Offensive chips?

Cleaned (well quickly ) tree is done, decorations out, held the ladder for DH as he strung lights outside [wish he wouldn't), do I deserve some chips now?
Well, I am going out for dinner (no chips though) but mulled I hope

but I must go and decorate the tree and clean up after the workmen.

Emptynester I live in Tonbridge and work part-time in the school those girls were probably from! Mind you, that cheese does live up to it's name!

I wish there was a ban on people eating hamburgers on the train/in the theatre, or anywhere other than in a burger-bar. The smell is horrible.

I was once stuck on a bus with a baby with a full and putrid nappy (my baby ), hoping no one would notice. Of course as time went on the muttering started - "What is that smell?", etc. By the time we got off some of them had decided the local sewage works was the problem and were going to complain to the council.

I told him I wasn't planning to eat them. . Almost pleaded with him. But no - he wasn't moved my my hungry little face!

What I don't fully understand is how did the busdriver know you had chips if the were wrapped and in your bag?

I think it is a difficult problem. The poor driver doesn't know whether you are going to start eating them once on the bus. Then there is the problem of if people already have carried chips onto the bus - how does he stop the next person that has a curry, chinese or kebab in their bag?

One way to get a seat or indeed a whole carriage on a train!!

Have never had a problem on a bus, but bought some ‘Stinking Bishop’ cheese in London and noticed on the train back to Sussex, that the very distinctive odour was seeping from the shopping bag, despite the shop double wrapping it. I apologised to my near neighbours explaining the problem and everyone was very nice. However, some schoolgirls got on at Tonbridge, walked into our carriage, took one sniff and both said ‘What on earth is that smell’ ooh that’s disgusting’ and went and sat elsewhere. I was so embarrassed, I swore I would never buy it again!

I have smelled worse things on a bus
Many many years ago and until I had my own car I used public transport to get to work.Early mornings, body odour stale booze breath many the times I have got off the bus well before my destination

I wish bus drivers were more vigilant about people taking drugs on buses in my city! Dgd found a used syringe (complete with dried blood & heroin remnants!!) down the side of a seat & dd witnessed someone smoking heroin at the back of a bus on the way to work (which she reported).
I had an extremely drunk man fall on me the other week on a bus. I complained the driver shouldn't have let him on, he was obviously pissed as a fart, but apparently it's at the drivers discression!!! Same man in attempting to press the bell poked another lady in the boob!!
It took me days to recover from pushing the drunken bum off me!!
I'd put up with the smell of chips any day over that!!

One Christmas many years ago I won a huge turkey. Having already bought one, which I had cooked and we had part eaten, I cooked the spare, didn't have a freezer and fed up with turkey gave it to my aunt who at that moment called in to see what my children had for presents. DH having gone to work aunty had to take the bus home and decided to take the just cooked turkey. Although wrapped well, the smell of roast turkey would have covered the bus.Perhaps more accommodating in those days but she got away with it,the bus driver having remarked 'won't charge for the other passenger.'

But firstly, how did he know she wouldn’t eat them on the bus and secondly the OP has said they did smell although wrapped up. I can’t believe the unkind comments about the driver - those making them clearly have no idea what doing a job like that entails. FGS one woman wants to take chips home when there is absolutely no overriding need for that and the driver follows his company’s terms and conditions - what’s not to like? Of course he should be reported and sneered at as a ‘jobsworth’ how incredibly unkind.

Yes, I understand where he is coming from...I love the smell of chips but mingle that with all other foods that used to be be consumed on the London tube...I think you would change your mind! Food smells linger...a brat swearing its head off doesn't!

If it's any consolation, my dad wouldn't allow chips in his car. I couldn't borrow it to go for chips. He hated the smell. He never ate a chip in his life!

This is among the reasons why public transport isn't as popular in this country as the government would like it to be. In the move to remove the classes of travel (1st class etc) they are trying to make all public transport suitable for city workers. In less developed countries and I suspect many regions of Europe, trains and buses are considered perfectly acceptable forms of transport even for crates of chickens. You simply make sure you're in the cheap section with the wooden seats. Obviously with plush seating everywhere no one wants anything with an odor that might cling to it and fight with the perfume and aftershave of the financial city workers.

With the second driver allowing you on his bus it sounds as though it is up to the individual drivers disgression but I must say he sounded a bit mean if your chips where wrapped up.

I might have denied having any chips if they were hidden away in your bag! He was just being mean and I doubt he had authority to search you!

Maybe you should have offered him a chip.
