Dealing with my Husband's death

My DH died on Christmas eve. Forgive me for writing this down but I feel I'm going to burst. We were going to his daughters funeral, but he had a mini stroke they think, the next day he had a brainstem infarction rendering him with locked in syndrome. He knew what was going on but could only move his eyes. He then died on Sunday morning. I feel I'm living in a bad dream. I have a loving family and friends, and as for the Hotels I stayed in and the Hospital, people went above and beyond. But I'm feeling so alone.

So very sorry for your loss, deepest condolences.

Sincerest condolences, and I only wish I knew what to say to ease your pain, but there are no magic words to end your suffering. This is the thing we all dread, losing our life partner, and every couple knows that some day, one will be left to cope with bereavement.
Take one day at a time, be kind to yourself, accept all offers of support from friends and family. They say time heals all wounds and it will get easier, though it's hard to believe that now. Talk to other widows as they will understand what you are going through, and they will assure you that there is light at the end of the tunnel, but it will take time. God bless you.

I can’t imagine how devestated you feel. I do hope you find some comfort. I am sorry.

I can only imagine how you are feeling right now grannyjilly. The shock is still raw, so just do what feels right for you. There will be things to do that will help the hours pass at this difficult time. Is there a family member that could stay with you for a few days? Just having another person there might help. There's no need to talk if you don't want to. One day at a time. flowers

Maw I often think of you. What a kind, helpful and thoughtful post you have written to grannygilly.

MawBroon Thu 28-Dec-17 23:57:05

Dear Grannyjilly my sincerest sympathy. I can only say that in the six weeks since my darling paw (DH) slipped away, I have felt depths of emotion I did not know I had. Grief, loneliness, hurt, anger at the unfairness of it all, guilt (did I say I love you enough?) resentment of other healthy couples, the list goes on.
People ask how you are and there is no adequate answer.
You are understandably still in shock and your emotions will be very raw. Wiser heads than I have helped to guide me but even after 6 weeks it is early days for me, so for you after just 4 days the pain is hard to imagine.
Do accept any and all offers of help, especially with the “business”side of registering the death, arranging the funeral etc. And take your time wherever possible, apart from getting the death certificate (and get at least 5, you will need to send them all over the place) there is no urgency with the other things. Involve your family if they are near or a good friend. I found everybody very helpful and kind and it helped me to arrange a funeral which involved all the family and reflected Paw’s life and faith. That gave me something to focus on.
But yes, the feeling alone and stunned, the sleepless nights, the fear of going out, the tears which wash over you, possibly even panic attacks.
I do feel for you.
Feel free to PM me if you wish but there are quite a few of us who have recently suffered bereavements on GN and I think everybody is different and every reaction is the right one for them flowers

I am so sorry Grannyjilly, the worst thing imaginable. I feel I can understand a bit of how you feel, just numb, as similar happened to me. I still really can't believe it even although it happen a few years ago. I found just trying to cope with a day at a time and not thinking about the big picture was perhaps the best way. It certainly took time to try to come to terms with the worst day of my life. If there is anything I could reassure you with please just get in touch. Thinking about you at this difficult time. flowers

So, so sad to hear this. A double blow. The only thing to do is take an hour or two at a time. I do hope you have happy memories to take out of the memory bank and you had a few hours to say your goodbyes. Let people help you, they will want to. Keep posting here. There are some lovely people with wise words.
