Someone told me the other day that my sister was clever.
Who's Controlling The Straits of Hormuz?
Around 1955 (I was about 9 or 10) the boys in my road reluctantly accepted me into their males only Street gang. When I was the last to jump back off the railway line as the steamtrain approached, the gang leader said "Gosh, Ju! You're ALMOST as good as a boy!" I've since had my share of positive comments about my looks or character but, strange as it it seems, that was the one I best remember. What unusual compliments do YOU recall?
Someone told me the other day that my sister was clever.
About 4 years ago, parked car in Tesco's & walking towards the shop ..... Man rushes over to me
"Excuse me, I just wanted to tell you how lovely you look". My mind went blank as I looked around for the hidden "candid cameras" filming this weird encounter. My mouth opened and all I uttered was "WHAT?"
He then said "I like to make someone feel good about themselves each day".
Stuttering now, I gave him a quick "thank you, enjoy your day too". I shall never know if it was a compliment or a joke. He looked sane, he was polite, etc but I've always thought "how weird". I decided he was crazy but he definitely made me feel good that day ?
A big group of us were sitting in the pub one evening and one of our friends said completely out of nowhere, "Sue always looks clean!" Another friend was watching a programme about cosmetic surgery and her husband said, 'If you ever want it done I'll support you.' She was not pleased. ?
Humbertbear My mother is good at that too. She once said 'well I think you have a pretty face' with great emphasis on the 'I' as if she disagreed with the general consensus.
I was also once told in a nightclub that I was relatively attractive (by someone who wasn't exactly hot himself - which I wasn't quick thinking or confident enough to point out).
Similar to yours, giulia. I'm female and, when I went out one night with a female friend, A man I know was out with friends and he spotted me as I walked past his group. His comment was, "This is Denise. She's one of the lads." I still feel proud over that comment.
My daughter looked at me and said: 'You know you could really do with a
complete facelift and then maybe no-one would notice you're fat". And there I was thinking I was looking pretty good for my age!! Silly me!
Last time i had my smear test the nurse informed me that I had great pelvic floor muscles. I left the surgery feeling flattered and very delighted with myself. But I realised a short while later that years ago it would have taken a compliment from a good looking young man to delight me in the same way! I guess my expectations have dropped as my age has risen.
My mother used to tell me a neighbour peered in the pram to see me as a baby and managed by way of remark it’s got a good shaped head”.
Remember 'autograph' books? I must have been about eight years old when my teacher wrote in mine. " Be good sweet child and let who will be clever."
Best compliment ever....I think ... was when I first moved to a new job in a new town.My husband of two years had stayed behind in our last home to ‘tie things up’ and I was staying with his parents. When I had been at my new job 2 days a lovely, elderly man I worked with said to me , “ you’re lovely, and you have ‘come to bed eyes’...I’d never heard the expression before and I thought it a grand saying. When I told my my husband later he said the old fella was trying to ‘pull me’. But you know he wasn’t , we worked together for a couple of years and he was always courteous and correct with me. His name was George and Ive never forgotten it. Also it’s nicer than anything my husband has EVER said to me.!! Says a lot.
When I was about 19. On the tube in London the Irish guy sitting across from us told me “You’re a flower. You’re no rose, but you’re a flower.” ?
I had been to the hairdressers and afterwards went shopping
A lady stopped me and said how nice my hair looked after she went off I thought really great and then I tripped up on the pavement and nearly went over.
And another DH special. He helped down a vivacious divorcee from our coach steps with the words "Oh, Diane, you look lovely tonight". Catching sight of me glowering behind her, he swiftly added "You look very nice as well".
An Italian family friend commented on my Facebook photo "you are beautiful." Flattered, I modestly responded "oh, I'm getting old now!" He then ruined the whole thing by observing "beautiful is a good heart, not a pretty face." Deflated!
On a romantic dinner in Paris, from DH: "This candlelight.....doesn't half make your spots stand out".
"You've got a fine pair of footballer's legs" and "You'll pass in a crowd", both from my parents.
My mother has a way of telling me I look nice that implies that she is very surprised at my appearance.
A couple of weeks ago I was behind a stall at our church bazaar. An elderly lady came up to me and said "Hello dear. You're a lot slimmer than you used to be aren't you?" I am the same weight I have always been for years. ?
Last year my brother-in-law who hadn't seen me since I had a shorter haircut (and my hair was definitely more white than blonde), commented that I looked more and more like my mother every year. When I replied that I couldn't really see it, he looked surprised and said: 'But she wasn't a bad looking woman'!
I worked with a woman who was always coming out with-do you remember that sports presenter "Coleman balls?" Well her sayings were known as "(name) balls. . .
One day, while a few of us were making (a very quick drink-private practice, no time wasting!) she commented on my hair cut-she hadn't wanted "straggly bits" like I'd had! Colleagues-and me-just snorted. She never got it! Another time I admired a skirt she had-she had lovely taste-it's M&S Newquay, you couldn't afford it! See her in playground now collecting GC, she hasn't changed a bit. . .
When I was about 30, I was walking down a corridor at work, when one of my male colleagues that I didn't know that well, stopped me and said, quite seriously, "You look really lovely today..." I blushed and started to thank him but before I could say very much he added, "because you don't always, you know. Oh no. Sometimes you look very pasty..." I didn't know whether to laugh or cry! PASTY!!!!
I was kicking a ball around with my grandson when another boy of similar age, came and asked if he could join in. I think he thought at that point, I would butt out. No chance! After, he said to me “I’ve never seen an old lady play football before - you’re good!” GS gave me a high five!
I once said to my mother, all dressed up for some smart day event.
'You look awful, just like something out of Vogue'
An elderly lady looked admiringly at my very cute twin girls, about 9 months old at the time, saying “ your babies are so pretty,” ...pause while she studied my face closely....”they’re not a bit like you are they!”
Just what a harassed and sleep deprived mum needed to hear!
As teenagers, my best friends brother said "I'm so drunk Hipsy,I could almost fancy you"
I was helping a friend who had laid on a buffet for her mother's wake. My hands were in the washing up bowl when this cousin of said friend remarked, 'I'd help too but I'm all dressed up...'
