Old Coins

I think you can look up coin values on line - they vary for several reasons - maybe just a few minted in a particular year - so 1936 (the year of the three kings), for example, could be worth more. Also I think the was something about pennies minted in 1952 that made them valuable - I don't think it will be too hard to research - your very own treasure hunt!

Sunseeker, take a look at sold coins on ebay to get an idea of their values. In general unless you have any of the very special dates then old penny and three penny bits are not of much value. A sixpence may be, earlier dates than 1921 are high silver content 92.5% and pre 1947 are 50% silver and some collectors will pay a bit for them, again ebay is a great place to research many 'old' items.

sunseeker, if you find that your coins aren't worth anything, and if you're not into eBay, you could consider not dumping them but giving them to a charity which will sell them to collectors. As far as I know, Oxfam does this, but I'm sure there are others.

Our local Oxfam was selling old threepenny bits for £2.00 each recently. If you want to donate them, there may be a scheme local to you , similar to one that ran here, where coins, old and foreign, were collected by a hospital . The proceeds went towards funding a Robotic operating machine.

My sister in law makes jewellery from old coins so there's definitely a use for them.
