I recall my late Nana asking her blind brother, who played the piano beautifully, to play some of the "old tunes". 'By a babbling brook' would always make her cry.

oldgoat Sun 15-Oct-17 14:11:41

I was really moved by your comment jamison Isn't it surprising how the memory of tunes from your childhood remain when more recent events can't be recalled? X

Jamison Sun 15-Oct-17 14:10:31

So very true Soop, so many happy memories to a certain song or piece of music.

soop Sun 15-Oct-17 14:06:48

Jamison It's lovely when a happy, distant memory can be resurrected, thanks to music. smile

soop Sun 15-Oct-17 14:04:57

The tune was named 'The Devil's Gallop' by Charles Williams. You can hear it on www.youtube.com/watch

Jamison Sun 15-Oct-17 14:04:12

Oldgoat, my dh just did a rendition of the ovalteenies, thanks, his memory is not great but that was so good to hear.and so was the big smile on his face at happy memories.

oldgoat At the end of every Dick Barton episode an urgent sounding voice would say something like - Will Snowy survive? Will Dick Barton save him in time?

oldgoat Sun 15-Oct-17 13:58:47

Your wish is my command soop grin

soop Sun 15-Oct-17 13:58:11

Baggs and oldgoat I have just this minute visited Ovaltine collectables on eBay. There is an original mug with the words to the song on it. Something like starting price at £3.50

oldgoat Sun 15-Oct-17 13:56:41

Yes, jollyg I remember those mugs but I don't think I had one of my own.
OH remembered the Dick Barton tune soop He hummed it to me but I didn't recognise it. Not blaming his singing, of course.

soop Sun 15-Oct-17 13:53:00

jollyg I hope that you kept the mugs and covers. Collectors items for sure.

oldgoat Could you carefully wrap and post one on to me please?

oldgoat Sun 15-Oct-17 13:47:31

Well, I've found a recipe for 'lardy cake soop .Nigel Slater says it's "as comforting as hugging a well-padded gran aunt" . I'll have to give it a try.

jollyg Sun 15-Oct-17 13:47:29

Was there not an ovaltinies mug complete with a cover and a wee blob[tassle] at he side hanging down.

We had 2 ! lucky us

soop Sun 15-Oct-17 13:41:04

oldgoat grin

I remember 'lardy cake' soop but my Mum used to call them 'fatty cakes' . Mmmm, my mouth is watering at the thought. Wonder if I could find a recipe on t'internet? Just off to make a cake for GS to take to school on 'non-uniform day' . They always seem to sell them for less than they cost to bake.

Nellie You have every right to voice an opinion. When we lived in Cornwall, many small villages had a dirth (is that a real word?) of holiday homes.

granniequeenie The radio is stylish. MacSporran sold the one that he had for countless years on eBay. He also made a tidy sum selling his huge collection of Dinky cars.

ann Enjoy your roast lamb dinner this evening. Delicious!

callgirl1 You are fully entitled to scoff nibble on a cream cake. I would have succumbed had I the chance. There is a type of cake 'lardy cake' that I used to buy from a bakery in the Midlands. It was the most delicious cake I've ever sampled. I was young and slender at the time! Calorie intake wasn't something I worried about.

soop Sun 15-Oct-17 13:11:38

Baggs I'm reading the latest bletherings first. The night that your MiniBaggs and pals shared, would have been the best treat ever had I done something similar at her age. I'm a tad envy.

oldgoat Happy memories of sitting beside the Marconi and listening to 'Dick Barton Special Agent'. I can almost hear the music that accompanied it.

soop Sun 15-Oct-17 13:02:40

A little late arriving in the kitchen. We've been attempting to stay upright as we walked through the village. Nowt to do with having imbibed a wee dram last night...more the force of the wind that kept blowing *MacSporran's hat off.

Bear with me. I've to play catch up yet again. You lot don't arf keep me on my toes. Thank goodness that you do. I wouldn't be without you. You help to keep me on the right side of sanity. wink

Baggs Sun 15-Oct-17 11:10:46

When I went to bed (early) last night, there were two girls in MiniB's room. When I woke & checked the time on my phone at two-thirty there were two missed calls from another girl's mum so I went to check and there were three girls (still up, still watching films). Texted the mum with apologies and info.

There are now two again as first visitor got picked up by her dad to catch a train to somewhere....

Baggs Sun 15-Oct-17 11:06:09

grin

oldgoat Sun 15-Oct-17 10:53:51

Now, you've made me feel REALLY
old baggs !

'We are the Ovalteenies
Little girls and boys
At work and play we're more than good
La la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la
We're happy girls and boys.'

Maybe I'll sing it to you in Edinburgh!

Baggs Sun 15-Oct-17 09:58:32

My dad used to sing the Ovalteenies song, oldgoat.

Charleygirl Sun 15-Oct-17 09:48:08

I agree, a very smart bathroom. You must be so relieved that it is all over and you can now enjoy it.

I did next to zilch yesterday but slept like a log. I have fewer things on my mind to keep it in over drive which may help. I do not know where the promised sunshine is- are any of you lot hogging it?

oldgoat Sat 14-Oct-17 23:52:01

Lovely bathroom greyduster . I like your choice of tiles!

oldgoat Sat 14-Oct-17 23:50:19

Is your 'new' radio a Marconi grannyqueenie ? It looks just like the one we had when I was a little girl. It had all sorts of interesting channels like 'Hilversum' on the tuning screen. We used to huddle round it to listen to 'Journey into Space' and 'The Ovaltinies' (sp?) Anybody else remember hearing them?
