north central fl here/power off for 3 days just came on.
to those with family.east coast is doing well.electric and digital media is spotty.could reach neice 300 miles away but bestfriends 30 miles away cant get to.
workers and rescue are working hard to restore.keys was flattened ,mostly trailers /caravans which have no place down there anyway.
waiting for some decent news feeds.ft.myers naples are starting to come out of it,ne fl (jax gainesville) is gasless and alot with no power /so refugees are stuck up there.
my little cottage came thru without a scratch yards a mess.

Someone I know is in Tampa, and in a shelter with her many pets. No idea yet whether she will be allowed home, but there is no water, sanitation or electricity anyway to go back to.

Friends of ours went back to their Florida house, east of Orlando, 2 weeks ago. We've had a couple of emails from them, I think they'll be OK.
But they have told us so much about the crocodiles and alligators in the area. Any more water and they'll be swimming free

Fear that the surges will come. When you have low pressure under a hurricane the ocean bulges up under it (because the air is pressing down a lot more gently). The pressure change is so low - and so sudden - that people can report feeling the pressure change in their chests. The meteorologists and oceanographers will have calculated the height and travel of the surge. On the ground it will not be like a tsunami that comes and goes quickly, it will be like a very high tide that lasts for a while, as the bulge passes. Looks like this is the big risk in this low lying state. Lets hope people can shelter above street level. I think we will hear how the Keys have fared when it gets light there.

I wonder what is happening to anyone who is in prison during the Hurricane, would the guards have to stay with the prisoners?

Also imagine being in hospital and seriously ill and not able to look after yourself independently it must be so scary.

Lets hope the surges expected don't come these poor people have enough to cope with at the moment.

Trump has six places in Florida, all in the path of Irma or likely to be flooded. They are all expected to be under water by the end of the century.
They were being asked if Mar A Lago could be used as a shelter a week ago, but two days ago were ordered to evacuate.

I so hope Mar e Largo is blown to the 4 winds. Perhaps that pompous oaf would change his mind about global warming and climate change then!

Nothing biblical about it. It's climate change and just what science has been for a long time now. "More extreme weather events". More rain, more wind, more heatwaves and even more blizzards. There is more heat energy coming out of the ocean than any time since the science of Meterology started looking at it.

Does anyone know if any of Trump's residences have been affected? I believe he has at least 3 down that way.

Every day it seems there is another weather related disaster. My daughter's family have been evacuated from their home in Montana because of wild fires started by lightning. 100,000 acres burned. Smoke now seems to be a big problem.

It feels like an almost biblical apocalypse somehow. The scale of it all and the repetitive nature. So many storms in such rapid succession. Poor souls.

Irma has taken the worst possible track from the point of view of Florida. Mind boggling - they have recommended that a population similar to the West of England (including Bristol) to leave their homes and get out of the way. Meanwhile Storm José is following a similar track across the Caribbean. The eventual loss of life is going to be high. I heard yesterday of someone who was saying she still expected her holiday in Florida next month to go ahead. I suspect that they will have to make a different plan!

We stayed at The Melia in Cayo Coco last year. The beach was beautiful with an absolutely lovely little cove a short walk away. It would seem that the area is destroyed and the hotel very badly damaged. The staff are lovely and I feel very bad for them as they are probably out of work now. The Cubans don't have much and really could have done without this blow to the tourist trade.
