Heating on yet?

Just being nosy! Have you turned your central heating on yet?

Ours went on on Oct 7th last year (sad of me to remember!), but have held out to date. The mornings are definitely getting nippier and it won't be long now. We live 'Down Souf'' so conscious we have had milder weather than many over the past couple of weeks.

When we first give in we tend to manage with an hour in the morning and 3 hours in the evening to begin with. We live in an old cottage that is prone to damp, so we keep the spare bedroom heated along with the rest. We never put heating on in the kitchen - just benefit from the cooking heat!

I have been in and out of several houses recently where heating is most definitely on full-blast and I know this has sometimes been because of a health issue, but the heating bills must be astronomical.

I hate being cold so put it on for an hour or so in the evening but turn it off after that as that is enough but would rather save on other things than heating and its off all day while at work so don't feel guilty

We have a second home in Cumbria when we are not there, there is a timer which goes on two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening most of the year, except the middle of Summer, however when we are there we have the heating on most of the time, when we go out for the day we turn it off, it warms up quickly when we turn it on again. We live in Sweden, the heating is well and truly on now, and will be until about April next year, we have already had to scrape the ice off the car windows.Warm wishes to everyone.

Our house warms up very quickly so I pop it on for ten minutes first thing to take the chill out of the air. The evening it stays on a bit longer, maybe twenty minutes then i turn it off until the house gets too cold to be comfortable. I've been doing this a couple of weeks now but the winter quilt went back on about a month ago.

Ours is put on when we need it, whatever time of year that maybe.

Thermostat at 21c - off until, end of Septemberish then on from 6.30am to 9pm until about April ish . So today for instance it hasn’t come on since first thing. Not sur3 if it’s on at the moment although it isn’t cold so probably not.

We cannot turn our heating off. It is controlled by the thermostat, It is permanently set at 18.5 degrees C and only comes on morning and evening. In really cold weather we just light the stove during the day and it provides enough heat to keep downstairs warm until the heating switches back on again.

Turn it on in the morning when I get up, warms the house up (and the towel rail in the bathroom!) and that seems to keep the house warm all day. If we feel chilly in the evening, we put the gas fire n in the sitting room.

Teacheranne I did the same switched from Eon to Sainsburys and saved a lot of money, unfortunately Sainsburys contract runs out on the 31st of this month so am in the process of switching to First Utility, which is slightly cheaper than Sainsburys was.
I was once told that it is cheaper to leave the thermostat on permanent, although I do turn it of for Summer it is on all the time in winter.

No, only once for an evening a few weeks ago.
It's like summer here today.
My thermostat is at 15 when I do put it on. Can't afford heat.

TellNo1Ok Sun 08-Oct-17 17:26:01

Not yet on in the mornings but late afternoon when it feels chilly and getting darker ... on it goes until about 10 pm...
I feel comfortable at about 20%.

But my enviable neighbour has an oil fired aga which is on day and night all year... scrumptious... and rarely too hot...

Why have heating if you don't use it when feeling cold. If it's cold in September- heating on, if we get lucky and have an Indian summer in October heating goes off.

Imperfect27 Sun 08-Oct-17 16:33:32

Have to smile ... DH put the heating on this afternoon 'Just to see that it is working.' I am boiling ... !

HurdyGurdy Sun 08-Oct-17 16:31:20

Not as in "we've got the heating on", but it's been on for an hour a couple of times when it's been really chilly. The benefits of being menopausal - never feel the cold grin

Ours is on 22, most all year.

Kateykrunch Sun 08-Oct-17 15:44:29

Yes, we have ours on and I'm boiling, but too idle to get up and turn it down.

Mine has been on even over the Summer. I live in a Park Home (Mobile Home) which I had insulated last year. I leave my thermostat at 15C & it has been coming on during the night/early morning. I turn it up to 16C when I get up as my Lounge/Dining Room has 6 windows & is quite cold in the morning, however if it's a sunny day it warms up lovely.

I have also turned heating up if it's been a damp day as that makes home feel chilly. I also turn it up if I want warm towels for my shower & warm up wet room.

Radiator in my bedroom is turned down & I always have the window open a little even in the winter. Bed is the one place I'm really warm, I don't wear PJs in bedblush, if it gets really cold I put a fleecy throw on the bed.

I'm lucky that when my home is warm it retains the heat & I rarely turn thermostat above 18C, I have a thermometer in my Lounge so I can check temperature is above 21C

Morgana Sun 08-Oct-17 15:00:40

Had ours on for a few weeks even though we live 'down south'. And our winter duvet and I wear bed socks pretty much all year round (sleep much better with them on). Why be cold if u can be warm?!!

NanaRayna Sun 08-Oct-17 14:59:15

Solitaire I'm sorry to say body type doesn't predict how warm you feel. As a chilly chubby I've spent my life feeling that fat is not insulation - just another layer of frigidity! confused

MaryXYX Sun 08-Oct-17 14:44:31

I don't have central heating. I'm in retirement housing and all they allow are storage heaters. I haven't used them yet, and I'm still using a summer quilt on the bed. Probably change that soon.

LesleyC Sun 08-Oct-17 14:18:44

Some of you are a hardy lot! I always feel the cold and the thermostat is set at 20F, so it comes on all year round if it falls below that. It is only set for twice a day though, morning and evening and I just advance the programme if I feel colder during the day. The bathroom radiator is electric with a timer and is always on morning and evening as I like my towels warm and dry and to have warmth when I am taking a shower or bath.

Kim19 Sun 08-Oct-17 14:15:14

Nope....haven't had any of it on yet. Always start with extra layers of clothing. However......the dreaded deed is just about to happen triggered by the arrival of S&P with GC later today. They seem to like it much warmer than me and I want the wee ones to be totally comfortable. It will all revert to off once they depart in a few days. I find my breathing much better in a cooler house which I discovered quite by accident.

lemongrove Sun 08-Oct-17 14:07:46

Yes, for the last week, set it at 20 which seems to be our optimum setting.
As the day warms up the CH doesn’t come on as it reaches 20 anyway, so really only mornings and evenings.

Mercedes55 Sun 08-Oct-17 13:45:53

We live down south and we have one of those HIVE smart thermostats and I keep it set to 18c, so on a few mornings the heating has come on, but not on many and not at all in the evening. I don't mind being a bit chilly once I am up and dressed, but I draw the line at getting out of bed in the morning and having to get washed and dressed feeling cold!
