Alima We went to a Navy Day when we were living in Cornwall. Brilliant!

A few years ago I was in the garden and heard a plane coming over. When I looked up there was a large propeller powered plane that I didn't recognise for a moment. Then I realised it was the Lancaster from the Battle of Britain Flight! I was thrilled!

One of DH's masonic friends was given a memorial service at Bisley Camp with various masonic high ups making speeches. At the end of it someone had organised a fly past by a Spitfire.

I know what you mean about getting a lump in the throat watching any jets but especially the Red Arrows. We hope to see them at the Bournemouth Airshow soon. Have any of you seen Spitfires in a fly past? Guaranteed to be emotional. We used to live very close to Plymouth Naval Dockyard. One year, when they still had Navy Days, a squadron of Harrier Jump Jets flew over the married patch to get to the carriers. The noise when they had the after burners going was something to behold. There were reports of several Navy wives diving under the table as the jets tore past overhead!

That's the Typhoon, shysal. A sight to behold. We had to buy ear defenders for GS when we saw it at Waddington. I think the lad had his mouth open in awe all afternoon that day. We saw the Vulcan too. Sheer magic. A great loss that it is grounded now.

I get a "personal" red arrows display at least twice a year. They fly right over my house during both the Sunderland Airshow and The Great North Run. I imagine the hunky super fit pilots in their flying suits right above me ( literally) and go all shivery .

I agree with you Greyduster. Jet aircraft make me very emotional, and I don't know why, I think it is the sheer power. I once saw one which I was told was a Eurofighter near Abingdon on display day when I was on an organized walk and embarrassed myself by bursting into tears. It had flames coming from the back and was so powerful. My favourite is the old Vulcan which often flew over my house, with its unmistakable sound. Unfortunately the last one flying has now been grounded.

I have a bit of a thing going on with jet aircraft. We saw the new Typhoon jet being put through its paces at Waddington and it made me go quite weak at the knees (what a nerd!). When my son left the RAF after 22 years, the station offered him a special present - a flight in one of the station's Tornado jets. A privilege not accorded to many. They filed a flight plan that flew him from Leeming, down here and over his favourite football ground then out to the east coast and up to the North of Scotland and back to the station. He had only asked for the football ground bit! It did not, apparently, take long and was one of the best experiences of his life. He even got to do a bit of routine navigating (under the pilot's supervision!).

I went to school in Blackpool and in the 50s I remember going to the Promenade to watch a new Hawker Hunter go by - later, talking to my gardener here, he knew the pilot!

That must have be been for their arrival - no smoke here,.
Just an amazing powerful rush across the sky!

I love the Red Arrows in their pristine formations and have seen them many times. The one that sticks in the memory is when they flew at The Chatsworth Country Fair just after they had lost one of their crew members and they flew the formation with an empty space as if their colleague was still with them. It brought a collective lump to the throat. There were people around us with tears in their eyes, me among them.

I was working late in my office which is close to Blackpool airport. The red arrows gave me a lovely fly past ,complete with coloured smoke, before landing in preparation for our airshow this weekend.

They weren't in formation at all, not displaying, just rushing.

Shysal I did duplicate and I've now asked Gransnet to delete the other thread - because I asked a question here, and I still don't know what a NOTAM is!

I occasionally see Chinook helicopters from Benson. Nothing like this!
