Jesus replaced with a Gregg's sausage roll.

The Guardian would have us believe that only 'flaky' Christians are likely to be upset by Gregg's depiction of the Nativity, placing a sausage roll in the manger.

So, Christians are 'flaky" (oh so witty, not) to be upset?

I am no longer a church-goer but I was brought up as a Christian, as were many of us I suspect, and I am offended that Greggs think it is OK to offend as they have. Not only that, journalists like this oh so lofty sneering one place the blame for any offence on silly Christians who are obviously not normal if they have faith.

It really sickens me, this media hatred of certain groups when some are beyond criticism.

One journalist suggested all religions are open to parody and it is par for the course. I'd suggest otherwise. Make fun of Mohammed and you'll be blown to smithereens. Think Charlie Hebdo.

The hilarity the defaced manger scene has caused over the internet puzzles me. Greggs in their insensitivity have become the comic heroes and Christians, for believing in Christ's lowly birth, are the idiotic 'right wing' reactionaries, according to left wing media.

I am cross at the power of social media to dictate what we should think, but also on behalf of my truly lovely Christian friends. One told me she has 'turned the other cheek'.

How do you feel?

Artist, Nathan Wyburn, paints a portrait of Jesus using a Greggs sausage roll as a paintbrush.

silly question Trisher , silly reply, an attempt too keep the thread going perhaps

ffinnochio Sun 19-Nov-17 20:17:10

I wonder if GNHQ will put this discussion on Fb/Twitter?

Too contentious probably. hmm

trisher Sun 19-Nov-17 20:14:41

Ah so atheists can pray but not sing, who would have known God was so particular? I can see him now sitting ticking off offences. Oh dear! I've sung so many hymns and gospel songs in my time I'm probably going straight to hell.

Anniebach Sun 19-Nov-17 20:05:56

No, Trisher, a pray cannot be compared with a hymn of praise , the first can be a cry of despair when all else has failed , a worth a try thought perhaps, a hymn of praise is acknowledging the existence of God and exalting him

lemongrove Sun 19-Nov-17 20:03:59

Except......it isn’t always Baggs grin

Baggs Sun 19-Nov-17 20:01:55

"All publicity is good publicity".

Jalima1108 Sun 19-Nov-17 19:53:09

I am sure whoever has worked at sea in perilous conditions will understand the feeling behind it trisher.

lemongrove Sun 19-Nov-17 19:50:32

Great post Tickertape well said.smile

trisher Sun 19-Nov-17 19:45:36

It's part of my heritage Jalima It may be known to most as the Navy Hymn but for the Hull fishing community it was always the Fishermens' Hymn. As I said sung in the working men's clubs I think every evening about 9pm but I could be wrong about that (it's a long time since I was there) but certainly when ever a trawler was missing.
Anniebach if people can pray although they expect no answer then equally they are entitled to praise a God they don't believe in. I used to sing in a Gospel choir- loved the music.

NanKate Sun 19-Nov-17 19:28:12

Absolutely Tickertape, well said.

Jalima1108 Sun 19-Nov-17 19:22:22

whitewave grin

there is such a thing as adverse publicity!

Anniebach Sun 19-Nov-17 19:20:59

But Jen this thread is all about one company and it's not my brothers, you are silly at times

Anniebach Sun 19-Nov-17 19:19:38

In The Bleak Winter's author wasn't born until 1830, it speaks of The Lord God Almighty, who did the Christian church pinch it from?

Jalima1108 Sun 19-Nov-17 19:19:30

That is a lovely post tickertape.

I think the people responsible for the picture in the Gregg's calendar just think that they are cleverer and funnier than they are in actuality.

Even non-Christians can surely feel the joy, the love and the giving - especially to those in need - at that time of year (and I hope all year round) without puerile and non-funny advertising.

How interesting that people who are very much anti-Forces chose the Naval Hymn as their favourite. It is one that brings tears to my eyes, played at DF's funeral.
Before anyone says anything, I used to slog round the streets collecting for the Mission for Deep Sea Fisherman. No matter who is at sea, they all deserve our thoughts and prayers.

whitewave Sun 19-Nov-17 19:19:09

Greggs must be astounded at all the free advertising

durhamjen Sun 19-Nov-17 19:16:51

Why? How much does your brother's business get?
What charitable donations does your brother's building business give? You do the books, don't you?

Anniebach Sun 19-Nov-17 19:12:00

Be interesting to know how much tax relief Greggs receives

durhamjen Sun 19-Nov-17 18:54:24

I used to love singing that hymn, trisher, especially when in All Saints or St Mary's, Lowgate. I still know all the words.
Same with Jerusalem, which was pinched by Christians, as was my favourite carol, In the Deep Midwinter.

maryeliza54 Sun 19-Nov-17 18:50:16

ticker I think it’s been established that there are many Christians who haven’t found the sausage roll offensive at all - you cannot speak for all Christians. What I find ridiculous is your statement that liberals ‘scream’ - some may and in that case are like the Christians who scream outside abortion clinics and physically attack gay men. Of the people I know of all faiths and none many do much for others quietly and without wanting recognition. No one group has a monopoly on that. Greggs are great

Anniebach Sun 19-Nov-17 18:49:33

Trisher, I don't understand why you asked such a question, everyone has the right to pray surely

Caro1954 Sun 19-Nov-17 18:40:51

I’m so glad there are some things we can agree on Trisher. Your choice of hymn, it’s connection to the trawler men of Hull and that it was a complete waste of, often, young lives.

tickertape Sun 19-Nov-17 18:35:20

TerriBull. You are right. For those who are Christians it is EXTREMELY offensive to replace the Christ childchild with a greasy sausage roll. Using pork too is offensive to Jews. What puzzles me is that liberals are finding it funny yet these are the same people who will scream for justice and rights for almost any other group. Why is it OK to hurt Christian feelings? Christians of yore may have bebeen responsible for many atrocities but almost all religious groups have a fanatical sector. Modern day Christians in the UK tend to be mild mannered people who do all sorts of good and charitable work quietly and without need for recognition. Christ is their inspiration. Many of us live our lives based on Christian principles and love for one another is at the centre of that. I am not a practising Christian but Christmas time to me if you remove all the commercialism tends to make people nicer. We gather and feel the love of family and friends if we are lucky and we appreciate our blessings. Christmas focuses us on love and Christ is at the heart of that. The baby in the manger helps us to remember we are blessed especially at this time of year. Don't most of us " get the feeling" at this time of year?

For some Christmas is a difficult time and I appreciate that and sympathise but so many people reach out to others less fotunate during this particular holiday to alleviate suffering. It brings out the best in most of us.

Christ is central to Christmas. The people responsible for that ad ought to be ashamed. It reflects very badly on Gregg's.

trisher Sun 19-Nov-17 18:33:27

I love Eternal Father possibly because besides being the Navy hymn it was the hymn sung by the population of Hull (and in working men's clubs ) when a trawler went down. Most of the people singing would have known someone who was lost. It could be said that I find it more moving than Christians who think that the dead are living on somewhere whereas I think it was just a complete waste of lives and often of very young men. Do you not think that everyone has a right to pray Annie even though they do not believe that prayer will be answered?
