Feeling guilty about an unnecessary and extravagant purchase

Nothing wrong with the occasional splurge. It took me a long time to not feel guilty about treating myself and I still feel the odd twinge - but there is no one to tell you off but yourself and you know nothing bad is going to happen. You helped create a job for the person who sold it to you, the person who made it, the person who grew the cotton and the person who delivered it to the store. I don't like excessive commercialism and we have to have less waste - but your sheets are a necessity and now your's will last longer because they will each get less wear. Just enjoy them.

Nice bedding is one of life’s great pleasures and not really so very expensive when you compare it to other indulgences. I am not well off, but always budget for beautiful linens and get so much pleasure from them. I probably do have more than I need - make that definitely - but I have never regretted it.
One little thing, and I feel rather mean and horrid saying this, I occasionally have guests who are not particular about their personal cleanliness. I am very fond of them, but try as I might, I can’t bring myself to put my best, beautiful bedding on when they stay. The thought of grubby feet on my Egyptian cotton sheets is just more than I can bear. They have to make do with the ordinary stuff, which is still perfectly nice. There - I feel ashamed now, but what’s a girl to do? ?

You could probably just drink tap water, wash everything by hand and holiday in the garden. Whats wrong with decent bedding? Or a decent bed/mattress come to that. Sounds like a good way to spend your own hard earned money.

I agree was a gift for the house Chewbacca
and sounds like you must have worked exceptionally hard throughout the year.
Previously I would have put money towards a trip or holiday, now it's grandchildren all the way
And then some lovely towels or bedding .
Decorating in the new year so have planned a trip to the sales for just that.

Unless the guilt is part of the pleasure of buying your treat, ditch it.

You didn't spend money on your bed linen that would otherwise have fed your starving children or bought them desperately needed medication or shoes. You received a bonus and frittered some of it, and from the sound of it, not very much, relatively. on a treat for yourself. You earned it.

Enjoy the treat and ditch the guilt.

Of course you shouldn't feel guilty - your hard-earned bonus, your choice, and spend it on what gives you pleasure. But this thread has made me think about my own bedding, probably for the first time! I've only two sets for our bed - one of them we bought second hand when the kids were young and we were skint, the other plain white and not exactly high end either. It's probably the last thing I'd spend money on. I do always like it to be fresh and clean, though, and I appreciate a good mattress and duvet.

That’s not at all excessive. Try dividing the cost by 52 and then tell yourself you’re are worth at least that much every week....works for me!

Please don't feel guiltyChewbacca, you earned your bonus and a bedding set is something that you will enjoy and appreciate for a long time. It's lovely to have a bit of luxury in our lives if we can afford it!

I've come late to this, but Chewy, you did the right thing. I have three sets, just right. My temptation at the moment is new towels. I don't need any more, haven't really got room in the airing cupboard, but oh, they are so lovely. Maybe in the sales?

I am generous with family but sometimes forget to treat myself and always ask myself do I need it, so I understand where you are coming from however you do spend a lot of time in bed and you will sleep well in new nice bedding. You have been generous to others and sometimes you should treat yourself. Enjoy your lovely bedding.

Although what I really like is clean bedding, I change it all every week but would really like to change it twice weekly ( if I had the energy) that just washed scent is heavenly.

When you think how much time in our lives we spend in bed ( a lot) we should have nice bedding!

Chewy anything that you really appreciate having is worth having.It seems to me you spent the money well, on family, on charities and on yourself, or at least for the house.
We have about six sets ( without checking can’t be exact) but only bought two sets in the last five years, the others are quite old, although I still like them.

I always look at the Christmas bedding, especially for little single beds, then think 'Noooo!' and remove myself from temptation.

Saw some lovely sets in Home Sense today at very reasonable prices, but had more than enough to spend my pension on - maybe in post-Christmas sales.

I love good bedding ,I've no idea how many sets I have ,but I have several sets for each bed in the colour scheme of the room they're for ....same with towels ,each room has its own colour.I dont spend money on jewellery or booze or pampering myself.Its my choice how I spend my cash

There's nothing nicer than a beautifully made up bed with lovely bedlinen. The only problem might be not wanting to use the other bedding you have.

Bedding is not an indulgence it's a necessity in my book. Spending money on clothes on a whim which don't really suit you and are only worn once (if at all), or kitchen gadgets from Lakeland which look sooo seductive in the shop but gather dust in the cupboard, beautiful shoes which you don't need and hurt like hell - to name just a few extravagances. Bedding definitely isn't. Expensive perfume is my worthwhile extravagance.

Sod it! Since when has 3 sets of bedding been considered extravagant ?

I always spend the most I can afford on my bedding for two main reasons. First because I like it and second because it is probably more economic in the long run as it lasts for so long. I’ve had my very high thread count sheets for Yonkers and they aren’t remotely worn and feel splendid the same with the duvet etc.

Please don’t feel guilty, you earned it, enjoy! (Take a picture so you can gaze at it downstairs too!)

True enough Jalima! I know I'll enjoy sleeping in it and, as you say, really good quality bedding does feel lovely. I've only ever had Sainsburys or M&S bedding in the past so this will have to "see me out"!
