, it was hard work. So this year I had my main meal at lunchtime, have had a relaxing bath, done my nails and am going to heat up some canapes to have with my little bottle of cava. Many of us have spent our lives putting everyone else first; I felt quite guilty, planning my evening, but now feel quite relaxed and cheery. It helps that I went to a couple of drinks parties while staying with DD at Christmas; standing around making small talk with a drink in one hand, canapé in the other, was not much fun. I send everyone warm wishes for 2018, and a hug for everyone on their own.
Reading of so many of you being on your own makes me realise I am so lucky to have DH. We don't go out these NYEs, too much forced bonhomie and waiting for the bells to strike before you have to sing and kiss strangers - not for us anymore! Would love to have close friends to share with (as we used to when younger) but now it's on with the woodburner, a glass of something chilled, watching The Crown on DVD and if we can stay awake, we'll watch the fireworks from Westminster and whilst they are an amazing spectacle will be thinking of the better things that all that money could be spent on - not least the homeless and victims of Grenfell Tower. Happy New Year one and all
We had friends to stay for quite a few years on NYE, but broke with that tradition a couple of years ago. As the years rolled by I found it all too much like hard work so soon after Christmas having to stock up on everything again and cook another meal. The last couple of years we have celebrated with friends in a restaurant. We have been out to lunch today but I am not feeling that well have developed a sore throat and cold, quite looking forward to an early night with a book
Hope everyone else's NYE goes well and a Happy and Healthy New Year to all.
We will do what we have always done for the last 25 years, a few drinks and supper with our 6 close friends and neighbours. We take it in turns to host. It used to be an all nighter, now we are getting older and no longer have the stamina, so it will be bed at about 1am.
Happy New year to All.
