Prejudice
Preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.
There you are, Darnsarf. Shame you didn't look that up as well.
I need advice for a mutually messy situation
Aside from the virtual cake obviously...
It would be really helpful for us to know what you like about Gransnet, and what draws you to the site? Is it the general chatter and social aspect, the advice, the competitions, the word games, the articles, the webchats. If you were to pick your top three (or if you can't think of three then just one will do!) reasons for logging on, or what keeps you coming back, what would they be?
Prejudice
Preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.

Opinion - noun ^a view or judgement formed about something , not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.
^
Opinion - synonym belief, judgement, thought, perspective, angle, stance, outlook.
Reference Oxford English dictionary.
Therefore, not prejudiced.
Opinions not based on fact are simply prejudice Norah.
I know Jen [sigh]
Brick walls, GracesGran.
Posts are just opinions.
Jalima I don't actually care if we have an edit button or not. I was showing you what some are saying, i.e., I don't want it so you can't have it. The people who don't want it wouldn't need to use it but want to prevent those who do want it from having it. (like the cheese thing)
I think it might be nice to try it if GN could do it. If it doesn't work out they could switch it off. If things became more peaceful I bet a) some people would still not actually join in the politics threads - a debate/discussion isn't really what they want. Some people would and generally I think the more the better.
I was explaining it to Norah in fact, and you could have ignored my post of Tue 01-Aug-17 16:45:54 Gracesgran.
No-one seems to be being dictatorial.
I said if we had a 5 minutes chance to edit our posts and it was just a remark because I made a mistake.
I should have previewed or checked first but I am not being dictatorial about it.
I can take it or leave it
I can take it or leave it regarding an 'ignore' button, but on reflection, it may not be a bad idea.
It would be used to make some very uncomfortable, not nice , in fact most rude and ill mannered in my opinion
Now - if we had a 5 minute chance to edit our posts I could have corrected my mistake where I changed it and didn't read through before posting!
I don't want an edit button so I don't think those who want one should have one.
Equally I don't like cheese so I think it should be cleared from the shelves and no one allowed to have it. After all I shall never want it.
I do wonder just how dictatorial you can get over this. No one who didn't want to use a 'hide' button would be affected by it. It would be a nine day wonder used occasionally to make peoples lives a little more comfortable.
If I am busy for a couple of days I can already loose the thread - how many people do you think are on here constantly? There are a couple of people I rarely respond to; I just glance over their posts and generally don't bother to read them. Why do you want control of what I see? I don't want control of what you see. You cannot force me to read them currently or take them into account as part of the discussion. An available 'hide' button - I don't believe they are used that often - could make for a generally less contentious time - or is it the contentiousness that you actually want?
Jalima1108 I understood, and I think the point to hiding won't work because the very people who hide others then lose the conversation. I tried and failed to say why to me it is not a good idea. But to each their own opinion.
At some time on another post I was pilloried because I do not tell my DDs what to do regarding their husbands and mils. I thought the very notion I was in charge of my sils was stupid, but that happens in posts. Again, all posts are just opinions.
I haven't been on this thread for a while and reading it, is a case of "Oh, my, what happened?!"

If I was HQ I'd delete "archive" this thread and act arbitrarily.
Now - if we had a 5 minute chance to edit our posts I could have corrected my mistake where I changed it and didn't read through before posting!
Oh dear, I don't think that Norah said anything in her posts to deserve that shouty tirade!
Norah, if you had an ignore button you could ignore posters who did and any other posts they make that but others could still see the posts.
If GN deletes a post because it is against guidelines then no-one can see it.
If you have an ignore button and ignore all posts from a poster you could lose track of what is going on in a thread.
If you could stop the verbals for a moment and think - the people who did NOT see the deleted post in question don't know what it demonstrated - answer is, it demonstrated that when you don't know what the post said, you miss a step in the conversation and have to ask "Well done for saying what?"
Of course,if you DID see it, it is still possible to have to ask that too . . .
You would still have people who had chosen to ignore all posts by a certain person then seeing a reply, possibly well separated from the one invisible to them, and causing their own mayhem asking for an explanation, or even responding to the reply without knowing what the original post said and confusing everyone else.
Frankly, I don't know whether an ignore option would be good or bad.
if it existed you would not have
but if it existed you would not have to
But your opinions are based on false reasoning. You have said you think that everyone would have the persons post hidden if one person chose to use it but that is simply not how the system works.
You are trying to inflict YOUR opinion on other people. It is fine that you don't want and would never use a 'hide' or 'ignore' system; if it existed you would not have. Your posts would look the same as they always have. However, you are saying is that you should decide whether other people should be able to use one or not. If I want it to be available I am not inflicting my opinions on anyone. They may or may not use it as they choose. You do not even want them to be able to decide. Apparently you feel your opinion it of greater worth than anyone else's.
Oh my, not criticism, I do not think 'ignore' is a good idea, and I am not alone. I have opinions as do you.
Mohammed99 unintentionally showed what happens to hiding a post.
NO HE DIDN'T. If you had Mohammed's post on ignore you would not see it but everyone else would be able to. YOU ARE WRONG don't you read anything before you offer criticism?
Even if you did decide to hide one persons posts you might, in certain threads, wish to see it. A little message appears instead of the post. It says 'You are ignoring this user. Show me the post.' The 'Show me the post' is a link you can click on to see that particular post. All others will still come up as hidden FOR YOU but NOT for anyone else but you can always look at individual ones if you choose to do so.
Your choice to 'hide' does not affect anyone else, they do not know about it and no one else has anyway of knowing about it. Everyone else sees just what they have always seen.
All this has been explained many times now. Why are you continuing to misrepresent it?
Mohammed99 unintentionally showed what happens to hiding a post.
I think it is good to be challenged in our thinking - as long as it can be kept civilised. I have learned a lot by reading others' posts and sometimes changed my own opinions in the light of them. There must be many others who have done so too.
I think it is a strength of GN that so many people with an evident passion for many different aspects of life and a depth and variety of so many differing experiences post. It is sometimes uncomfortable when a handful of individuals make it personal, but overall those that have a good point to make usually make it with good sense and good grace.
Why 'well done mohamed99' Norah?
Does not only reading posts of like minded posters mean an unwillingness to get out of one's comfort zone ?
