Not far from us, oddbird. We spent many happy years cruising up and down the Ouse, Cam, Old West and the bottom end of the Lark at Brandon Creek.

I can't remember where you are with the fitting out stage but if money and space will allow look to having a holding tank for your ' night soil' ( that's the official term) for toilet waste.
With that you just have a hose that goes from your tank to the pump out station.

Auntieflo the engine is similar to a car engine...just needs a service and oil change every year same as a car. Oh the one thing I will have to get my head round is emptying the cassette. That is attached to the loo...will have to be done once a week...hahaha

I used to read lots of books about people last ving on barges when I was a kid! Fascinated me. And how you have to get through tunnels by lying on your back and "walking it through" maybe that's only when it as horse drawn though. And you can practice barge art to pretty it all up!

Another one green with envy here. Do you have to be a bit of an engineer for the working parts?

Factoring everything in including mooring costs and river licence it is still less than I pay for rent. I have enough left over for food and petrol as well. Also covering cost of blackening and servicing. It will allow me to retire next year.

Merlotgran I will be on the river Lark in Suffolk.

Cherrytree It isn't a particularly cheap option to live on a boat. You have to pay licence fees to the Canals & Rivers Trust & mooring fees to marinas too. I'm sure oddbird will have gone into all that.

There was a Sarah Beany(sp?) programme on just recently (living mortgage free).
A young woman sold her flat in London and bought a river boat to renovate and live on the water.
Apparently the number of people living on boats in the UK has gone up considerably due to housing costs.

Janeainsworth she is going to be renamed 'Circle of Peace' when she is out of water for blackening next Spring. Is unlucky to change name when in the water
