Queen/King of England?

Thus it has always been , i have heard parliament called the English parliament . And what about England pays for Wales to have free prescriptions? Seems we don't pay NIC or tax in Wales

Parliament has two functions really - Parliament of the UK and Parliament of England - Wales has the Assembly with quite a lot of devolved powers and Scotland has a Parliament with devolved powers as does NI when they are all in agreement. England has no separate Parliament nor Assembly with extra elected representatives.

Strictly speaking the current Queen is Queen Elizabeth II of England and Elizabeth, Queen of Scots, while Wales, being a Principality has Charles, Prince of Wales.

I am not a Royalist, but neither am I inclined to make a fuss or challenge the archaic fudged conventions which apply at present. After all when Scotland becomes Independent and adopts a proper Constitution, the remainder of the UK will have to adopt new conventions/flags/ titles etc. (or maybe they will not bother and just muddle along as usual.

Of course Wales is a country, as are the Grand Duchies of Liechtenstein and Luxembourg, the Principality of Monaco, the Kingdom of Sweden, the Republic of France, etc.

What is the differenc?. Lichtenstein is n entirely independent a country and a Duchy.

I don't think there is a difference; so Wales is both a country and a Principality, is that a problem?

Quite a lot of threads don't really matter. We can't be discussing intellectual matters all the time...

I agree, the thing is though, you only find out what a thread is about when you read it, surely? The title isn't enough..

Oh, I do not know, I find titles are like lucky dips, you never know what you may come across when you go blind into a thread with an opaque name. It sometimes takes you into a topic you would otherwise avoid or one you have never thought of but are grabbed by the posts on it.

I dip into threads, if no interest for me I don't post , they are of interest to the person who starts them and those who reply

It can be mildly/a bit/ severely annoying to many people who don't live in England, when the name England is used to mean the whole UK/British Isles.
It rather suggests that those non-English countries of the UK are being forgotten about.

There was a comment on another thread objecting to all the ex-pats in Best Marigold Hotel referring to England rather than Britain or the UK.
Those characters all were actually English, though, and were entitled to refer to their home country of England. imo

My point was that being a principality does not prevent somewhere from being a country. It's just a country whose head of state is a prince, and a grand duchy is a country whose HOS is a grand duke, etc.

The head of state of Wales is the same as England ,Scotland and N.I.

as there are over 85% ENGLISH MP's in Parliament they,re as well calling it what it really is ,devolution gives us control of barely 15% of our affairs .Hardly control at all.We're used to people saying ENGland when they mean the UK and saying Queen of ENGLAND...if they're happy to claim her they are welcome to have her ,its an out of date concept in a modern world .
