Why do you come to Gransnet?

I haven't read one post which state - you must read all posts .

Just takes a little self control and a dose of commonsense, if you don't want to read a post - just scroll,past it .

I am not in the least Ana. It is not my decision to make but some people seem determined to wrongly interpret just what a 'hide' button would allow - by the sound of things because they are afraid they may be the first to be ignored (although I doubt that is true).

It seems to me that there are a little group who like winding people up on the politics threads - rather than discussing the politics (something I think Primrose referred to elsewhere as 'spamming the thread') It seems some think they may be ignored when all they can rise to is this 'spamming' which others could then choose to ignore.

What do you think your insistence that everyone has to read posts they don't want to is? It can probably be seen in many ways but it is encroaching on bullying
But no-one is standing over you with a pistol to your head forcing you to read what you don't want to!
Or even just making you write out one hundred lines saying 'I must read every post'.

You can skip and ignore what you don't like at any time. Why does there have to be an ignore button?

Yes, that was one of the conclusions I came to when pondering The Meaning of Gransnet.

No, unless one has a compulsion to read everything. Like the notices on the bus or in the hospital waiting room.

Why not just think 'Oh, I won't bother to read that person's posts and skip them?'
Of course, you could miss something of vital importance or get about how the thread is going if you do.

It does NOT censor the thread. If I chose not to listen to or read something that is not censorship. It does not affect the thread for anyone else. Well, I'm sure most of you would 'ignore' the same few posters. The only problem you'd have is if someone 'unignored' commented on a post from an 'ignored' poster and asked you your opinion on it.

Pressing a button to 'ignore' certain posters is censoring the thread for your own purposes. Nothing to do with whether you choose to leave or not.

Ana that just doesn't make sense. In what way is it censorship? If I chose to leave because I did not want to read one or two people's post is that censorship? It is just a way that enables those who want to continue to do so.

There are plenty of Sites / Forums / Political Activism Sites etc. etc. that are for the 'like minded'. Gransnet is more open and long may it remain as such.

It has to be said that when posters are told to 'leave a thread / shut up' then those who want a cosy relationship with only like minded posters forget this is supposed to be an Open Forum.

I think an ignore button would be disastrous.

That person is no longer with us durhamj ( but will no doubt be back at some point.)

You could Annie, I would probably choose not to do so. Neither of us would be influencing the other in any way.

Yes we could avoid posts which could upset us, we could also avoid a balanced discussion for example on the political threads
