Strange phone calls?

We get these too in spite of being signed up to the TPS. However I prefer these to the ones that ask you to do surveys and even though you refuse to co-operate, keep on calling you. Nowadays I find it easier to answer their stupid questions, say the first thing that comes into my head, true or not, never give details of my income and say no when they ask if I would like to be contacted about offers etc. Seems to work! I also have fun stringing along those callers that are obviously operating a scam. Funny, those callers never say goodbye when they realise they've been rumbled and hang up!

Phone numbers are sold to companies. If it is known that the number is "warm", which means in use, they can charge more for it.

I had one of those calls, then a short while later there was a scam call. I think the first one was to check if the phone number was viable.

Yes, same here, I've never had one which says 'goodbye' at the end!

Your callers are a lot more polite than mine. When we get those calls, they are entirely silent.

Ilovecheese is right. The automated systems phone faster than the human operators can deal with the calls so if no one is available the machine says goodbye and disconnects.

Ah, that explains it, thank you!

Yes, lots. I think it's something to do with automated phone calls to hundreds of numbers at a time, but don't know for sure.

I have had a few of these lately, when I answer I can just hear some faint crackling, then a womans recorded voice says "goodbye"

confused It's always a withheld number.

Has anyone else had them?
