Charity Bags

I volunteer once a fortnight to 'sort' the items donated to our local well known charity shop.
There are two of us, and after donning rubber gloves (yes, you do need them), we get to work sorting through about seventy bags.
Some of the items get discarded straight away as highly unsuitable or filthy.
However, my post is about leaving goods out for collection in WET weather.
This week i found a bag of really lovely (expensive) summer dresses completely soaked and mildewed as they had been left out in the rain.
I sneaked them home, washed and dried them and took them back to the shop (we really are not supposed to do that!).
The dresses sold within days, and I wonder why people who take time and trouble to select items for charity don't place them in a black bin liner with the charity bag over the top.

I do worry if I put out a charity bag in wet conditions, as the bags have lots of air holes. Never thought of using a bin bag underneath - thanks, grannysue05 smile

I would only take items to a charity shop if they had been washed and ironed, carrying shirts in on hangers. I cannot believe that people would throw any filthy old rubbish into a bag for a charity.

Oh Charleygirl you have no idea what turns up in those bags.
Sometimes really disgusting old undies that have been worn (not washed) and thrown in the collection bag !
We immediately bin these items.

grannysue it would appear that I am in the minority. I also have a separate bag for items which are unsaleable- eg trousers with holes in them, but they have been washed. I am aware that charities get money for tonnes of clothes which I assume are recycled somewhere.
