Can you name ten things
(85 Posts)That you like about yourself
Physical attributes, or personality traits? I asked for ten because its hard to stick to three when it comes to songs or heartthrobs; but can everyone count ten reasons to feel good about yourself?
I'm kind
Tolerant
Funny
Loving
Optimistic
Intelligent
Good at putting others at ease
Politically active in defence of society & animals/wildlife
Good at my job
I'm fiercely in love with my husband
It does feel slightly odd listing the best things about self, but I thing it's good for us psychologically, do kudos to the op
Not sure how to respond with so many paragons out there.
1) I can grow 3 whiskers overnight
2) I have feet that hobbits envy
3) Cook, so that our family motto is 'Eat Out'
4) Drive like a sloth
5) Loyal to old cardigans
6) Loud, and inappropriate giggler
7) Sing like a Banshee
8) Have stuck a fork and a peg to my own hair with Gorrilla
glue, not many people can do this
9) Mother to the best kids in the world
10) Naughty and proud of it
Rereading the posts the vast majority are what might be considered as 'feminine virtues'. What more masculine traits of ourselves are we proud of?
I find this difficult too but as I haven't met anyone here I'll plat along...
I keep my hair nice
I have vivid blue eyes
I'm caring
I love my dgd
I care for my (small) circle of friends
I fight for fairness and justice
I'm articulate
I'm a good cook
I make great cakes
I am not bad at writing poetry
Wow. That took me some time to put down.
Thank you for making me look at myself in a non negative way ?
And there is an amazing amount of kindness and caring on G.N.
We r all still here. So we are good at surviving!
Happy - glass half full type
Lovely eyes
Nice smile
Good sense of humour
Independent

Love children especially my DGSs
Pet lover
Love my own company but still enjoy the company of others
Well read
That's my 10, these are things I'm often told not just my own opinion
I would rather say' what I don't'
For starters ? 'a pushover'.
Number 1: I'm generally quite modest.......
so this is an interesting exercise!
In no particular order:
A good mother
A good friend
A good listener
Honest
I take a lot of pleasure in small things
I can wear clothes well
A good cook
Self sufficient
I like people
It's rather disconcerting how we can all go on auto-pilot to think of negative things about ourselves. A product of our generation.....our parents, as children, were 'seen and not heard'. For us 'blowing our own trumpet' in any form was a sin.
Lovely lists - they don't seem boastful at all to me, simply valuing what is there.
M0nica, your grandmother's sayingbrought to mind my GGM saying 'His trumpeter's dead' if she heard anyone blowing their own.... Except in broad Black Country 'Yower trumpeter's jed'.
Let me think.... there's not actually much I like about myself - I am a physical and mental wreck! So I think I would have to list what others would say:
I am kind
I am a shoulder to cry on
I have got through so much c**p and am still trucking along
I am supportive
I am witty
I am reasonably intelligent
I am thoughtful
I am considerate
I am the one in the family who ensures we all get together sometimes
I am intuitive (I think that's the right word)
Difficult because it's a bit 'boasty' and I am aware that a lot of people find me hard to take. Due to a really, at times, gruesome childhood I am not a natural truster of others and this makes me, at first, reserved. Others like kindness and generosity, of course.
I :-
-look after my health and figure
-I read voraciously and keep myself well informed
-I try to be a good person
-I look after my family and put them first
-I am not stupid and have a good sense of humour
-I am rational on the whole
-I am extremely empathetic and can always see the point of view of others
-I am law abiding, taxpaying and feel I contribute to society by my views and behaviour
-I will work and campaign to keep the good things of my country going until my last breath
-I have been told I write well
My dentist recently told me I had "beautiful gums"
.
Good cook
Good legs
Very good skin
Hair behaves well
Kind to animals & most people
Make loads of time for DGC & will always say yes to babysitting or having them to stay over( not a chore though TBH)
Good sense of humour
I think I am a good friend & make time for my friends
I run a couple of clubs for other women to do crafts etc.
I'm generally cheerful
Now I too feel I shouldn't be saying all this about myself- it was quite hard- but maybe it is good to pat yourself on the back at times rather than feel bad about something you could have done better- nice thread.
I'll ask DH tonight what he thinks of my list- I bet he crosses most of them off- except the cook & legs!! He wouldn't dare!
Not lack of praise when a child, I certaintly do not have low self esteem. Just not comfortable with self praise .
My 'reaction' here is that many of us have grown up with put downs or lack of affirmation and it would seem paying compliments to us in younger years was seen as 'dangerous'. There seems to have been a school of thought in post-war parenting that telling your children that they look 'nice', did 'well' etc. would somehow turn heads and make them dreadfully vain.
I grew up with little confidence in my appearance and achievements because praise was lacking - and I don't mean overblown praise, but simple affirmation. I suspect many were the same and also had 'Don't blow your own trumpet' as another mantra.
Recently I was asked the question MissA poses in this thread as a way towards re-affirming myself following a very low patch. All light humour and 'false' modesty aside, I did / do find it hard, but it can be very worthwhile to take a reflective look at ourselves.
I also think it is very sad when people can find nothing good to say about themselves. All who post here have helped to create a vibrant, caring community that gives good advice, sympathy, empathy and support. So you are all good at some things!
monica we are also often chided for not enough light-hearted threads (like this one), and then again for too many.
Unless I was asking for advice, I'd never have "one eye on people's reactions"...
Ooo er! Modesty prevents me from listing them, if I had any.
And downtoearth.
Annie and greyduster, I'm with you there, I just think I was a little more stark in my response.
I don't think I can think of one thing about myself that I admire, I wish I could.
An earlier poster, chided us for not wanting to list our good points by saying that we are all anonymous on GN so no-one knows exactly who we are. But that is not quite true.
For those of us who have attended meet-ups we are known to all the people we meet there and I, for one, have made a good personal friend through GN.
But even if you have avoided any personal contact with GN members, those of us who have been on GN and posted regularly for any time have a very rounded GN personality having over time given information about our family life and circumstances, possibly location we live in and aired our opinions on all sorts of thing from politics to potty training. So that we have a rounded online personality and the conversational nature of GN makes you feel you know someone (that is why online romance scams work so easily)
I also think that anyone posting a list is going to have one eye on people's reactions to their list and not put down aspects of themselves that they may take pride in but they think would alienate others or expose themselves to criticism.
Not a hope! Ten worst things? How long have you got!
