Children being dogmatic!

I have a significant birthday coming up and my two DS and one DD have arranged a long weekend for me, with all the family, staying in a large concerted barn. My two DS have two DC each - the eldest of which is 4 years old. My DD has a tiny French Bulldog puppy. My eldest DS has said if my DD brings the dog he and his family will not come. I presume it is because his older son (aged 4) is not keen on dogs. However the puppy is no bigger than a cat and is well trained. Neither of my two DS has yet met the puppy. It is not often all the family gets together like this and I want to find a way to resolve it!

grin I'm not sure that there are any dogs in Heaven NotTooOld, you'll be fine.

The dog sounds very sweet but it's not the best time to introduce him to the children.

Ranworth - this is not your problem. Let the others sort it out. Personally, I'm with luckygirl as I don't like dogs either, well, only sheep dogs and dogs for the blind and deaf. Oh, and a soppy golden retriever that belongs to a friend of mine. All the others are just hair dropping, crotch-sniffing, slobbering, jumping-up-at-you nuisances. There, I've said it. Am I damned for all eternity?

My friend did that with her baby brother, when she was four..

My granddaughter loved my puppy so much that she carried it around, despite being told often not to. Inevitably the puppy was dropped and ended up with a broken leg.

An occasion of this sort is not the right thing to take a puppy to, however well-trained it is. Too many people will scare it and probably cause it to forget it is house-trained!

One little boy is known to be scared of dogs, and he is not going to become less so meeting a puppy at a large family gathering.

He might well lose his fear of dogs if he visits his auntie in her home with his parents and can get to know the dog in his own time, but if you force him to be with dogs you are running the risk of making a natural childhood fear into something he never gets over.

The puppy must take second place here; frankly, unless your DD is treating it as a surrogate child she should be able to work that out for herself. If she can't then let her and her puppy stay at home!

This may sound harsh, so I hasten to add that I love both puppies, dogs, kittens, cats and children, but the children should always come first.

Oh dear predictive texts are mucking up my spelling.

Jalima ‘twas luckygirl herself who alluded to mental illness - I merely reassured her on that count. I’m sure however you’re jumping to her defence will be a great comfort to her.

rosie1959 Tue 21-Nov-17 15:28:58

Perhaps your DD has a friend who will mind the puppy whilst she is away
It really is only one small dog so I really can't see a problem with enough adults to supervise but my grandchildren are very used to dogs and how to behave around them

Luckygirl Tue 21-Nov-17 15:01:24

Or perhaps ask someone to put the tiger in a cage!

CherryHatrick Tue 21-Nov-17 15:00:21

Friday don't worry about the vowels, that just takes practice; getting your knickers in a twist on the other hand can be downright painful...grin

Ranworth1 Tue 21-Nov-17 14:58:20

luluaugust - your are right about DD's baby!!

Margs Tue 21-Nov-17 14:37:52

I often muse that dogs are far more civilised than adults and kiddies combined......better table manners for sure!

Jalima1108 Tue 21-Nov-17 14:32:19

I don’t see you as mentally ill anyway luckygirl
Thank goodness for that, I'm sure she will be relieved to hear that.
Neither do the rest of us btw.

Are you a reincarnation Friday? It is so confusing these days with posters being allowed to have more than one persona or to change their names mid-stream.

Friday Tue 21-Nov-17 14:12:52

I don’t see you as mentally ill anyway luckygirl. I’m terrified if tigers, genuinely terrified. Happily I don’t meet them walking down the street in RL. If I did and it was upsetting me then I’d seriously think about getting some help with this phobia.

Love the alliterative pyschological perspicacity (genuinely do) but doubt I could actually say it without getting vowels in a twist.

Friday Tue 21-Nov-17 14:08:18

Oh I’ve been sussed!

CherryHatrick Tue 21-Nov-17 14:01:54

Friday have you by any chance slipped your leash and escaped from the realms of Mumsnet? It is rare to see such psychological perspicacity over here on GN...

Lona Tue 21-Nov-17 14:01:53

Friday you made a huge assumption there about Luckygirl. No one is taking this thread into dog hate territory.

Luckygirl Tue 21-Nov-17 13:42:36

I don't rejoice in it; and neither do I see it as an accurate description of me. I do not hate dogs; I just find it unacceptable that anyone who might is seen as mentally ill and in need of treatment; and that there are hopeless dog owners who see it as acceptable to allow their animals to be a nuisance to others.

Friday Tue 21-Nov-17 12:59:01

I don’t know you Luckygirl but I can tell you rejoice in that status.

sarahellenwhitney Tue 21-Nov-17 11:37:08

Ranworth1
I understand the puppy is Dd's child?
A dog not used to children is unadvisable as is children not accustomed to dogs.As much as I do not like having to put a pet in kennels there are no options if this party is to be without trauma

Luckygirl Tue 21-Nov-17 10:46:04

A "dog hater"! - oh no! - that is not allowed! I will high me off to a psychotherapist for a "cure"!!

No puppy on this weekend - if anyone feels this child needs "doing good to" and training to like dogs, then a jolly family weekend is not the time to do it.

Jalima1108 Tue 21-Nov-17 10:11:37

Poor puppy, being landed in the midst of all that jollity and with four little children to add to the mix.

Elrel Tue 21-Nov-17 10:11:10

What does DD say? Puppy is her responsibility.
I'm seeing the concerted barn as having musicians popping up to perform!

Coconut Tue 21-Nov-17 10:08:07

How utterly selfish to dump this on you when it’s supposed to be your treat. The “adult” causing the issue should be having a civilised chat with the dog owner as to how best they can amicably resolve the issue, without dragging you into the middle of it.
