It's absolutely pissing* down here at the moment.

*non-rude use of the word. Getting it out there. I stand up for misunderstood words ☔️?????

The weather forecasters are always mentioning - 'Spits and spots of rain'
Who's spitting?

Jalima1108 Wed 09-Aug-17 20:35:30

It's been bucketing down here since the start of the school holidays!
Or emptying down
Or, as DD said after the '76 drought - oh look, the sky's crying!

TriciaF Wed 09-Aug-17 20:18:45

ps Cherrytree my Grandma used to call it a Gamp too.

TriciaF Wed 09-Aug-17 20:16:56

As Agus - 'bucketting down'
+
It's raining it's pouring
The old man is snoring
He banged his head at the end of the bed
And couldn't get up in the morning

Wheniwasyourage Wed 09-Aug-17 19:25:47

It was dinging down here last week but today has been much better!

Mizzle is used in Somerset to describe mist and light drizzle particularly on Exmoor where we lived for 19 years before moving up to Wiltshire to be nearer to grandchildren.

No fires here, Pamela. We moved down from the hills in Provence just before they started. Lucky escape. Some of the roads were closed, but back to normal now I believe.

No fires in Nice Lillie? If not then enjoy☀️
Is this a thread on rain or on fairies?

shysal Fri 28-Jul-17 16:03:18

Lillie, envy

Sorry people couldn't resist this!
Afternoon stroll along a sunny Promenade des anglais, Nice. So good to see everyone enjoying life, no cares.
Hope your weather is improving.

Just having a thunderstorm here in South Yorks. I've had my wellies on this afternoon tramping through undergrowth looking for a lost cat - reminiscent of festival weather:-(

'Fat' rain when it"s chucking it down, as in great big fat blobs
'Set-in' when it just grizzles ( and I mean grizzle instead of drizzle) and the sky is uniform pale grey, and likely to go on all day.
'Sheets of the stuff' when not heavy or light, but determined in it's intention to not let up it's tiresome constancy.

I love the word "mizzle" it's so descriptive, a mixture of mist and drizzle. I've only heard it used in Yorkshire.

We went on a day trip to Richmond and Kiplin Hall yesterday. It was raining when we left home, and there was an absolute deluge when we arrived in Richmond. Went for lunch at a very nice pub and watched the rain falling on the countryside beyond. It faired up when we got to Kiplin Hall. We did the house first, and when we went for a walk round the gardens the sun was out and it was really rather warm. A day of two halves.

whitewave Thu 27-Jul-17 07:32:51

We had a fine mizzle all day yesterday. Dry today.

SueDonim Wed 26-Jul-17 23:13:28

It was stotting down here this morning but we had a fine, sunny & warm afternoon.

BlueBelle Wed 26-Jul-17 23:01:35

Gran jo I wasn't quite clear, is it only water ?

Lona Wed 26-Jul-17 22:46:01

It's legging it down here! And blowing a gale!
I'm getting pissed off with it now.

Cherrytree59 Wed 26-Jul-17 22:38:47

It peed it down all morning
which meant I needed my Gamp when I popped out for my messages.

The sun came out for a while
Before It clouded over again
but we only had a wee smir o' rain in the afternoon
sunshine tomorrow ??

Chewbacca Wed 26-Jul-17 22:30:31

It's been beautifully sunny and warm in Chester today. Warm enough for shorts and t shirts; sitting outside for lunch and a pleasure cruise up the River Dee. But..... it was beginning to look a little dark and cloudy when we left this evening. I'm told that it's been "hammering down" in Manchester today.

granjo39 Wed 26-Jul-17 22:24:29
