The yoof of today...

Funny how we can remember all the words to songs of long gone by, but have no idea what we were doing last Tuesday (in my case, anyway). I suppose it shows the power of music in all its forms.

And of course "Nellie the elephant" which gd loves!

"Puff the magic Dragon", which always made me cry. "3 wheels on my wagon and I'm still rolling along" and, sung loudly with the boy next door, "I'm a pink toothbrush you're a blue toothbrush" . Still sing this with my gcs.

I taught GS the Ying tong song and DSs thought it sounded racist! Nevertheless we sing it on Skype every time and he has his own version now -ying tong, ying tong, ying tong I love you. That'll do for me!

I didn't sing classic nursery rhymes to my grandkids, it was Nellie the Elephant, the mouse in the windmill in old Amsterdam etc As the boys got older and liked the old James Bond films, we watched Dr No and I taught them " underneath the mango tree". When my son asked his boys if they wanted to come and stay with Nanny, the oldest said yes, but as long as we don't have to sing the mango song ! Whenever my granddaughters had problems, I would burst into Reggae " don't you worry bout a thing, coz every little things gonna be alright " !! It was a standing joke, and they in turn do it to me now !

My mum used to sing this,

Will you please come down and finish the baby, finish the baby do
He's got two eyes and one little nose
Ten little fingers and ten little toes
Got no hair, got no teeth, and the poor little thing can't chew....
So will you please come down and finish the baby, finish the baby do!

I used to do this with actions and to amuse my surrogate GD

Ohh Little White Bull! How I loved my dad singing that Musicelf! That and 'I saw a Mouse, Where? There on the stairs...' Sorry cant remember the title lol.

Nanny27 My mother had an old record player that played 78s (remember them) and she had an LP of Danny Kaye tongue twisters which is still remember - Moses supposes that noses are roses but Moses supposes erroneously. We used to play it all the time, and a record of Stanley Holloway monologues. We used to love Albert getting eaten by the lion but now I think that 'Brown Boots' is still relevant. I think children would still enjoy them today but they don't get those kind of opportunities.

My Grandson loves Ernie, who drives the fastest Milk Float in the west! So now my great grandchildren sing it, though it made my youngest daughter cry!! Also loved Grocer Jack!

Used to make my daughter cry too lol.
My grandchildren still sing some of the songs I used to sing, mainly thanks to my daughter teaching them! Think my daughters favourite was "When I'm 64!"
Some wonderful songs, thing is, even some of the teens of today agree that the older songs were the better ones, my 18 yr old grandson much prefers music from the '70's and '80's to the stuff they bring out today, which to me, always sounds the same!!

Lots of the songs my OH and I share come from the BBC Singing Together programme. O’er the ocean flies a merry fay, A keeper would a-hunting go, the Ash Grove among others.

My DH and I were only talking about this the other day, remembering the old "Stewpot" radio programme and "Uncle Mac." They played fun songs, children's songs, songs that we still remember, such as.......The Bubble Car, Runaway Train, Little White Bull, Ugly Duckling.....so many more.

When I was a music teacher, we'd often sing some of the old songs, which the kids loved - their favourite was Right, Said Fred - and I like to think that now they're adults they will remember them for their own children.

I sing lots of childhood songs to my grandchildren. My grandson sang the Runaway train at his leaving assembly at pre school in July. The staff wanted to know how he knew it. Nanny was the response ?Little White Bull is another favourite.

My Mum taught us Maria, Maria she pee'd on the fire and It was in Bagdad where me Mother met me Dad! My kids then taught the Maria song to their little friends who's Mum was not impressed. The 'Maria' song was actually mentioned at Mums funeral, but I hasten to add Ava Maria was played during the ceromony!
