Asking visitors to pay and not asking visitors to pay has nothing to do with the 'they let anyone in'. Cathedrals cost so much money for repairs , heating, staff , surely better to pay than have a beautiful Cathedral close? So many Parish churches are closing , sad . We need them.

You can attend services free of charge in any church or cathedral, but some cathedrals ask for a donation at other times to look round.This helps with the wear and tear and upkeep.

Black people couldn't go into white churches in America.

Ripon you don't have to or Durham.
York you pay to go in unless you are going to a service or are a local, in which case you have to have a card to show you are local.

Or a colour code, or a quick check on your credentials.

You have to pay to go inside Coventry Cathedral.

I hadn't realised Ripon was getting a new Bishop Jen. Lovely cathedral with a great community spirit. They put on all sorts there; some fascinating historical stuff.

They let anyone in too.

I missed the original reporting of the 'sausage roll Jesus' and have just waded through all 28 pages of this thread so I'm slightly shellshocked, but couldn't pass up the opportunity to tell you an alternative sausage roll story that happened a couple of years ago.
My friend was pondering her Christian faith and decided that she would try to see Jesus in everyone she met that day. Later she was in the town and came across a man who looked to be homeless so she asked herself what she would do if he was Jesus. As she was about to go and get her husband a sausage roll for lunch she decided she would also get one for the man in the street. However, when she gave her offering to the man he politely declined saying that he didn't eat pork. When she was recounting the story later we laughed with her as said of course Jesus wouldn't eat pork, I should have bought him something else! My friend has since taken up a post with the Salvation Army.
